Something I Hate

Post by i_am_jim » Mon Jun 10, 2019 3:00 pm

I admit I have little patience, but . . .

One of the things that simply infuriate me is when I explain a problem I am having with a device they made or sold me and they tell me it's not doing what I just explained it was doing. I use it -- they don't, "please don't tell me not to believe my eyes," or in this case what's happening around me.

I got a new CPAP machine (resmed airsense 10) about 3 weeks ago. Previously I had an Autoset S9 so I know how they should work and the S9 worked close to perfect in this regard. I use the automatic start and stop mode. Since I began using this one it has only started once by me sucking on it -- I have to press the start button and then suck on it for it to start. About 80% of the time it doesn't turn off when I take it off. I have to pull the hose out of the unit to make it stop. One day I forgot to do that and it blew all day. I only noticed it when I was about to put it back on. The S9 always started and almost always stopped properly.

My supplier says they looked at it on the cellular network and it's working perfectly.

NO! It's not.

I have found that I need to exhale strongly to get the SmartStart to work. The stop feature did not seem to be working for me, but I have never waited more than a second or two before hitting the off button.

To your main point though, I agree completely. Is your DME close enough that it would be easy to go to their office and demo the problem?

I have a similar machine.
I use the smart start to turn it on, but choose to shut it off manually,
rather than wait however long it finally takes to shut off. (Not patient, I am.)
No biggie; but if I had a disability, this would be a huge issue.
Resmed has been told--but maybe they cannot hear . . .
This problem is quite common.---maybe on the next model?

I to the same thing, turn it on with a couple strong exhales, but always turn it off via the off button.

My trick to trigger smart start is to cover the vent with my finger--then it starts right up regardless of the type of mask I'm using.

Automatic stop never seems to work. I do it manually. I do find that annoying because for some reason I always wake up on the very edge of our king-sized bed and rolling over or reaching for that damned button can land me on the floor if I'm not careful, but I hate the rushing air when I take off the mask while still running.

I suspect the auto-off has been programmed to NOT be triggered by an apnea.
A fail-safe as it were.
If it is hazardous to reach over and shut it off---let it run.
With the mask off, it WILL stop eventually.
Alternatively, one could stuff the mask under a pillow.

If I simply disconnect the elbow from the front of my mast, the auto off works fine. With nasal pillows, the amount of air flow may not be enough to trigger the auto off function.

One morning I forgot to turn it off and it ran until I was ready to use it that night. In a way that made it convenient since the start doesn't work. Actually I became aware it was still running when I removed the humidity chamber to add water. Even with that large blast of air, it didn't turn itself off, I had to turn it off manually.

It's programmed to do an auto-off when the pressure drops far enough that the only reason can be that the mask has been taken off.

When I first started using the P10, I forgot to change the mask type from 'full face', and my machine wouldn't turn off, because the p10 created enough back pressure that the machine thought it was just a really huge leak.

As soon as I set the mask type to 'pillows', auto-off started working every time.

Having low pressure makes it iffy, though, because the pressure drop isn't as dramatic.

When I first got my Airsense 10 I had a nasal mask and it shut off automatically within a few seconds of removing my mask. But once I started using the pillows it no longer shut off, so I just do it manually now. I consider the reaching over and stretching my arm to turn off the machine just part of my morning aerobics......

What pressure are you using?

This is in the troubleshooting section.

Mine is set for 9.2-13, and it turns on, but not off.
My P10 pillows are size small. Pillow size might be relevant.

I think it is a combination of pillow size and pressure and the type of pillow maybe (like FX vs P10).
And 7 cm is NOT necessarily the cut off either. I know I tried 10 cm on my P10 and Auto Off still wouldn't work. I used the Small size pillow...I never did think to maybe try a larger pillow though.

What people can do to see if it is just the pillow resistance not allowing for the machine to sense if the human is still using it or bad sensors....just take the mask off of the long hose and see if the machine will then turn off like it should.
If it doesn't then there is a problem with the sensors..
If it does turn off then it's the mask that is being used that seems to be the culprit...and we just have to manually push the button to turn it off.

Taking the mask off has no effect.
Unplugging the mask from the hose works IMMEDIATELY.
Go figure.

Could be... I use the large pillows, so bigger holes, less back pressure.
