Re: OT: Quarantine supplies
We managed to get a large package of toilet tissue just before our local Sam's ran out. It wasn't the brand we normally use, but I was glad to find it. I also managed to get a large package of paper towels and some facial tissue from Sam's Club on line. I will hit Walmart early tomorrow morning to see if I can get a loaf of bread, and a few fresh vegetables. I want to make a pot of stew. I have stew beef in my freezer.

When we lived in KC stores would run out of distilled water so we invested in water distiller. Bought it off amazon for 75 dollars.
Now that we live in NE Ark we have power outages o invested some tax return money in a Goal Zero 1000 watt power station and dc power supply for the cpap.

For anyone thinking about this, lead acid mobility scooter batteries offer more runtime for a fraction of the cost.

Hubby is an OTR truck driver and he says the traffic has reduced considerably. People are still out and about but not nearly like they were. I have noticed it as well when I go into town...and it really dries up a lot earlier when it does dry up. Late afternoon and evening much less traffic than in the mornings now.
Virginia is now supposed to self quarantine until June 10. supposedly it is a Class 1 misdemeanor to be out & about in violation but they have not (yet?) committed to enforcing the ruling. Like all things, time will tell. We see photos of New Yorkers crowding in subways and to watch the hospital ship dock. I fear it will take police enforcement in some areas to conquer this invasion.

Re: OT: Quarantine supplies
Most people don't give this any more thought than is required. Here in the US, we have never come across something like this before. Think about it, where is the line drawn between personal Rights, which we take very seriously, and the power of government to be able to limit those Rights? Is government, even under the auspices of public safety, able to pass the relatively high Constitutional barrier to forcibly limit a person's Rights without due process? It's a question that we may not know the answer to until this is over. Again, we haven't come across this particular set of problems regarding a pandemic before, at least not in the modern age.prodigyplace wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2020 3:52 amI really wish you were right Those who ignore the government are putting the rest of us at risk. It's a given that people in the United States are generally more rebellious, that's in our nature, and I love that. We have an innate and natural distrust of government, afterall, it's in our roots as free people and I don't see that diminishing anytime soon. Much of this is a matter of personal responsibility. The more responsible people are doing what is required in order to slow this down, while the less responsible ones are...doing whatever they want to do.
Here where I live, people are generally taking it upon themselves to do the right thing, and I am encouraged by that. As a member of government, I do not want to be put in a position in which I have to make the decision to either forcibly restrict someone's freedom, or not. It's a question of just how far "emergency powers" go. I will say that most people are willing to curb their behavior after simply being asked to. Most people can be reasoned with in the current state of affairs, but there are always those that can't be. With that said, the latter of those are usually engaged in some other "activity" that makes the decision fairly easy to make, given that probable cause is likely met.

Re: OT: Quarantine supplies
Went to Sam's Club early this morning and it looks like things are starting to get back on the shelves. They had plenty of toilet paper, paper towels, facial tissues, at least until the hoarders show up again. They had a few sanitary wipes and were limiting people to one package each. Other things such as frozen fish, vegetables, etc. were mostly in stock and limited to one of each item. We have enough meat and veggies to last us around two months, so we are pretty well set except for possibly milk and bread. We can always go back to drinking our coffer black.

Part of your problem is that you have no self awareness of what you're saying. You look at some news report(s), which are almost always sensationalized, and the jump to conclusions about the whole country.prodigyplace wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2020 3:52 amI really wish you were right Those who ignore the government are putting the rest of us at risk. If you wanted to see what's really happening, get on Google maps, and click on "traffic", look at areas that are normally busy, see how they aren't.
Look at the drone video of San Francisco that looks positively post apocalyptic, only a few people wandering around, or the one from NYC yesterday that showed nearly empty streets, shuttered shops, empty subway platforms.
Of course, none of that addresses your assertion that rural areas are ignoring the social distancing. Your "defense" is "photos" of *NEW YORKERS* "crowding".
You repeatedly comment on things you have no knowledge of.
In support of Pugsy's refutation of your comment that was nothing but noise, here's a snippet of real information from the American Transportation Research Institute:
Now, if you'd said "where I am, bla bla bla", you would perhaps not been so full of it. But you have no idea what is actually happening in the "rest of the country. Now, would you kindly quit wasting other people's time?ATRI’s real-time GPS data comes from more than a million trucks, allowing us to analyze freight flows, and so far in March, what we are seeing is an unprecedented level of truck movement,” said ATRI President and COO Rebecca Brewster. “Not only are trucks continuing to move, but they are doing so at speeds well in excess of normal traffic patterns.

Rural Oklahoma.
Traffic has lightened up considerably.
Mostly oilfield. (The oil patch must power through, regardless)

Re: OT: Quarantine supplies
Every area is different. We are under some weird Arizona kind of "stay at home" order. Stay at home but go out and bike, hike, exercise, support local business like hair salons and nail places and take out. I guess we are still banking on heat kills it.
We've had 20 deaths but they are mostly from Northern Az on the indian res. One guy that died was in hospice already for something else. We have not had the shortages of goods you all have. Our stores have remained mostly stocked except for hand sanitizer and toilet paper and I just saw a pic from Costco the other day with palettes of toilet paper back in stock. Many places are hiring. Honeywell is adding 500 jobs and will be pumping out 3 million masks a day. My entire family are all considered essential and go to work every day. I see the pics of the bodies piling up in NY and my heart hurts for you. I drove out to no contact drop off some disinfecting wipes for a friend and saw full golf courses, and plenty of people with their atv's screwing off out in the desert. I wonder if we will be like NY in a few weeks of if our already up into the 80's and 90's weather is keeping it at bay. My emotions slide back and forth between OMG we are all going to die to the opposite that this is no big deal here. The hardest part for me is staying home while my family is working. I want to be helping too. My daughter threatened to bring me home a puppy to keep me busy. Haha she knows me well. As if my 3 dogs and her 4 cats aren't enough animals.

Our "stay at home has actually closed hair salons, etc. where social distancing is not possible. Indoor recreation is closed. Fishing & golf are OK but clubhouse is closed.babydinosnoreless wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2020 11:21 amEvery area is different. We are under some weird Arizona kind of "stay at home" order. My son & I are fortunate to be able to work from home and we have a garden which should help with food in a few months.

Yeah my other daughter is in Vegas where almost everything is closed. The only places closed here are the big box stores like best buy, that closed nationwide. All the local businesses are still open except for gyms and bars but bars can still do take out or delivery. My husband wants to go thru one of their drive ups just so he can say he got a drive thru beer.prodigyplace wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2020 11:27 amOur "stay at home has actually closed hair salons, etc. where social distancing is not possible. Nor is most of it like your "family's local first hand experience", I'm "out" right now due to the medical necessity I have. Traffic this .morning was lighter than typical on national holidays. I was in the store last Thursday, there was a line of spaced out shoppers waiting to get in when they opened, and no line when I left. Perhaps *you* should get out more.prodigyplace wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2020 11:01 amif YOU want to know what is happening go outside!
