I have been using my M Series Auto for a couple of years, and didn't think another product would come along that could top it. The Intellipap AutoAdjust sure gives it a run for the money though. Although difficult to adjust to an APAP without 'AFlex', brethability is still above average, and very good. Features that stand out and where the Intellipap is tops include ease of use size/compactness, silent operations, and portability. By far the quietest of any machine I've ever used, the intellipap is barely audible. This is a great machine for anyone whose sleeping companion compolains about the sound the machine makes. My partner didnt even know the machine was on the first night. The unit is well designed and compact, which makes it very suitable for travelers. In fact, the bag is so small (as is the unit) that you'll need to pack your hose and mask in other luggage. The unit in its bag looks more like a traditional large camera than a CPAP. The unit is very easy to use, with many features automatically on. In fact, I found the auto on too sensitive and turned it off, but its a great feature to be able to unpack the device, plug and go. Lastly on the unit, the integrated humidifier and water chamber are the most compact and yet most integrated I've seen. Ease of cleaning and maintenance of the water chamber tops the M Series Auto AFLEX hands down. For those who use clinical software to track treatment or to see your own apneas progress at home , the DeVilbiss software is a breeze to setup. Installation takes only moments (compared with the M Series software), and does not install any heavy duty software that bogs down your PC. Functionality wise, the software has all the basic features, and is easy to setup and use. Graphing and data features, though not as detailed as M Series Auto is more than sufficient. The interface is easy to use, and the software automatically detects the card when plugged in. Also, the card is a small MMC card, with a tiny USB drive that it plugs into. Overall, a much more advanced software and easy to use.

By far the most comfortable APAP I've owned, the M Series Auto with AFlex has the best breathability due to the exclusive AFlex. That said, it failed to stand up to the competition when it came to size, portability, software, and ease of use. Did I mention noise? While not too noisy, the M Series is noticeable by others sleeping with you, so much so I had to buy a sound wave machine to play background 'ocean' sounds. That said, the unit is of average size (small without the heated humidifier, but larger with... the Intellipap is superior in this, with a great integrated design taking little space and very packable). The software, while thorough, is too complex ; as an IT professional, even I had a challenge installing the software. On that note, the software installs Microsoft SQL Server, which hogs up much memory and processing power... not ideal for a home PC. That said, the software has great graphics and the ability to track / trend several days and months at a time. The smartcard, though large and bulky, is average in size. My one big complaint about the software: data periods of therapy 'usage' (ie each time you upload) cannot be combined! So you only see each 'session' 'usage' one at a time. This is disappointing since SQL server can definately handle this. But enough about the software. The M Series Auto is a great unit for breathability and still my first recommendation for anyone who has difficulty tolerating CPAP/APAP therapy. However, with the introduction of the Intellipap, I believe anyone who needs mobility or portability will best benefit from the Intellipap. It's also tops for ease of use and software, and less than whisper quiet. Sorry M Series Auto AFLEX, you'be been beaten.

This is an incredible machine. The smartlink is very user friendly. The machine is suprisingly small. After using the humidifier for a full night, there was still plenty of water in the chamber. Filling the chamber can be a little challenging though, as the area to fill it with water is extremely narrow. The air intake is located on the upper right of the back, making it almost impossible to use with pursleep. The cord is great as there is no brick attached to it. This machine travels extremely well. I have purses bigger than the travel bag. This is an extremely quiet machine. You definitely wouldn't be keeping someone awake. You can actually tell the machine what length of hose you are using so it will increase your pressure accordingly.

I have used this machine for quite a while and love it. I like how the humidifer is hidden so in my opinion this machine is more attractive looking. It is small and compact and since the air intake is located toward the bottom in the back, it works great with pursleep. The cord has one of those bricks on it which can be a pain to hide. I don't think I have went a night without smelling the humidifer chamber from running out of water. This was an extremely hard challenge. Both machines are incredible in their own way.

NOISE LEVEL: VERY quiet operation. Surprising how much of a difference this makes for a comfortable sleeping environment. DISPLAY: Large, very readable backlit display with adjustable dimmer. Lots of useful information available on display without having to use Data Link software. However, even on dimmest setting display is too bright and I had to cover it. Why is it so hard for manufacturers to keep in mind that sleeping usually occurs in a DARK ROOM? EXHALATION RELIEF: No exhalation relief is the biggest limitation of this product. May be less of an issue for those needing lower pressures, but I could really tell the difference in comfort level--it was harder to stay asleep with the IntelliPAP. DESIGN: Elegant and compact. Blower and humidifier base fit together cleanly. Non-skid bottom surface is typical of the attention to detail. There is a trick to the latch releasing the PAP from the humidifier unit, simple once you figure it out but not obvious. Loses points for humidifier tray design--very awkward to fill, although it is easy to empty completely. Due to the awkwardness of filling the tray I would only use humidifier base for travel; for home use I recommend a separate F&P HC150. TRAVEL: Very good for travel. Built-in power supply reduces clutter and cable jumble. However, with SmartLink data collection module attached the total unit volume really isn't smaller than the M Series Auto, only the dimensions are different. I have a dedicated travel bag that perfectly fits my M Series Auto and associated hose guide, mask components, etc. but the IntelliPAP won't fit in it. However, the IntelliPAP package includes a sturdy and very nicely designed travel bag though it might not hold all your accessories. USER SETUP AND CONTROL: Similar provider menu setup process form the OSD on both units, so no advantages either way. DATA COLLECTION & ANALYSIS: Data card holds 3 years worth of data. Built-in oximeter port and integration with data collection is very thoughtful--provided you use the "approved" oxi models (I don't have one so can't comment on data reporting). CONCLUSION: In almost every way the IntelliPAP is a better designed unit than the M Series Auto except one: the lack of exhalation relief. However, for me that feature trumps everything else so I'm sticking with the Respironics unit as my primary. Those with lower pressure requirements could easily go the other way.

