Nostrils inflating on inhale.
Nostrils inflating on inhale.
New user here, trying to get used to CPAP, using a nasal pillow mask (p30i).
When the pressure gets to about 7, my nostrils start inflating on inhale (especially at the end of inhale). I've read that subtle movements like this will eventually weaken the cartilage, leading to easily collapsible nostrils. My nasal passages are pretty narrow already and I'm worried that this can make breathing even harder over time.
Is there a way to prevent the inflating?

please stay in one thread and get your answers there. it's hard to keep track of what advice you've been given over multiple threads.Sylvanas wrote: ↑Fri Jul 03, 2020 4:05 pmNew user here, trying to get used to CPAP, using a nasal pillow mask (p30i).

Re: Nostrils inflating on inhale.
I don't think you have anything to worry about as far as weakening cartilage is concerned. I just did a Google search, and it says that nasal cartilage only stretches permanently if it's heated right up during plastic surgery. Here's the info.:-Sylvanas wrote: ↑Fri Jul 03, 2020 4:05 pmNew user here, trying to get used to CPAP, using a nasal pillow mask (p30i).

If it's also uncomfortable when your nostrils feel inflated and you can't get used to it, you could try a different type of mask. Mine is an N30i, which I like, and I THINK....could be wrong....that the mask frame you are using will also take N30i cushions...or whatever the part is called that sits directly under your nose. It might be worth a try, but maybe you would have the same feeling with anything blowing into your nose. If no nasal cushions work out for you, you might feel better with a full face mask. If I was buying a full-face mask myself, I'd try this one out first...the ResMed AirTouch F20 Full Face CPAP Mask. https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... -cpap-mask It looks good, and seems very popular....worth a try, anyway, if you end up settling on a full face mask.
Good luck, whatever ends up working for you.

Re: Nostrils inflating on inhale.
Sylvanas, one or two more thoughts. If the bottom part of your nose is uncomfortable, try loosening the headgear a tiny bit and see if that helps. Also, the wide part of the pillow is supposed to sit on the outside of your nares. If the wide part is working its way into your nares, try going up a size.

Nah man. I'll never forget the time my nostrils inflated. I woke up on the ceiling. Crazy stuff.palerider wrote: ↑Fri Jul 03, 2020 10:55 pmWhere does one read such claptrap?Sylvanas wrote: ↑Fri Jul 03, 2020 4:05 pmNew user here, trying to get used to CPAP, using a nasal pillow mask (p30i).

Re: Nostrils inflating on inhale.
It was in a book by an ENT, specialist in SDB. It wasn't in a context of CPAP though. He mentioned that when someone's nose is half blocked for w/e reason (allergy or enlarged turbinates), a person needs to breath in harder, which pulls the nostrils slightly inside. The movement is negligible at first, but over the years it weakens the cartilage, making the nostrils collapse more and more. I have this problem myself, to some degree. I could find the exact explanation from the book.chunkyfrog wrote: ↑Fri Jul 03, 2020 11:35 pmTrolls make it up on the internet.

I think the same mechanics would apply to CPAP inflating the nostrils on each breath. Even if it moves the nostrils in a different direction, it could slowly damage the cartilage. If you think this isn't correct, please explain why.
Re: Nostrils inflating on inhale.
It doesn't matter - stop looking at 'out there' info to add to your anxiety. There is a lot of c..p if you want to find it, but it won't help you and will only drive you nuts. Your nose will be fine. Everything will be fine. Just breathe. Relax. Nite nite.

They have been for me.ChicagoGranny wrote: ↑Sat Jul 04, 2020 1:10 pmWell, lawdy, I always thought inflated nostrils were a benefit of nasal pillows. Prove me wrong.
I had a Septoplasty and T. Reduction almost two years ago with limited success. On a good day breathing through my nose is uncomfortable, on many days it's tedious. I end most of my days watching TV with my spare machine, and breathing comfortably because my P10s are gently inflating my nostrils and passages.
I just don't get the same benefit from any other type of mask.
The OP claims narrow passages. From experience, there is nothing better for narrow passages than a little air pressure . And the part about deforming the cartilage, hogwash.
