Seriously need help, DH says my cpap blows on him at night!

Post by NJsharon » Sat Dec 05, 2015 2:55 am

I have a Resmed S9 elite cpap machine with EPR & I love it. But hubby is constantly complaining it blows air on him at night.

Well last night it was bad. Hubby woke me up, saying it is blowing on him. Said he was all the way over the other side of our king bed & can still feel it. I called him selfish. Couldn't get back to sleep, so at 3.30am I was awake.

Ugh.

So are there any cpaps that do not blow air out in front or to the side, but rather up, towards the forhead maybe instead?!

Oh & I wear a full facemask, hence the blowing air I guess?! I have a Quattro FX full face mask with headgear.

So mad at my hubby right now, but trying to be nice & proactive. So help a girl out please.

Thanks.

Anyone experience with Airfit F10 full face mask? Maybe this will diffuse the air more?

The Amara View vents up, but if you are running high pressures I doubt any mask will be quiet.
Does he complain about the noise, too? He must be pretty sensitive if he can feel it from that distance. The Amara seems to disperse the air pretty well, but if your head is turned toward him, he'd probably feel it but not if turned up or away.

Some people put a small pillow between them...

No, he doesn't complain about the sound, just that it is blowing on him. Really I think he is super sensitive, it is a king size bed & I am not that close to him. lol

But trying to be nice & look for a better mask that disperses the air a bit better. I thought this one did, but maybe there are better ones out there I wondered?

Will it change the direction the air blows if you can re-route your hose, or do you already use a "hose management system"?

Try the P10 if you can use nasal pillows - almost no draft.

It's not the machine, it's the mask that is blowing air on him.

You can also face away from him as much as possible.

I think the AirFit model line is supposed to diffuse the vented air so it is less annoying to everyone.
I don't have any personal experience with the full face AirFit F10 but I do have experience with the AirFit P10 nasal pillow and the vented air simply can't be felt unless I put my hand about an inch away from the vent.
I think I would be trying the AirFit F10 and see how far the vented air goes with it. Sure worth a try.

My husband never complained about the vented air but when I switched to the P10 he remarked that not only does he not hear anything but he never feels the cold air on his back or face like he used to....so he never complained because that is his nature to think of me first...but he noticed it and upon questioning he told me that he just would change his position and pull the bed covers up to block the air flow when he felt the air blowing on him. He says now he never feels it no matter how close to me he is.
YMMV depending on how sensitive your husband is but I would think the F10 would be worth a try.

If you could use the nasal pillow mask...the P10 is pretty darn sweet and if he can feel that air vent clear across the bed...he really is a prime candidate for the Princess and the Pea story lead character.

Would switching sides of the bed work?

Just as others have mentioned... sounds like you might want to try a different mask. My DME was pretty nice and gave me a couple masks to try out. I tried the F10, wasn't crazy about the fit.. then my dog decided he wanted to see how it tasted. But my favorite so far is the F&P Simplus. It does exhaust out the front but it seems to be very diffused and I can't feel it beyond a couple inches.

I did have the same fear when I first had the mask and I turned toward my wife. But even in our queen size bed she hasn't said anything about feeling air. Only comment has been when I get a leak or when the mask farts.

Hi NJ Sharon,

First Let me say you have beautiful blue eyes. While I used an illustration for my avatar, the dark circles are pretty accurate right now (but getting better!).

Ok, I read your post earlier and it has bugged me all day. The best I can tell, you've been using a cpap for about two years? Is DH just now developing a sensitivity to air?

Truthfully, I wouldn't change a mask if you're happy with what you have and it helps your health. Ask DH what solutions he proposes that will maintain a high quality of care for you and address his sensitivities.

You are much nicer than me. I'd let him see if the dog's breathing bothered him sleeping the dog house.

Wrap something like t-shirt material around the exhaust vent. Be sure it's porous enough to still let the air out, and don't block the vent with something like rubber bands or tape.

If necessary, sleep separately. It's worth it for your health.

The F10 vents through the hose where it connects with the mask...2 small outlets...they bug me sometimes because it blows directly on my eyes...Having had cataract surgery in both eyes, I'm prone to dry eyes and sometimes it gets so bad at night, I put drops in both eyes. Hard to believe the mask is blowing all the way across the bed.

However, I've been "in my own bed, in my own room" for so long, I'm not bothering anyone. Heck, my wife's sleeping habits were worse than mine so I gladly moved to another bedroom...

The cloth masks (Sleepweaver) from Circadiance seem to have very well diffused exhaust flow.
When I wore the Elan, I could barely feel the flow, which was mostly onto my chest, but quite subtle.
I had been hoping to try the Anew (full size), and report on my experience, but the budget is currently uncooperative.