NOISE LEVEL: Moderately noisy--not as bad as previous units I've owned but the changes in pitch and volume due to the auto-titrating and exhalation relief can be quite annoying in an otherwise quiet room. I frequently resort to white noise or leave TV or music on (not the most sociable solution) or use earplugs. DISPLAY: Small display with no backlighting is not really usable for anything more than setup. The bright blue LED buttons are as obnoxious as all the reviews say and need to be covered. Why is it so hard for manufacturers to keep in mind that sleeping usually occurs in a DARK ROOM? EXHALATION RELIEF: Biggest advantage of this unit for me is exhalation relief. My pressure is quite high (12-16), and A-Flex (and C-Flex before it) have been essential to the quality of my treatment. They're not perfect, but in my opinion reducing the "exhale against a wind tunnel" effect is the biggest PAP technology advance since auto-titration. DESIGN: Compact but awkward in the way the blower connects to the humidifier/base unit. Humidifier chambers are very susceptible to leaks. I only use humidifier base for travel; for home use I recommend the F&P HC150. TRAVEL: Very good for travel. Compact size is somewhat compromised by external power supply brick and associated attachments & cables, not very elegant.Total unit volume really isn't smaller than the IntelliPAP, only the dimensions are different. Included travel case is minimal (I found the Brigs & Riley model 225 Vertical Tote to be a perfect fit for the M and all the accessories I carry). USER SETUP AND CONTROL: Similar provider menu setup process form the OSD on both units, so no advantages either way. DATA COLLECTION & ANALYSIS: Data card only holds 1 week's worth of data (IntelliPAP card holds 3 years). 3rd party card reader software is difficult/confusing to install. Encore Reader software available to consumers has limited capability but provides adequate reporting info.

The DeVilbiss Intellipap is very user friendly. The setup is easy, instructions are clear. The machine has a nice size footprint so it takes up very little space. It is taller than the M-Series but less wide. Esthetically I prefer the white color of the machine because it adds to the clean look and I definitely like the fact that you don't have the large power brick behind the machine linking the humidifier. Takes up less space that way too. The Intellipap is a VERY quiet machine. To me it is much quieter than the M-Series and the M-Series is a quiet machine. The lights around the buttons are green and fairly non-intrusive. The humidifier is part of the nice compact stack and I like that. It doesn' hold a lot of water but it should easily last anyone through the night even on a higher setting. I think the humidifier is harder to fill because of the tilt and angled way you need to hold it while filling, so for me that is a negative. The Smartlink software is very easy to install and read, however you don't get as much detail as you get from the M-Series software. For the average person that is not detail driven the smartlink info is adequate but I think there should be a definition list as to what certain letters mean in the available graphs and maybe instruction on what your reading. With a little tweaking this software could give the average user enough to make us happy and informed. The actual card fits into my computer card reader, It's about the size of a camera card, and you can change settings on your machine by making that change to the Smartlink program. Once the card is placed back into your machine the settings are changed. The smartlink also makes it very easy to save the reports to PDF format. There should be an option for an 8 ft hose and a selection for mask option. I also think there should be a swivel for attaching the hose to the machine. Maybe a 3 inch tall round swivel tube that would bring the hose connector to the top of the stack. I have the machine set to turn on automatically when I breathe into the mask and the Intellipap is very responsive and turns on immediately. I have to say that when I used the Intellipap the first night it felt perfectly comfortable. I don't require ramping and I feel like the Intellipap fits me better. My breathing pattern seems to sync better with the Intellipap rhythm. This machine is a little easier to travel with because of the square footprint and the lack of that extra cumbersome power brick.

The M-series is a really nice machine. I have been using mine now for about a year. The M-Series auto is quiet and fairly easy to setup. One negative is the big power brick that either takes up more room behind it or hangs off the back of your table. The machine does have bright blue lights on it and some people complain about those bright lights. This have never been a concern for me. The humidifier does not hold a lot of water but it will last through the night for me even on a higher setting. It is also easy to fill and clean. The filters are easy to change too. I have the machine set to auto on and it usually takes about 3 breaths to come on for me. The Encore Pro software is pretty easy to put on the computer but I had a little problem getting the card to read. The card is the size of a credit card and requires a separate reader. You do get more in depth information with this software than you get from the Intellipap. I always use my M-Series on Auto with A/flex and to me the A/flex made a big difference in my tolerance and ability to breath against a machine. The A/flex makes it so easy to breath out. I don't use ramping with my M-Series. My only problem with the machine is that I sometimes feel like I have to set my rhythm to match the machine. I don't know if this is a fact, this is just how I feel. The machine is easy to travel with but would be much better without the power brick.

The Smartlink Data Module failed within 3 days of first use. The replacement Smartlink Data Module lasted 5 days before the same error code of "EA1 Module Fault Contact Provider" appeared on the LCD screen. The third Smartlink Data Module is still working. I have left the unit assembled because I am afraid the Smartlink Data module will fail prematurely if I take the unit apart. In my opinion, a failure rate of 66% for the Smartlink Data Modules that I used is excessive. I work on and with sensitive electronic equipment so I know that I did not connect anything improperly. Luckily, the Data Modules are covered by the DeVilbiss 3 year warranty. However, the data on the first 2 modules was lost. The ability to collect, safely store and interpret data from my APAP is critical in monitoring my on-going treatment. I was not impressed by the performance of this "Smartlink Data Module". The lack of exhalation relief forced me to change my pressure to 9-13 cm. I use a pressure of 10-14 on my M-series APAP. The ramp feature allowed me to adjust to the lack of exhalation relief. The humidifier works extremely well and never ran out of water. I used a humidifier setting of 6-8. The software package loaded quickly and easily. It was easy to use and provided adequate information. The Data card and USB reader was easy to use. My AHI readings were higher on the Intellipap but still below 5.0. My reading ranged from 1.0 to 3.2 on the Intellipap and usually I run AHI's of 1-2 on the M-series APAP. The Intellipap is quieter than my M-series. The carry case was designed to store the individual components but it was easy to modify so the unit could be stored as a complete assembly. It also has an expansion feature to increase the interior volume. It did not have enough space for my Activa mask. My M-series case does not enough space for my mask either. Overall the Intellipap performed well but with the poor showing of my Smartlink Data Modules and the lack of exhalation relief it did not convince me to give up my M series AUTO with Aflex. I will probably use it as a backup machine.

