Looking for dimensions--- Amara View (small)

Post by mjmia3 » Wed Mar 23, 2016 7:28 pm

I'm considering yet another mask for my daughter. She's almost 5 years old. How big is the nose hole? How tall is the mask? Any thing else in addition would be great too (like width on face).

You can always call Cpap.com for any info on things - they're very good about that.

She needs a pediatric mask. Here are the ones carried by cpap.com who are the forum's host - https://www.cpap.com/listing/Pediatric- ... oCIpDw_wcB

Some of these masks have sizing guides. Look for them under the tabs Features, Specs, etc.

All of those masks are nasal only. If she breathes through her mouth, she might need a mask that covers both nose and mouth - full face mask (FFM).

The Amara View small mask is unlikely to fit a 5-year old. It's for adults with small faces.

Do you have a local DME (equipment provider) where you could get an appointment for a pediatric mask fitting?

She requires a full face mask. She leaks from her lips with her jaw closed.

That's good to know. Please go to your original post in this thread and click on "Edit". Change the title to read, "Need FFM for 5-Year Old".

I haven't been able to find a pediatric FFM, but someone else should be able to help.

You can also call some combination of your doctor's office, cpap.com or a local DME. Your doctor's office should be able to give you a recommendation on a pediatric FFM and a local DME who might have to special order one from their distributor.

I wonder if a largish adult nasal mask would work for a FF mask for her? You might need to adapt the straps.

Midway down this page (http://hubpages.com/health/C-Pap-Masks- ... ask-Review) a parent describes using a Phillips Respironics FitLife Total Face CPAP Mask on her 4-year old because they could not find a FFM for pediatric use.

More pictures of the mask, a video, a fitting guide and other information can be found at our forum host's website - https://www.cpap.com/productpage/respir ... l#tips-tab

I'm a relatively small adult, but not unusually small or fine-featured, and the Amara View small is a bit too big for me. I can't imagine that it would fit a 5 year old.

I have a very small face. I tried the Amara View. I found, for me, that it worked for about a week, but once it softened up and got a bit worn, it started to leak, or it moved in my sleep, so then didn't line up correctly on my face. I felt the nose holes were too large for me personally. I went back to the airfit f10. small mask with small head gear....I do know it comes in extra small and also comes in "soft" and "womens", although soft ones are harder to find. My dad used soft, and he loved it....more expensive though.

The small Amara view is too big for me, and I am nearly 69, and I'm bigger than an eight year old.
(Third grader, but, ---not getting into smartness, or the opposite)
I would love to see an extra small, or a petite, but really rather they made one for your child.

Pediatric FF masks do not exist. We tried several nasal masks/pillows including AGI, swift fx, pixi, and wisp). My daughter had her tonsils and adenoids removed. Each night after surgery, she started to leak more and more out of her lips (jaw closed). Finally I had enough, and had to deal with a lot of red tape, including getting a doctors order to give my daughter "permission" to wear a full face mask (aspiration risk). Anyway, she tried on 1 FF and 1 total face. I preferred the total face, my daughter preferred the full face (AirFit F-10 I believe). We got it home, and it would either fall under her chin and leak, or it would have to cover her eyes to get a good seal. I got a lot of backlash from the mask covering her eyes when I asked for help on several FB group sites. Everyone told me I was a bad mom and needed to change her over to a nasal mask. I'll put a link to the video showing what was happening alarm wise compared to her leak. He Homecare company said I needed to at least have a low MV alarm on of 1.0 LPM, I said fine, I'll humor you for 1 night. I took this video when I was sick of the alarms and sent it to them at 6:50am because I was so angry and they wouldn't listen about her needing a FF or TF mask. Here is the link--- https://youtu.be/UsTnyzO0UH8

Here is her breathing without CPAP before surgery:

Here is her breathing without CPAP almost 3 weeks after surgery:
https://youtu.be/UsTnyzO0UH8

She was diagnosed with Severe OSA in her sleep study. On a CPAP of 9, she was still obstructing but her AHI on 9 brought her down to the Mild OSA category. In her study, she went 3.5 hours on RA without REM, on a CPAP of 6 she never entered REM. On 8, she had 45 minutes of REM. When they increased it to 9, she had another 15 min of REM. She also started having centrals show up after CPAP was initiated.

Standard practice for adults using nasal interfaces and mouthbreathing or mouthleaking is to use a chinstrap (https://www.cpap.com/cpap-mask-parts/cp ... straps.php). Chinstraps can be homemade from various stretch materials. Results from using chinstraps are mixed.

Some of us on this forum have success using soft cervical collars - https://www.cpap.com/cpap-mask-parts/cp ... straps.php.

On another issue, I suggest you keep all your posts in this thread. It gives the forum members a comprehensive view of the problem and what you have tried. Starting multiple threads can cause confusion and give an incomplete picture.

A chin strap won't help her situation, it's her lips that leak, not her jaw opening. She is almost 5 years old. To make it even more exciting, her mask has been sliding off of her chin creating a massive leak that I have been fighting every day. It's a pain!

Are you working with a pediatric sleep practice?

You need a group similar to this - http://www.uchicagokidshospital.org/specialties/sleep/

Do you live near a major urban area?

If you don't live near a pediatric practice it's worth traveling to one!
