Is the relationship between weight loss or gain and pressure of interest to you?

Tracking OUR weight/pressure relationship

Post by kteague » Sat Sep 30, 2006 6:50 am

From time to time there are posts about someone losing weight and needing less pressure or possibly needing more because they've gained. I would find it interesting to see data from the members of this forum for a few months for a fuller picture of that relationship. Those with autopaps could report regularly (weekly, monthly, every 10 lbs?). Others could report if they've had followup sleep studies. I'm not so interested in actual weight of individuals. but rather, just reporting pounds lost or gained and pressure, although it would be interesting to see if the effect is greater at either end of the spectrum. Some may already have that info to submit to begin the project. But one big problem - a lot of random info would be just that without a statistics person to compile it in a useful format. Anyone interested in taking that on? There would still be some details to work out, but I'm attaching a 2-week poll to see if there's enough people interested to make the project worthwhile.

Gee, Snoredog, you mean I've had it backwards all this time? Develop that theory - somebody will buy the book! =)

Kathy,

I'm trying to drop 20 pounds I would be glad to let you know if my pressure needs change.

Guess I'll have to quit eating all those Twinkies and lay off the meatloaf

Weight/pressure

Post by GoofyUT » Sun Oct 01, 2006 10:03 pm

Kath-

As of this morning, I've lost just over forty pounds since I started xPAP therapy 6 months ago (to the day!) I ran my data in EncorePro/MyEncore on Thursday, and with nearly two months of data, using Derek's AHI -v- Pressure chart, it turns out that my ideal pressure is 9.5 cm. I adjusted my REMstar Auto minimum up from 9.0 to 9.5 and since, I've joined the ZERO club (AHI=O, HI=0 and and AI=0). I was TITRTATED at 10.0cm in my PSG six months ago. Go figure.

Weight and Pressure

Tooly - Giving up Twinkies would be bearable. My meatloaf (or your recipe) -don't think so! 'Nuff said - or someone may tell us to go to a Cooking chatroom for this conversation.

Chuck - Go figure! (pun intended) What would your numbers do to an analysis? Can't accuse you of being cookie-cutter. Is that why some might say you're an exceptional kind of guy?

I have lost just over ten pounds since going on the hose. Actually, I did not have any weight loss the first month and only in the last month have I noticed the weight loss.

Furthermore, I have not yet implemented an exercise program into my weekly schedule ... which I do intend to begin quite soon (weather is starting to cool very nicely). I can provide monthly data to the project but it may be biased by the exercise.

Pressure Decrease

Post by jnickellrental » Mon Oct 02, 2006 6:27 pm

Since my titration I have lost about 7% of my body weight training for a late season triathlon and having recently recieved a APAP to replace my CPAP found my average pressure is 10.3, but I was titrated at 11. Though this could just be my doctor erroring on the high side. I would be interested in the findings by the time next summer rolls around I should be at about 20% weight loss with most attributable to fat loss without muscle loss.

Exercise & weight & pressure

Post by kteague » Tue Oct 03, 2006 11:36 pm

Roberto- Just curious, were you trying to lose weight when you dropped those pounds or did it "just happen" as a result of feeling better on cpap therapy? I'm thinking our weight/pressure relationship will prove to be as varied as our mask preferences.

Josh - Triathalon?!! Your xpap treatment must be therapeutic if you are feeling up to training for that. It's encouraging to hear the stories of those who have the energy to pursue an active life (and the finish line). My speed would be a Tryathalon - Try to stay awake to watch the race!

I was not yet trying to lose weight. My sleep doc had said that some people lose weight without changing anything else in their lifestyle other than using the PAP treatment. So I wanted to see if that was true for me before trying to start an exercise program. There was no change during the first month and was procrastinating the exe4rcise during the second month until I noticed that I had lost 10 lbs. ... now I'm all psyched on starting the exercise program due to my new found energy and the encouragement of losing the first 10 pounds. In fact, yesterday I noticed Ihad lost 2 more.

I don't know if it is just a coincidence ... but the weight started coming off on its own when I started using the Breeze which may have improved my treatment or it may just be coincidental with a delayed in the weight loss response to overall PAP treatment. Anyway, I started walking this week and plan to build up to some resistance training with weights in a couple of weeks.

I found Roberto's 10 lbs and someone else's 7. I certainly don't need them so let me know where to send them back... I'll pay for the shipping.

I lost weight after the diagnosis, hoping that weight loss and sleeping earlier would help... don't know if it did, but I was abou 12 lb. less at titration than at original sleep study. I hope to lose another 40 or a bit more to get out of the "overweight" category completely. My titrated pressure is now 7 cm. but haven't yet acquired the card reader and software to see what my autoPAP does each night. My doctor says my worrying about all the details is worse than my apnea, and he told me not to think about it so much. So, today, for the first time since this whole nightmare started I didn't right anything in a sleep diary. But I want to know what the pressure really is, and about leaks and so forth......