The things I like about my Respironics M-series Auto: 1) A-flex I don't feel like I am breathing against the wind. 2) Data storage and interpretation I have lost 2 days worth of data in the past 2 years. I now download my information weekly and erase my Smartcard after downloading. I have not lost any data since following this protocol. I have had several 0.0 AHI readings and I feel great. 3) Humidification I usually set the humifier at 3 or 4 and I do not run out of water before I wake up. 4) Rugged This APAP has travelled by air and automobile without any issues. I carry it with my lap top computer and it has always worked when I needed it. 5) Ability to run on 12 volts. 6) 0.0 AHI readings I have experienced many 0.0 AHI readings on my M-series. I usually find out my numbers "after the fact", but they do correlate to some great feeling mornings and days. I can tell the days that my AHI are higher than the norm. Dislikes: 1) Large power brick This is usually not shown on pictures. It looks like an after thought. 2)Blue lights on buttons I don't mind the blue lights but some people might say they are too bright. I do wish the lights would dim or go out after a certain amount of time or during the daytime.

Despite the Intellipap not having any form of exhale relief I found it more comfortable to breathe. The transition from inhale to exhale and vice versa is very smooth. Because of this I think my problem with aerophagia has improved some. That being said, I don't think I would have been able to tolerate this machine when I first started on CPAP because it doesn't have exhale relief. Exhale relief sure makes a machine beginner friendly and it is a major fault for this machine to not have that. Also, I didn't like the latch that keeps the humidifier tank closed. It wasn't difficult to work but it felt too brittle like I could easily break it. I like that the machine sits on top of the humidifier thus taking up less space than my M-Series. The humidifier also holds plenty of water and I can sleep 2 nights before refilling (humidifier set at 4). I also love that the machine can run off of DC power and will automatically switch over if the AC power is lost. I haven't tested that feature yet but if it works it sounds great. The green lights are great. They light up bright when you first turn the machine on or are using the menu but dim significantly after a bit of inactivity.

   By Challenge participant

I love the 2 forms of exhale relief. This machine is very beginner friendly. The humidifier tank has a great latch (new style tank). I wish the tank held more water though. I also have never liked the side by side form factor of the humidifier and machine. I much prefer the stacked form factor that so many others have. The bright blue lights are very annoying and require you to put a towel over them so you can sleep.

  By Challenge participant

There are so many pros to the IntelliPap, it has changed my attitude towards sleep apnea it is now so easy to go to sleep and get a great nights sleep, it's as though the machine isn't there and I am just breathing naturally. Set up was very easy, does not have bulky power adapter. This machine is so quiet I never know it is on, and it comes on instantly when you put the mask on. I like the fact that it tells you when you need to change the filter. I also like the fact that the light is green yellow and doesn't like up the room like the blue light on the MSeries. It also comes with a great expanding travel case. The amazing thing is when I download the card information, which is very easy and the smaller card is great, what a difference in the results. With the MSeries I usually ran AHI of 3 and pressure of 10-12, with the Intellipap my AHI is 0.8 to 1 and the pressure is between 6-8. I don't understand it but I feel great. I used to wake up at night with the MSeries and air just blasting my face and making me cough I would have to turn the machine off and back on, this does not happen with the Intellipap you just don't know it is there, just the right amount of air not too much or too little, and I don't seem to have the problems with dry mouth and sore throat, I also don't see the need for a chin strap to keep my mouth shut and my leak rate is great. I don't like the software it is harder to read than the MSeries and the piece that attaches to the back of the machine to record data seems to come loose and I have to keep pushing it back. I also don't like how tall it is when you attach the humidifier, I keep mine in my nightstand drawer and with the humidifer attached I can't close the drawer, which I could with the MSeries, putting it on the side would seem like a better design. The humidifer also has a narrow opening to fill which is difficult and the hose should be on the front not the back. I had was a question about the software and I called DeVilbiss and the guy I spoke to was nice but told me I really had to contact my DME with questions (I did not tell them I was in this challenge) they should change this attitude, because so many people buy over the internet and need support. I love this machine and would recommend it for anyone looking for a new machine it has completely changed my therapy for the better I can not say enough about how comfortable this machine is! Thank you CPAPTalk.com for having challenges like this and allowing me to participate!!

   By Challenge participant

I like the footprint of the MSeries better, because the humidifier is on the side it is not as tall and fits in my nightstand drawer and it is easier to fill and I like the software better.

FYI - setting auto mode 10-13 (1st 2 weeks) changed both to 10-13.5 last 2 weeks. Both units used approx 2 weeks each during trial. Three - Five day use, then switched. Preferred IntelliPAP breathability. The M series sounds like it's exhaling before I do and tends to pace my breathing (the power of suggestion maybe). I feel that I breathe slower with the IntelliPAP. Both are small and easy to carry. Prefer traveling with IntelliPAP when taking humidifier (which I do). Without humidifier prefer form factor of M series for travel. Software to generate reports was easy on both counts. I am a MAC user and would love it if a vendor would offer MAC versions also. AHI reading was generally lower with the M series, but I felt more rested after using the IntelliPAP. Could be related to breathing rate (see above) but can't really tell why.

   By Challenge participant

Quietness was a wash to me, but my wife preferred the sound of the IntelliPAP over the M series so IntelliPAP wins on her preference. Both are quite easy to use and I had no isuues with either. Like smaller footprint of IntelliPAP vs M series with humidifier. Fits better on my night stand. I generally used the c-flex (setting 1) on my M series. IntelliPAP has no programmable exhale help, but I did not find it any more difficult to exhale or had any issues after waking up. I am not a big user or believer in these software algorithms. If you are a user of the algorithms you may need to use the M series.

