Due for a new machine what's improved in 5 yrs

Post by birdygirl38 » Tue Oct 24, 2017 8:51 pm

Hello
My Pulmonologist is calling n a prescription to my DME for an APAP. My current machine is not an apap. 5 yrs old so old phillpps Respironics CPAP. I've been feeling like before I ever got the machine. Wearing it maybe all but one day a month. I currently fight getting to sleep with the CPAP as I am feeling more and more claustrophoic while wearing it Once I get to sleep usually ok. I seem to like to breathe really deeply to relax and fall asleep and my current machine tries to shorten my inhale and exhale. Hopefully an APAP is smarter than that.
What APAP machine would you recommend.
My computer with sleepyhead loaded is not functional so can't check my stats. I hear the new machines send data directly to the dr can I also send it to sleepyhead?
Thanks

The only way you can send the data to sleepyhead is to either move your SD card to the computer or install a Flash Air card in the machine. I use Flash Air cards in both of our machines and transfer data from the machines to the computer using my in home router. I set up two folders for the data (one for my wife and one for me). After transferring data to my computer, I have sleepyhead read the data from the files.

You might consider the machine I use. Click the link below. This one is considered state of the art. It does cpap, apap, and apap "for her."

If your min. pressure setting is too low you won't be able to inhale properly... what is it at now? And you can use a feature on the new machine (most have it) to help you exhale more easily too.

Turn off flex.

3. DreamStation Auto CPAP Machine (add humidifier if desired) https://www.cpap.com/productpage/pr-dre ... chine.html

Either of these machines should serve you well assuming you have obstructive sleep apnea and your pressure requirement is not 14 or above.

We can help you with the data and getting Sleepyhead to work properly after you have your machine.

My min pressure is 4 and max 11. I ramp over 45 minutes. Not sure how to turn off flex. Will look into that tonight when I go up to sleep.

Your min. pressure is the machine's default low and way too difficult for people to inhale properly... bump it to at least 6 or 7 for now and get rid of the ramp - you don't need it for those very low numbers and you're not being fully treated for 45 mins (while it's climbing 'allll' the way up from... 4 to...4!

Actually with Respironics machines in auto adjusting mode and using ramp the machine will suspend ramp if something should happen and the airway closes and then once that has passed will resume ramp if any time is left on the ramp period.
So saying that a person isn't treated when in ramp isn't true with Respironics machines in apap mode...all past Respironics apap models included.

And now with the new Smart Ramp or Auto Ramp of the Respironics machines it's even available when not in apap mode if they choose the new ramp option.

So how is it not full treated if the machine suspends ramp and goes right to work?

I have a 3 year old System One. The motor is humming and HME sent me home and told me to remove the white filter. If it doesn't fix it bring it back today and they will give me a loaner while "fixing" it. They also said being it is 3 years old my insurance will replace the machine. What is currently the best technology these days? Previously S9 was my first choice. The autosense 10 was new and most were saying to get the S9. What is the feeling these days? Thanks

If you are getting it from a local DME covered by your insurance, it's going to be the ResMed AirSense™ 10 AutoSet™ CPAP Machine with HumidAir™ Heated Humidifier - https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... idair.html .

Local DMEs are unlikely to have any stock of S9 left. The 10 is very good.

If you prefer a Respironics machine - https://www.cpap.com/productpage/pr-dre ... chine.html

4 to...4 is no ramp at 'allll'

1. Not all machines work that way.

2. If you have a APAP, and the pressure is set wide treatment won't take effect fast enough to give full treatment. Jim
