Tear in My mask Cushion

Post by NKYNewbie » Tue May 31, 2016 10:02 am

Hey guys
There is a tear in my mask cushion, That has caused a leak I'm my mask. I have two questions about this Fist is this something that can be fixed with duct tape? and how much would this affect my therapy? A little info I have a full face mask and the tear is at the bottom I have also ordered a new cushion. I would like to see if I can fix the seal now as it may take a week or two to receive the new mask and I don't want to loose a week of productivity at work.

Try the duct tape. How did it happen?

I was washing it too hard. It started out as a little tear and then slowly became bigger.

This is why it is a good idea to keep a spare of everything. I keep a spare mask, hose, filters, machine, etc. It seems thing like this always happen on weekends when the DME is closed.

I have also noticed that I feel like I did before I had CPAP. I am having trouble concentrating at work and am making all kinds of grammatical mistakes.

I don't think duct tape will work (tried it long ago) and may even worsen the tear. Pick up some 3M micropore tape on your way home from a drugstore and tape your lips overnight til you get a new cushion.

That is what I am afraid of. Question why would I want to tape my lips?

There are much faster ways to get what you need, cpap.com can beat that by a mile. Also you failed to state what your equiptment is, that will limit any help you can get. Jim

You have a FF mask for a reason, presumably mouth breathing, plus you already found out how you feel after sleeping with a 'holey' cushion. Taping is what we do (do a forum search on it for tips) to keep from mouth breathing if a FF mask is not do-able. Many people do it every night.

If there's a hole in the cushion, tape the cushion. No need to tape your lips since you are still using a FF mask.

But if the silicone resists the tape, then lip taping would at least tide him over til cushion replacement... better to have the option than nothing at all.

and another tick on the 'the more cpap stuff is cleaned the faster it wears out" column. what were you trying to to, drive the devils of apnea out of the thing?

I went *five years* on a full face mask cushion, washing it *GENTLY* every week or so with some warm water and a few drops of dishwashing soap, and wiping it with hand sanitizer nightly to remove oils.

I had a spare, (and, from now on, you should too) but I never felt the need to discard the first cushion, because it kept working fine...

You have spares or backup masks, don't you?
Which specific mask?
Is the cushion replaceable or is it part of the mask and when it wears out, does the entire mask have to be replaced.
Do you have a DME (Durable Medical Equipment) supply store nearby?

There are online sellers who could get a replacement shipped to you in a hurry. (even overnight) Like https://www.cpap.com

Duct tape SHOULD work for a temporary fix.

I use CPAP since 2007 and ate least for 10 years I ve been using the fx swift mask. I have a lot of ripped cushions but couldn t repair using any kind of glue or tape.

Can you please tell me if there is any glue I can use for thia purpose?

Thank you all very much!

Probably not... but cushions are not that expensive alone... check with your dealer.