Humidifer tray very well made. SD card very good idea -- much better then propritary card. Very compact and quiet. Turns off too quickly -- almost a vacumn for a second. Would like more data stored on card, Oximeter data input option.

   By Challenge participant

Very confortable compared to non AFlex product. Would like more data stored on card, Oximeter data input option. Power cord comes apart too easily. Needs better battery interface to 12 volt car battery. Needs to be less sensitive to voltage loss on power-input.

Did not like: Auto mode did not change pressures during the night to accommodate my changing pressure needs. No Exhalation Relief Feature IntelliPap's SmartLink Therapy Management System provides significantly less detailed information. My AHI was 5-6 times higher with the IntelliPAP than with the M Series. The IntelliPAP AutoAdjust never adjusted my pressure during the night as does my M Series Auto, even though it was set to run in auto mode with the same low pressure/high pressure settings as the M Series. According to the IntelliPAP report, the pressure remained constant, at the lowest pressure setting, throughout the night every night. I attribute my significantly higher AHI numbers to this failure of the IntelliPAP to sense need for pressure increases and adjust accordingly. My average AHI with my M Series is 0.4. The average AHI using the IntelliPAP was 2.5. Throughout the trial, I wondered how IntelliPAP could be fairly compared to the M Series Auto with A-FLEX since the IntelliPAP has no exhalation pressure relief feature. A-FLEX (or EPR or any form of exhalation pressure relief) is a "must have" comfort feature for me, so I found the IntelliPAP to be significantly less comfortable for me, though I do understand that feature is not so desirable for all CPAP users. Finally, IntelliPAP's SmartLink Therapy Management System provides significantly less detailed information about one's therapy than does the M Series Encore.

   By Challenge participant

Like: Auto Mode adjusts pressures as needed throughout the night, automatically raising pressure to respond to events. A-FLEX Encore software provides greater detail than does IntelliPap's SmartLink Therapy Management System Lower AHI (averaging 0.4 versus 2.5 with the IntelliPAP) The IntelliPAP AutoAdjust never adjusted my pressure during the night as does my M Series Auto, even though it was set to run in auto mode with the same low pressure/high pressure settings as the M Series. Let me start by saying that both units are excellent. They are quiet, have delay ramp up features, heated humidifiers, small footprints and are very well built. The Intellipap is quieter, even though both units are very quiet. I really like that the AC adapter is built into the unit hiding the rather large adapter that comes with the M Series unit. This makes it easier when packing the unit for travel and saves you from having to hide the adapter for appearance reasons with the M Series. The panel buttons are large and easy to find. I do wish you could turn the panel lights off completely (on both units).

   By Challenge participant

I like the overall appearance of the M series better. It's has a sleeker design making it less noticeable on the night stand. The deisgn of the humidifier tray is a bit more user friendly. The AC adapter is large making it more difficult to pack when traveling and something extra to deal with. It's not as quiet but with the optional wisper cap it's pretty close.

  By Challenge participant

data is very easily transfered from unit to computer via the awesome usb reader, hose pulled out of machine way too easily, like the compact style, humidifier tank could be a bit larger, color and style looks more like a clock radio on the nightstand which is nice, filters easy to clean and change, nice longer power cord with no dang brick, it seems highly possible to be able to do a program update on this one which would help keep it more current, all in all you can not go wrong with the function or style of this unit

   By Challenge participant

data card remains in the unit which is nice, humidifier is too small, noisy - has that vadar sound as I breathe, has a larger footprint on the nightstand and looks medical, has been very reliable, totally dislike the power cord with brick, DME originally gave me the outdated humidifier and a Plus unit but I quickly learned from the CPAP.com forum to get it swapped out so question why they even make such a basic unit, all in all, you can not go wrong with the function of this unit but it lacks any "non medical" feel. It would be nice to see on the display your results in the morning versus having to upload the card, it seems like it is not possible to do a program update on this one

Intellipap Pro The machine is very compact with the power supply built into the machine. CPAP.com set up the machine per my original prescription and it worked out of the box. The travel case is great and has plenty of space for storing your hose and mask. The humidifier water container slides into the base of the machine and it appears that the water would be less likely to be accidentally spilled into the machine electronics as compared to the M Series. It was very quiet and the software system is superior to the M Series. It uses a standard SD Memory card and a small inexpensive USB reader that just plugs into a USB port on the computer. The software installed easily and allows you to save the reports as PDF files. The software allows you to fine tune the setting of the machine instead of using a set of complicated button manipulations. I will probably relegate the Intellipap as a travel CPAP though it works admirably as a main CPAP. Con I dislike the cream color since it looks out of place on the nightstand. When comparing the 30 day software test results of the Intellipap vs the M Series my AHI was higher part of the time but that could have been the result of Allergy problems I had during the time my AHI was elevated.

   By Challenge participant

M Series Pro I prefer the black color of the M Series. It disappears on the nightstand and looks like a radio. Some people have complained about the blue lights being too bright but I do not find that to be a problem. The software reports are more detailed than the Intellipap reports. I prefer the M Series reports. Con The M Series uses a proprietary smart card and smart card reader (expensive). The smart card reader is very touchy and does not like to be plugged in and removed from the computer USB port. You can print the reports from the software but cannot save as a PDF. You cannot change machine settings thru the software. I much prefer the Intellipap SD Card and reader.

