Central apnea on my back , questions

Post by Bigtoddhere » Mon Dec 16, 2019 9:17 pm

Hello my sleep study showed I have a form of central apnea on my back. My APAP machine with Oscar states that it's Cheyne–Stokes respiration while my sleep doctor said during the sleep study it wasn't.. just central.. does this look like Cheyne–Stokes respiration?

I've never been able to sleep on my back my entire life.. when I would I would always awaken gasping for air or dizzy or both..

My second question is if this is just a plain case of central apnea without any other issues is getting a ASV machine even worth it just to say I can sleep on my back. With apap I can get a 0 ahi 3 to 4 nights a week ..never more that 2.. only side sleeping..

This screenshot was when I intentionally slept on my back for my doctor.. this lasted about a half hour.. lmk what you think .. especially if a asv is worth my efforts.. I sleep fine in a auto mode apap atm..

FAR too little info to do more than just make wild guesses.

don't post pictures, post screenshots.

That's too zoomed in.

Read the 'READ THIS BEFORE POSTING' post.

Hello my sleep study showed I have a form of central apnea on my back.
welcome to the zoo! as palerider points out, see the newbie thread. it's in my sig below.

the experts here (i ain't one!) will need to see your charts arranged in a particular order. the newbie thread will speak to this. while it's written to reflect sleepyhead, oscar works well there too.

i'm guessing, and i really mean GUESSING, that you don't have any cheyne stokes breathing. but make sure you get the charts attached here for the real smart people to look at!

good luck.
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

It would be very helpful to see screenshots, as palerider says. But I'm curious: do you find it hard or easy to sleep on your side? If it's easy, and that's where you are when you sleep, is there any particular reason you care what happens if you're sleeping on your back? If it's hard, is is something you'd like to work on? That's a habit people can sometimes change.

My bad .. I've read the how to .. and it's not very clear how much time is wanted to see In a flow.. I can't take a screenshot with my PC at the moment.. it's not on a WiFi ..

Im sorry for the resolution.. is this ok ..? The breathing pattern looks like this continually..

I appreciate your time and help.

I can sleep great on my side but a few problems.. I am built like a lineman .. my shoulders and hips ruin most mattresses in about a year.. at 280lbs.. not very fat.. like some abs in the morning.

I see your point though and that's the reason why I'm asking. My wife and I currently sleeping on twin XL adjustable beds because I would ruin a king size mattress and I was tired of paying four to $5,000 a pop. Now it's only a grand for my side.

While I was having my sleep study the technician came in before putting on the CPAP and told me that I was having some form of a breathing problem that looked like Cheyne–Stokes respiration.. they put me on the straight 12 prescription wise and I don't even think the sleep doctor even looked at my flow rate. When I called back and asked they said it didn't look like csr ...

That's why I love my waterbed... it offers just as much support as it did 40 years ago when I got it :)

That's CSR. obligatory "have you had your heart checked out lately?" question.

Yes , I am having my heart checked out.

So far I've gotten an echocardiogram that showed my arotic regurgitation is moderate with a 55% injection rate with normal left ventricle size and shape and mild turbosity of the aortic root. After my echocardiogram my doctor told me to come back in a year to get another one. That was my cardiologist but my PCP just had me ordered a CT scan with contrast that was today.

when I was a child I remember always having to go to the doctor and having them listen to my chest for a heart murmur with a stethoscope .. after about 10 years old I stopped going because the doctor said he couldn't hear it anymore. I also couldn't sleep on my back back then. I do not have any CSR related issues while I'm awake or while I'm on my back while I'm awake. But if I fall asleep on my back I will have this every time I do regardless of what stage of my sleep I am in. I next have an appointment with a pulmonologist. I'm trying to get the flow limitations from my sleep study so that doctor can see them next. The bar was set so low at my sleep study and I'm really trying to do what I can to make sure that my health remains as best as possible.

Is it possible to have CSR and not be dying soon ? And or major heart issues.. ? Or is aortic regurgitation enough of heart failure to cause the issues? Given that this isn't happening when I sleep on my side I take it that my heart is in a happier place without the pressure or my brain is getting the signals that is needed easier to keep my O2 and CO2 at proper levels. My oxygen levels regularly run at 88% while at deep sleep even on apap.. with a 50bpm pulse..

It looks to me that my breathing cycle is right at 40 seconds to 43 seconds every time. Is there a specific name for csr without hf?

Ty so much .. this is scary shit

First thing I'd suggest doing is turning off, (or at least turning down) the EPR setting.
