Don't overlook the little things. Use mustard instead of Mayo. It will save about 100 calories.

Have a slice of meat roled up in a slice of cheese. Save 160 calories of bread.

Sweet potato or yam instaed of regular potato. Your blood sugar will rise much slower.

Look up the glycemic index of foods. The higher the index the faster your body converts it to glucose. Excess glucose is stored as FAT.

Glycemic index http://www.diabetes.ca/Section_About/glycemic.asp

If you're a diabetic you already know about this.

if you're not a diabetic and want to be , Ignore this.

Try to reduce your carbohydrate intake . You willl have more energy and feel much better.

Remember to stay out of the center isles of the grocery store. Thats deadly to us dieters.
Everything you need is around the outside.

Cheers,

Chris

Heidi,

Likewise, don't be discouraged by response. You might notice that there have been a large number of "views" (over 400) by people who are obviously curious about the topic. So even if you don't have lots of participants right away, you might gain more after the topic is started up. You never know. Certainly worth doing.

I've tried to stay away from some carbs. Have stayed clear of most pasta (some rare exceptions, like some pasta salad or pasta in a soup), pizza, and cut back substantially on fast food places. I sometimes cheat and have some dinner rolls, mostly as a snack. But my biggest sin has been a recent one. I've become addicted to the new Peanut Butter M&Ms (not the peanut kind, a newer peanut butter kind). Addicted big time. Weird recent sin. Any twelve-step programs for this?? I hope confessing it will make me not go down that aisle in the grocery store. Thanks for the advice!!!

My wife is doing the points thing. I'm doing the core plan.

Please post your one week loss next week.

Heidi

That's a great start

Don't think of this as a huge challenge, I think that makes it feels more daunting. It's a series of very small and insignificant decisions. Every time you are going to eat anything, whether snack or meal, make a decision to have a little less, or something different, or even nothing at all that time. I find those little decisions easier to make than thinking about the long term goal.

I'm sure you alredy have a hectic life, chasing around after hubby and 3 youngsters, but try to introduce a little more exercise into your daily routine as well. Start small and work up. Next time you go up stairs, try to do it a little quicker , or 2 steps at a time. Next time you go the shops, park further away from the entrance so you have to walk a bit further. If you're going to use a lift, walk instead, or if you're going up several floors, walk the first one then get the lift. Again, it's a series of small decisions which over time will become good habits.

Keep at it

I need to lose 80 pounds and I started the "Seattle Sutton" diet. You can choose from 1200 or 2000 calories a day. I wanted to try it (as I am getting double knee replacement on April 11th and getting new "baby knees") but its expensive and I will not be able to continue for a long time. You pick up fresh (not frozen) food on Mondays and Thursdays. The menus are good and most of the food I liked...some I did not....and then I would substitute it with a lean cuisine. I have been to WW many times but always seem to go full speed ahead and then quit. Its so hard for me because I cannot walk very well....bone on bone and so just cutting my food intake and not exercising is not good for losing weight.

I am trying though and need to for my knees, high BP, etc. I think having the SA support group is a wonderful idea. I have only lost 5# so far but will weigh in on Monday at the SS place where I pick up my food.

Losing weight is the hardest thing to do. I quit smoking 30 years ago and it was easier than losing weight. Even 6 weeks to get used to the SA equipment was easier in the long run than dieting or should I say changing my bad habits of eating. I love it all.....sweets, carbs, butter, fats. Oh why does food taste so good when "fat" is involved.

I think if we all stick together we can lose some of this fat. Thanks for starting the thread Heidi.

Wow Bozman that is great 10 lbs! I am trying the core plan also.

So we will see what happens. I had very good luck with WW last time I did it, I lost 14 lbs in 6 weeks.

Everybody lets just keep encouraging each other. I do think limiting some of the carbs is good. I was a huge carb addict!!!

So what I am doing now is better than what I was doing, there is no way I couldn't lose at least some weight.