Liked the white color, the light on machine (able to change the humidity without turning on overhead lights). Great size for traveling. Really quiet. When traveling with friends they don't realize I have it turned on. Humidity reaches temp quickly, perhaps, because of the greater heated surface area. Liked the idea of being able to use an oximeter with it; however, I haven't tried that yet. Only one plug in, so both the unit and humidifier could be used with a bettery (with right connections, of course). Auto turn-on is great! Only difficulties at first were with the Smart Link (made me feel dumb; but then I'm 70 and technically impaired) and then, there was getting the water chamber open! But that's what the support team is for & they were helful (and kind). (This part of message is for Devilbiss only: Review page 7 re: water chamber. The Figures 8--10 are not pictures on page 5 (only goes to Figure 7). Maybe, if you could put a sticker on the Smart Link CD for old folks who can't read the fine print & maybe a sticker on the water chamber with which direction to push. One more thing, can't remember where the typo was--either on SmartLink disc when installing or maybe on downloaded program. But there is a "dp" or "pd" out of place. Made me look to see where was manufacturered. With the ecomony, we try to buy at home! So, you might not want that to be a consideration if you want to sell in U.S. One more comment, the video (color/lighting & content were excellent). Thanks for the opportunity. Great product!)

I like being able to check each day how long I spent in apnea during the night. Gives actual seconds, rather than occurances. Can change setting on CPAP, rather than on smart card. Was easy to set-up. Easy to use. Wasn't too much info. Only 2 dislikes: (1)has two cords for CPAP & humidifier, so unable to use humidifier except as passover, if I should need to use battery. 2) Have to turn lights on, to change settings.

I loved the large bright display -- easy to read and adjust. I loved the way the auto on started on the first breath. I didn't like that it took so long for the auto shutoff when I took off the mask. I found it difficult to fill the reservoir (I use a gallon bottle, and had to get a smaller cup to fill it every time.)

   By Challenge participant

I found the display difficult to see -- I'd have liked more contrast and bigger print. It was a little confusing to adjust because I couldn't read the screen easily. I don't like the extra "brick" on the cord. The "brick" makes it difficult to pack, and sometimes the cord pulls out of it inadvertently, turning off the machine. I like the way the auto shutoff turns off quickly when you take off the mask. I didn't like having to wait for 3 breaths before it started. I liked how easy it was to fill the reservoir.

Instructions were very thorough and easy to use. I liked how it showed real-time pressure throughout the night. The travel bag is a bit bulky and probably more as a separate carryon (rather than placing it in an actual carryon). There was a high-pitched noise that didn't affect my sleep, but could still be heard. The menus displayed a lot more information, and was a lot more customizable.

   By Challenge participant

Although the power supply is bulky, the machine itself is very slim, and the bag has useful compartments. I felt that this required higher pressure than the intellipap. The menus are a lot simpler but not as advanced as intellipap's menus. M series definitely wins over form factor, but I felt that in terms of using the machine at night, Intellipap gave a much natural and easier air pressure. Aflex makes me feel like I need to gasp for air since it stops airflow.

The small size and quietness are very good. The screen is very easy to read, and the memory card / software setup worked great on my computer. Two problems: (1) The screen/button backlight is WAAAAY too bright. It should either be made dimmer out of the box or end-user adjustable. It was brighter than the moon. I had to put a shirt over it every night just to sleep. Sadly, the M-Series has the exact same problem, though that machine is dimmer than yours, it is still too bright. (2) The humidifier in your machine is, dare I say it, too efficient. There are many nights where I live (San Diego, CA) where I get too much moisture with the heater set to "OFF" and I get too little moisture if I remove the humidifier altogether. I suspect this is because of the design allowing for large water surface area in the water carrier. The M-series' is smaller. (3) The M-series got a higher "ease of travel" score because I don't have have to separate the humidifier from the main machine in order to fit it in the travel bag it came with. With the IntelliPAP's bag, I was forced to, unless I missed a zipper somewhere. It's not a big difference but it is something I noticed. (4) As for breathability, I did miss the M-series CFLEX but not as much as I thought I would. Overall, I do like the IntelliPAP more and it has become my machine machine.

   By Challenge participant

I like the CFLEX feature as well as more granularity in humidifier settings. (IntelliPAP's choices are "water in your mask" at "OFF" to "breathing under water" at 10. M-series' choices are "barely any moisture at all" to "breathing under water". Many nights I need "barely any moisture at all" and the IntelliPAP can't seem to do that.) However, the memory card / software system is inferior and difficult to use. The screen is way, way, way too bright and I have to cover it with a shirt in order to sleep. And, most importantly, the M-series easily acquires a bad odor and has been completely resistant to all attempts to remove it. It has made the machine almost unusable for me.

Like: -very quiet -small footprint (although can be a disadvantage. I tipped it over once) -user-friendly software, SD card -no power "brick" Don't like: -no expiratory pressure relief, major drawback. -weak heater. I had to run it on 9 and 10 all the time.

   By Challenge participant

Like: -AFLEX! Major feature! -good heater, easy to clean tank Don't like: -power brick -cumbersome software and card reader -a little louder (I guess because of AFLEX)

  By Challenge participant

Pro: 1. I like the modular setup with machine, humidifier and SmartLink a lot. There is only one power cord to plug in, not the multiple cords and huge "power block" of the M Series. Makes carrying case more compact, just need space for a mask! 2. Like setting for different hose lenghts - either 6 foot or 10 foot hoses. However, no instructions on what setting to use if your hose is 8 feet like one of mine! CON: 1. Doesn't have an A-Flex type of capability. 2. Smartlink Desktop - didn't come with any real instructions. Also SmartLink doesn't give as much detail in reports as Encore Pro in the M Series. 3. Not a major con but I don't like the hose coming out of top and back of machine. Works well if you run hose over your head but not if you bring it under the covers. Kinks hose if you have to run it around or over the machine. I'd prefer the hose to come out of the front below display. Conclusion: Overall, this is an excellent, quiet machine especially well designed to carry and travel. (I travel a lot and find this a much better machine for travel - compact, durable, etc.) Although breathability is excellent I don't think it is as good as the A-flex feature on the M Series. Exhale not bad but noticeable maybe because I'm use to the A-Flex M Series. For me, the IntelliPAP would be perfect if it had an A-Flex type feature. Since I now have both, I'll probably use the IntelliPAP for travel and teh M Series for home. If I could only have one, it would probaby be the InteliPAP because of its all around capabilities. Even though I like the A-Flex and think breathabililty is better on the M Series, the breathability on the IntelliPAP is still very good. So I give it an overall rating of 5-Superior.

