I also have a cleaning machine that I put the mask & tube in each day.
Uh-oh
There is no such thing as a "cleaning machine"--unless it is your wallet that needs cleaning.

I have seen a grossly overpriced ultrasonic cleaner marketed for cpap.. looks like what you could get for 1/4th the price at Harbor Freight...

That would actually clean things, assuming you could get the tube filled up with water and not have any bubbles.

Ultrasonic cleaners work best on hard materials, like metal parts or jewelry,
or porous materials, like cloth, as nothing impedes soundwaves traveling on and through the part.
My thought is a soft, nonporous material might need to have the ultrasonic emitter
welded to a rod run down the center of a hose. Otherwise, little cleaning would happen.

But that is just me.

Could the aforementioned "cleaning machine" be a UV sterilizer? Just curious.

I consider myself a newbie so I just went along with the wisdom of the crowd and bought a bottle of Dawn---- until one day, being lazy, I tried another dishwasher liquid detergent (Joy). It had a different feel to it; it seemed more slippery. It had a different smell too when I first took a few breaths through the mask at night---- but the new smell soon went away. As a result of the comments, I checked and found that I bought Dawn liquid hand soap not detergent! I know that almost anything will clean the mask (of the oils and the guck) either liquid soap or detergent) but I thought detergent was better. Salt water boaters swear by the stuff or used to and of course they use on the ducks. I am on the look-out for un-scented dawn detergent; that's a good idea, but it doesn't seem common. Have they stopped producing it?

I just fill my sink with very hot water and submerge hose and mask. I've used dishsoap before but I am so sensitive to cleaning products and there smells I cant stand the mask after. Hopefully my method is good enough.

There is really no reason to clean the hose. I doubt if soaking the mask in hot water will remove the facial oils from the mask. I use Ivory liquid on ours. I used to use generic baby shampoo from Walmart which also works, but not as well as dish soap. My skin tends to be rather oily and it really shows on my mask cushion.

No, hot water without surfactant won't remove oils, just putting the mask and hose in hot water is a waste of time.
