Anybody on CPAP NOT have sleep problems?

Post by Violet West » Wed Mar 30, 2016 10:32 am

I heartily sympathize with everyone who has sleep problems; I know they are widespread, debilitating, and frustrating.

But I sleep fine. Or at least, I thought I did. No trouble falling asleep, no insomnia, no sleepiness during the daytime. (Some snoring but I am thankfully partnerless so that doesn't matter so much to me). My diagnosis of severe sleep apnea surprised the heck out of me, but it stemmed from a MI and AFIB. So, my prescription for CPAP is designed primarily to reduce the reoccurance of the AFIB and chance of stroke; not primarily for snoring or sleep problems.

Just wondering if anyone here is in the same boat as I am --

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea in 2011. The only symptoms I experienced were some tiredness and snoring. I had no problems with sleepiness during the day or insomnia, but I did toss and turn a lot due to joint aches and pains. I tried a CPAP machine and several different masks (many at my own expense) but could never adapt and just quit trying. Fast forward to 2015 and I had a couple of episodes in the night where I woke up gasping and having some type of beating irregularity with my heart. For each episode, by the time I decided to seek medical help, the beating irregularity ceased and I was fine. The problem went undiagnosed.

This year I had another episode that lasted for about 12 hours and was kept under observation in the hospital over the weekend. The final diagnosis was atrial fibrillation most likely brought on by untreated sleep apnea. Needless to say, that got my attention and I am back on the CPAP and this time having much greater success. I was fortunate enough to find a DME with a very competent and experienced clinician who quickly guided me to the appropriate mask and I have now been on therapy for two months and average over 9 hours per night. My AHI is still not where it needs to be, averaging around 7.5, but I have an appointment coming up in a few weeks where we can make some adjustments as needed. So, I may not be in the exact same boat as you, but I would certainly think we are rowing in the same pond.

My mask is comfortable.

My machine works and stores important data for Sleepyhead.

I sleep ... not perfectly, but pretty well.

I wake up without headaches.

My doctor is smart and talks honestly with me.

My DME sells me only what I need.

Just completed year #2 on CPAP.

Wow! What are YOU doing here? Forum membership requires your doctor be a quack and your DME a thief.... <VBG>

Do you understand that sleep apnea and CPAP are about breathing?

hmm, possibly not.

I understand whatever has been happening has been putting a strain on my heart, though.

Cpap has eliminated all my noticeable apnea symptoms.
But also many of the IMPORTANT ones, which I might never have noticed.
My heart, brain, kidneys, and most everything soft and squishy is better off now.

IF I fall asleep, I have no problems sleeping. However, sleep apnea is a breathing problem. If you have it then you have a higher risk of heart disease and stroke. I wouldn't say it's common to not really have daytime sleepiness, but it is *possible*.
Not all people with sleep apnea snore and not all snoring is sleep apnea. Of course if you are partnerless, how do you know? I even have been in situations with temporary roommates, and didn't know I snored.

+1

Sleep Apnea is a BREATHING DISORDER (while you sleep).........NOT a sleeping disorder.

a perfect example of how little we know about what goes on while we're asleep.

others:

a friend of mine slept like the dead when he was a kid, a broken pipe flooded their house, and he was carried out into the yard, along with the furniture, never knew anything was going on until he woke up sometime later, looking at the trees.

another time, at scout camp, the practical joke they pulled on him was to remove him from his sleeping bag, and carry him down to the river, depositing him there.... all while asleep.