   By Challenge participant

Pro: 1. The M Series is more like natural breathing probably because of the A-Flex feature. For me, this is a big plus and I think one for anyone having trouble getting use to a CPAP or APAP. 2. The Encore Pro software gives good detailed information. Con: 1. Not as "modular" or easy to take apart for packing and travel. Too many cords and a large heavy power supply "block" to carry and pack. (I really dislike this setup.) 2. Feels flimsy and the "doors" on humidifier and flap over data screen are easy to break. Seems especially fragile when you have to pack and unpack it repeatedly at airport security and it is handled by people who are not as careful as they should be. (Mine is getting pretty banged up.) 3. The humidifier dial seems like a good idea, but it will not easily stay in position between number settings. It needs to be more "continuous." 4. Why put the hose out the backside? Hos is either kinked or covers display coming out the back. Personally, I've turned the machine around and look at the display and buttons upside down so hose comes out the "front" or side I'm on. Conclusion: For breathability, above all else, this is an excellent machine and breathability counts for a lot in my mind. For travel, however, it is not the best and humidifier control is less than optimal. I only rate it as high as I did (4-Above Average) primarily because of the A-Flex and breathability factor. Otherwise, I'd rate it lower.

Like Better: Size SD card for data The automatic start when you put the mask on a start breathing is quicker than with the M Series Did not like: I could hear the unit more than the M series when I was going to sleep The greenish display

   By Challenge participant

Like Better: The appearance of the M Series is nicer (the black case, blue lights) The M series is a bit quieter Did not like: Display hidden under door Bright blue button lights The strange power supply connections with the humidifier Proprietary smart card reader

The power supply seperate and dangling in the middle of the cord is a big hassel.

I was able to assemble the IntelliPaP within 30 minutes and the assembly instructions were adequate for me. I don't know if my Mom could have done it though. From what I remember the M Series came assembled with its humidifier so assembly was not an issue. I have found the IntelliPaP was quieter (at 11-17cm H2O)than the M Series with its Whisper Cap installed. The only thing I noticed, sound wise, for the IntelliPaP was quiet whistling when I breathe, but this was bearable. Filling the IntelliPaP was a little awkward if you follow the manual. It might be easier if the halves of the water chamber were separated by I was afraid of overfilling it this way. The IntelliPaP does not seem to chase my apnea as much as the M Series. The 90% pressure was around 13cm H2O. The software is comprehensive. You can use it to change all the machine settings by programming the memory card and do not have to do the somewhat cumbersome manipulations manually. One thing I like, even though I do not know how much difference it makes, was that the hose length used can be changed in the programming. The software is more complicated to use than the M Series but like the flexibility. The reports provided are adequate to my needs, I did not take the IntelliPaP on the road but it does not appear to take up too much room. I don't know if I will take it on the road since I would have to remove the humidifier fro the main unit to make it fit in my laptop carryon bag. I like this machine so much that may take it with me despite this.

   By Challenge participant

I have 2 main complaints about the M Series. First, it seems to chase my apnea. I have often found that it often maxes out the pressure(whatever I set the pressure I set) and that high pressure often wakes me up by itself. Second, it is very noisy at the pressures I use (11-17 cm H2O) and I often have to resort to hiding the unit (often under my bed). This is with the Whisper Cap installed. Without the cap it is much worse. The software is easy to use but is strictly for reporting and does not allow for modification of machine settings. This unit travels well and fits in my carryon without disassembly.

Things I like: 1. The humidifier is made in a way that there is more water surface area for the air to pass over. This allows the humidifier to be extremely effective. 2. I liked that you can set the hose length. I have more than one hose and they are different lengths. However, they need to upgrade this one day so that there are more choices. There are only two and the longer choice isn't as long as my longer hose. 3. The footprint of the machine is combact. It fits well on my bedside table without taking up too much space. They do balance this with additional height. 4. The lack of the huge extra energy block makes this machine easier to travel with and makes the cord situation under my bedside table neater. 5. The card reader for this system is really great. Its a very small usb device and a teeny little card that fits into it. No cords hanging around on my desk like with the M series software. 6. I liked that the software allows you to make notes. I wish that the m series software did that. 7. This machine is extremely quiet. I loved this aspect. 8. While I didn't test it out, supposedly you can have this machine set up with a battery and the machine will detect power outages and automatically switch to battery. When power comes back on, it is supposed to be able to switch back to normal power. I am guessing this would allow people to sleep through black outs and such. Things I didn't like: 1. I really wish this machine had some sort of exhale relief. I had a terrible time with aerophagia when using this machine. I rarely have that problem with the M series. 2. The software gave me some trouble at first. However, once I figured out the issues, it was very easy to use. 3. The machines auto on is very sensitive. I found this good and bad. The problem was that it sometimes was so sensitive that it turned on before I was all set up and ready. 4. The software takes up a lot of computer space compared to the encore viewer. 5. lights are bright, even though they dim after some time. I usually just cover them up with a dark cloth.

   By Challenge participant

Things I like: 1. I really like the Aflex option. Having exhale relief makes this whole set up much more comfortable. This feature is particularly important to me. 2. It is easier to carry the full water tank without spilling. 3. The encore software is easy to use. Things I didn't like: 1. The extra bulky cords. They take up a lot of floor space and look bad next to the bed. They also take up extra space in the travel case making it a bit harder to pack it all up. 2. the blue lights are extremely bright. On the other hand, I just cover them with a dark cloth and its fine. Ultimately, I prefer this machine due to the Aflex/Cflex option. However, if the intellipap people put some sort of exhale relief on their machine, I would switch over to that machine in a heart beat.

