Dry throat

Post by JennySawyer » Fri Aug 16, 2019 11:20 am

What can I do to combat the fact that my CPAP machine makes my throat very dry? I wake up feeling like I haven't drank anything for days. The humidity is up as high as it will go. Mind you last night was different in that water was squirting in to my eye - but usually it's a dry throat.

may i suggest xylimelts? they are a lozenge that sits between teeth and cheek with a slightly sticky side that keeps in firm to the tooth. it's a saliva producer that slowly melts over night and keeps thinks moist.

you can find it in the oral care section of drugstores or grocery stores.

but that's enough about them.

The high humidity setting may be contributing to your problem.......mouth breathing.
If the high humidity is causing nasal congestion, you're going to have to breathe through your mouth......resulting in "dry mouth".

Try experimenting with lower HH settings or even turning it off.......using cool, "passover" humidity.
Your other problem ("rainout") may also go away with lower HH settings.

I intend to reduce the humidity when the xylimelts arrive.

This was a huge problem for me. My list of things to try:
a) Being fairly well hydrated in general;
b) Mask fit (if full face) -- this was huge for me;
c) A few squirts of Biotene before bed;
d) A night guard (sounds strange but worked for me);
e) Lots of humidity. (For others, it is the opposite)
Machine: Aircurve 10 Vauto (Prior S9 VPAP)
Mask: Quattro Air FFM and AirTouch F20 FFM

But, the point is, you may not even need the Xylimelts if you turn down your HH settings.
Do you do nasal cleansing before bedtime? If not, you may want to try that.
Can you (normally) breathe through your nose? If not, you may want to try nasal cleansing before bedtime.
Do you or have you tried to train your tongue to stay to the roof of your mouth while you sleep? If not, that may help.

I suggest you are opening your mouth and the air is drying out your mouth. I don't think humidity, Biotene or lozenges will do any good. Try a good chinstrap. like Ruby Red.

My mouth is always open due to the shape of my jaw - which is apparently what causes my sleep apnea.

I don't know what that is, however I always thoroughly blow my nose before bedtime, in fact I blow my nose quite a lot as I hate having a runny nose.

I used the xylimelts last night for the first time, I reduced the CPAP machine's humidity level from 8 to 6, my throat was not dry so I'd say the xylimelts do work & of course that is good!
