Do you have a backup XPAP machine and have you ever had to use it?

I have three machines and my main use is the S9 Bilevel VPAP Auto. I bought this to replace my PRS1 760 BiPAP Auto which is now going to be my travel machine. I still have my original machine, the PRS1 560 Auto. The two Respironics share a humidifier.

I'm off to Perth on Friday for two weeks and will take the 760 with me. It's all set up to just pick up and just go, including electrical connections, mask, hose, etc.

I'll put the machine in my carry on bag and the humidifier in my checked luggage.

Forgot my machine at my sister's house once (100 miles away). Fortunately, I had my backup at home. I normally only use my backup a couple nights every other month, but that's an interesting alternative idea - to use it longer over a couple of months. Wouldn't want to find out that the backup machine broke down when the main one does.

FWIW, I take my primary Medicare-paid-for-machine with me away from home because Medicare will fix or replace it if it gets damaged, lost or stolen, even while traveling. If it were my backup, that's my dime entirely.

What is your go to site to look for and buy a back up unit?

I have no firsthand experience dealing with Second Wind (hehe) but I've heard nothing but good things about the machines they sell.

Craigslist and OfferUp. Also, there are some good folks offering used machines here as well. If you buy from someone not local, use Paypal. They provide some protection if the machine turns out to be other than advertised. My never-even-taken-out-of-the-plastic-zero-hour Airsense for Her came from Offerup.com in another state and the seller was happy to ship (about $20-$25). Got it for $150 plus shipping. Works like a charm.

The biggest problem I've had with Offerup is that folks don't set their accounts to be notified by email that there has been an enquiry. So if you don't hear from them when you ask about availability, you probably never will. Move on to the next.

Also, if you just don't want to put out much money, don't be afraid to get a straight pressure cpap if you are only using it for backup in case your machine fails (vs. traveling with it). Some of these older machines sell for under $100 complete with extra supplies. Lots of people on here upgraded and still use those old straight pressure machines for backup or at the cabin.

Talking about the capabilities of the machine. Straight pressure or fixed pressure capability only vs the ability to use a mode that will let the pressure auto adjust as needed.
Machines that are capable of auto adjusting mode are commonly called apaps...
Machines that can only do a fixed/straight pressure are called cpaps...

APAP machines have cpap mode available so 2 machines in 1.
CPAP machines will only have the 1 mode available except in some models they might have a limited time function for apap mode.

Your PR System One 60 Series Pro that you show in your profile is a fixed pressure machine....but it does have a very limited short time trial available in auto mode...but it's not a forever auto mode like apap machines are.

Once I decided on which model backup I wanted, I checked Secondwindcpap.com,
but ended up buying from cpap.com, as I wanted to use my flex debit card.

I say keep the old one as your backup if it's still in working order. Use it (or at least run it for several hours), twice per month. Also, if your prescription changes, make sure all your CPAP machines are set to your new prescription.

Okay. The used one that I just bought is about 9 months newer than the one I"m using now, and has much less hours on it which i why I was planning to keep it as the backup one and keep using the one I am using.