SUMMARY: The InteliPAP is a little smaller and much quieter Auto-CPAP with a larger humidifier. While it does not have the advanced technology which enables the Respironcs unit to provide a superior level of breathability and comfort, I will probably use this machine most of the time because it is so quiet my wife loves it! If quiet trumps comfort at your house, this is the machine for you! EASE OF USE: This machine is easy to use, but it does not offer as much control over the functionality as the Respironics. As a control freak and a nerd, the IntelliPAP doesn't offer quite the level of satisfaction I desire for tinkering with the features. QUIETNESS: Without a doubt, this machine is noticeably much quieter than the Respironics. According to the specs, there is only ~5db difference, but my wife is much happier with the barely noticeable white noise generated by the IntelliPAP. The only complaint I have is that you will discover the noise made by your mask when air is vented from the exhaust. My Respironics was always loud enough to drown it out, but the IntelliPAP is so quiet I'm unhappy with my mask. EASE OF CLEANING: I wish the humidifier would open up like the Respironics because I am not diligent about cleaning and really like to scrub everything before I soak it. That being said, you only have one piece to clean on this unit because it does not have the rubber connectors on the humidifer. BREATHABILITY: While the ramp feature works as good as any on the IntelliPAP, it is no match for the Respironics A-Flex technology for comfort. This machine is a pretty typical CPAP and the first couple of nights I almost got up and switched back to my Respironics. I felt like I was exhaling against Hercules until I got used to it. In reality, it's just fine now that I'm used to it, but clearly I've been spoiled by the ease of breathing with the A-Flex technology. Truth me told, I would really love this machine if it only had some sort of exhale relief... HUMIDIFIER: The humidifer in this unit is more than ample to get me through a 10-12 hour session. I'm still experimenting to find the right humidity setting and I'm not sure whether it has the "sweet spot" I'm looking for. If I don't have it high enough, I dry out a little bit. If I turn it up a notch, the air seems a little too warm for my taste. APPEARANCE: This is a nice looking machine and the low-level green lighting auto-dims when you aren't messing with the settings. I really like that it takes up less space on the top of my nightstand, but I have a tall nightstand and this unit is just tall enough I pretty much have to get out of bed to see the display. EASE OF TRAVEL: I have not had to travel since I got this machine, but it seems like its shape could be an advantage when it comes to packing mask/hose/etc in the same bag. It comes with a very nice bag which easily accomodated the machine, hose and mask. SOFTWARE: The miniSD card is much better than the Respironics SmartCard if you have a computer with a built-in slot for miniSD. If you don't, they thoughtfully include a low profile USB adapter. In an act of graciousness, the software actually lets you change your machine settings. Unfortunately, the results are not quite as easy to read and I much prefer the reporting of the Respironics unit.

   By Challenge participant

SUMMARY: The Respironics is slightly larger with an undersized humidifier. It is somewhat louder, but it provides a much more comfortable breathing experience. If I were making the choice myself, I would choose this over the IntelliPAP without hesitation. If comfort trumps quiet, this is the machine for you! EASE OF USE: Both machines are easy to use, but I much prefer the knob which controls humidity on this unit. The IntelliPAP has buttons, so I have to look at the display to make changes. With the Respironics, I can easily change the settings without looking. QUIETNESS: While this machine seems quite a bit louder than the IntelliPap, but I think it may only be a little louder. I think the increase/decrease in pressure caused by the A-Flex feature makes it a more noticeable and annoying noise because it gets louder/quiter during each breath as airflow changes. While it is pretty quiet from my perspective, my wife thought it sounded like a muffled vacuum cleaner due to the constant change in the level of noise. EASE OF CLEANING: I really like the way the humidifier can be opened for cleaning. It also requires a smaller container for soaking because of its size. BREATHABILITY: From my perspective, this machine provides the most comfortable breathing experience available. The AFLEX does an excellent job of matching pressure with your natural breathing pattern and I have never felt the urge to use the ramp feature. As noted above, I do think this generates a percieved level of noise that is higher than straight CPAP mode and may be more annoying from that perspective. APPEARANCE: This is a nice looking machine and I personally like the blue lighting, but it would be nice if you could adjust or dim the light. It takes a little more room on the nightstand than the IntelliPAP, but it's shorter and I can see the display without getting up. EASE OF TRAVEL: This machine travels fine and the bag it comes with leaves a pretty tight squeeze for a hose and a good size nasal mask so I usually ended up packing those separately. HUMIDIFER: The humidifier in this unit is simply not large enough. I easily found a good setting that holds me at a comfortable level without sending me overheated air. On the downside, I cannot sleep more than 7-8 hours before this unit will run dry. SOFTWARE: The SmartCard requires a special external reader which I'm not that fond of, but it gets the job done. I really like the reporting this software generates much better than the IntelliPAP. On the down side, to use this to make machine settings changes you must have the version of the software which cannot be purchased by end users. It is only provided to DME providers and/or Doctors.

IntelliPAP is quieter IntelliPAP software is easy to understand, change and navigate. IntelliPAP's small size makes it easier to travel with and the carrying case is far superior (a minor point, but makes a big difference when you have to lug it around the airport). The intelliPAP is also more comfortable and the pressure algorithm worked more smoothly than the M Series.

M Series humidifier is easier to fill and clean.

Likes: Footprint is smaller. Much quieter. Computer interface is easier & more up to date. Uses standard SB card & automatically downloads & uploads data and settings. It can be set with the computer software. Breathing is more uniform. More compact for travel. Water lasts longer in humidifier. Dislikes: Air intake is higher so aroma products need a stand or something to be used effectively.

   By Challenge participant

Likes: Easier to print chosen reports. Intake lower for using aroma products. Dislikes: Has a "catch" in air supply near the end of intake. Large footprint. Makes more noise. Non-standard memory card requires dedicated reader.

