"vegan" always sounds like something out of a 50's scifi book. You probably want to blow them up quickly before they spread some sort of virus.

I haven't read all the replies yet, but, I suspect many of us would disagree on the definition of a healthy diet.
I also suspect many would lie about maintaining what they believe to be a healthy diet, especially to themselves.
That said, a concerted look in the mirror will tell each of us if we are actually maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle. I, for one find it futile to lie to myself, because there are too many mirrors around here.

Now if all the gurus could get together and compile the definition of the easy to follow, lifelong healthy diet, they could each get rich and we would all stay young and healthy.

I generally eat pretty well--low carb, high fat, paleo style. But I've been indulging a little here and there--a small potato, a bit of rice or quinoa or legumes that are doing me no good. Time to tighten things up again.

Mostly though, it's eggs, fish, meat, and lots of veggies, a small amount of fruit (mostly berries), fermented foods. I try to keep the foundation solid.
This is my story to a 'T." And about 3 weeks ago I did "tighten" thing up.

49er, my cholesterol is over 200 too with a great lipid profile (except my Lp(a) which they tell me I can not do much about...it's genetic).
Welcome to the club Lilly.

I also have to confess I have been indulging here and there on carbs which greatly spike my blood sugar. But the last few days, when I was greatly tempted to cheat, I didn't. I have also fixed one problem which was not having the right foods to take with me when I have to go out for a long period. As a result, extreme hunger led to my eating the wrong foods because I tried to wait until I had access to the right ones.

An atheist, a vegan, a CrossFitter, a low-carber and a gluten-freer walked into a bar.

How do I know this?

'Cause within three minutes they had told everyone in the damn joint.

Hillary Clinton went on a low-carb diet. What happened next will stun and terrify you.

What about the latest statistics showing colon cancer incidence is increasing in the under-50 population in the U.S.? One of the primary factors is high levels of dietary fat.

Not all fats are created equal. Industrial seed oils (corn, soy, cottonseed, etc.) have a very different effect on the body than the oils in fatty fish like salmon, or the fats in butter from grass-fed cows. Anyone who wants to make fat a large component of their diet for weight-loss purposes has got to pay very close attention to the type of fats they eat (and most do).

Pretty much any population-wide nutrition study done on Americans is going to include mostly people eating the standard American diet -- which is way too high in industrial vegetable oils. That's definitely one factor in "fat" having negative effects in those studies.

Glad to see so many paleo folks on the board! I was 100% paleo for about a year, and it was amazing. Then I got bitten by yet another tick (the perils of hiking and camping here in the humid heartland) and developed the alpha-gal allergy -- no more red meat or butter for me, maybe for a few years, maybe forever. I am so tired of chicken, I can't even express it in words. And good fish is expensive.

Plus my husband and son are vegetarian, so between cooking for them and my new dietary restrictions, I've backslid a lot. Adding beans back into my diet had no effect, which is nice because I love chickpeas. Adding rice and corn back in has not been so successful for me -- but dang it, rice is so cheap and so easy and everyone in my family likes it.

Even when I was doing paleo completely, I wasn't very low carb -- lots of plaintains, sweet potatoes, white potatoes and other root veggies. There's a ton of individual variability in how people handle carbs, and I seem to feel best with a lot of them, just not from grains and sugar.

Anytime this phrase is used, you can be sure it is used by someone who is deep into woo and ignoring the science.

Enh, I'm most concerned about the omega-3 vs. omega-6 distinction, and I feel like the science on that is sound enough for me to pay attention to it. I'm not particularly fussed about some other aspects that people complain about (solvent extraction, whatever), but since I'm already avoiding them to improve my 3/6 balance, it doesn't really matter whether I buy into those other issues or not.