I like the quietness, the ability to adjust the machine via the software, the foot print and the humidifier. All of these things were great. Where I struggled was on my AHI--despite every effort to adjust the machine, I could not get my AHI under 5.0. It had an annoying habit of the pressure going out of control after long periods. I would wake up to 17-18 pressures but no apneas noted. The software confirmed the extreme tail of increase for no reason. I felt like I was in a tornado. Also, the lack of a breathing matrix did not make the machine as comfortable. I think if a breathing matrix were developed and the apap adjustment were fixed, they would have a winner. Dear Intellipap--fix it and send me the new software, I love the machine. I would gladly work with you on improvements.

   By Challenge participant

I hate the humidifier and the software--both are poor designs. The software would be cast to outer darkness without James Skinner's interface. But the machine itself is extremely solid. My AHI averages 1.5. I feel rested and the ready to go every day. It travels very well and is easy to use except for the infernal humidifier. The bottom line, when you need a great machine that gives you max rest, you will pick the M Series with AFLEX.

  By Challenge participant

Like: No power brick. Good looking machine. Good carry case. Illuminated LCD display. Dislike: Although the data showed relatively low AHI, the algorithm did not seem to treat my apnea and I began to feel very poor during the day. Does not seem to be sensitive enough to respond to smaller sleep events, hypopnea & flow limitations. My data chart showed pressure stayed at 6.9 (when low set at 7) all night and rarely responded to sleep events. The machine does have the capability to adjust it's sensitivity to respond to sleep events and I may attempt to make adjustments there to make the machine work better for me in the future. I might be able to obtain therapy from the machine in this configuration by going to higher pressure than used w/ M-Series. The machine must be running to go into settings menu. While breathing was not difficult, breathing feels more natural on A-flex. Cause and effect of sleep events, pressure changes, or mask leaks is difficult to determine by data. The PDF instructions for using the data is hard to find on the CD. A link should be added to the data program to locate the user instructions.

   By Challenge participant

Like: Sensitive algorithm responds with varying pressures throughout the night, with the classic "chair" appearance on the data chart, effectively responding to my sleep events. Breathing feels very natural with A-flex. Very clear data charts clearly show cause and effect of pressure changes and sleep events, mask leaks. Dislike: Power brick. Extra hose piece that must be added when humidifier is removed.

  By Challenge participant

Liked: 1. ONE PLUG/ONE CORD!! 2. Big easy to read display. 3. Ease of seperating unit from humidifer. 4. Ease of filling humidifer. 5. Lighter, easier to travel with than the M Series, especially on an airplane. Disliked: Was a bit noisier than the M Series.

   By Challenge participant

Liked: 1. Quieter than the IntelliPAP Disliked: 1. Small, covered, hard to read display. 2. Hard to seperate unit from humidifier 3. Multiple wires, and hard to seperate unit's cord from humidier's cord. 4. Heavier than the IntelliPAP, not so easy to travel with, especially on an airplane.

  By Challenge participant

Incorporation of the power device into the unit - one piece instead of the bulky power cord on the M-Series - is a positive, but you end up with a cube size device that seems more unwieldly User screen is much easier to see-especially in the dark. My pressure setting is 13 to 20 and it seemed that this unit operated at maximum pressure most of the night - which leads me to the conclusion that it is not as sensitive to my required pressure as the m series Water reservoir seems as if it would last longer because it doesn't have rubber fittings to wear out. while the unit is quiet it does have a different sound that is not loud but perhaps more persistent - noise is not an issue with either unit I will likely use this machine for travel and the M-series at home

   By Challenge participant

Through airport security the cord and power unit end up tangled and stuffed back into the case. The tradeoff is that the M series has a lower profile and fits more conveniently into my floor stand (not as tall) and the flatter carrying case fits better under the seat if required - so I don't like the bulky power unit, but I don't like the bigger cube Intellipap - one is the offset to the other I keep a flashlight by the unit to be able to read the screen at night. Noise is not an issue with either unit Average pressure with this machine tends to be 17-19 where the Intellipap runs near 20 and seemed less sensitive In the end all differences are minimal and I would be willing to use either machine in the future

Our Comments

CPAPtalk's Product Challenge 8 is the first ever public competitive evaluation of CPAP machines done by cpap users. DeVilbiss, a focused but smaller manufacturer put their top of the line IntelliPAP AutoAdjust CPAP up against the market share leading, top of the line, and highly regarded Respironics M-Series Auto with A-Flex. After four weeks of side by side testing and a whole lot of good sleep, thirty members of the CPAPtalk community voted. Nineteen of the thirty had switched to the IntelliPAP. With an industry leading three year warranty, competitive pricing and strong patient acceptance, the DeVilbiss IntelliPAP AutoAdjust deserves to have a great market share.

Why did the little known DeVilbiss win? It is easier to use the IntelliPAP. Easier on the ear. Easier to travel with. Easier on the eye. Easier to get data from. In every major category the Respironics system rated "Above Average" but that was not enough to win.

This first machine Product Challenge is a treasure trove of patient opinions. Here are some often repeated jewels:
  1. Lights on equipment must be easily controlled by user. Sleeping in darkness is preferred. Socks covering lights is not acceptable.
  2. No power bricks. Power supply must be internal.
  3. The maximum number of power cords on a complete system is one.
  4. Near silence is best.
  5. Humidifiers need to be easy to fill and be easily adjustable by very sleepy users in the middle of the night.
  6. Ease of travel is very important
  7. Sleep quality data easily accessible
"Quiet" was a reoccurring word used to describe the IntelliPAP. The few participants that said the M Series was quieter mentioned using the optional Respironics Filter Whisper Cap with the machine.

For the eleven participants that choose the M Series Auto with A-Flex, the A-Flex technology seemed to be the feature that swayed their vote. One participant that ultimately selected the M Series over the IntelliPAP said that they would switch to the IntelliPAP "in a heart beat" if it provided some sort of exhale relief. However for nineteen participants the presence of the A-Flex technology was not enough to have them continue to use the M Series when a IntelliPAP is available.

CPAPtalk.com would like to thank DeVilbiss for their participation. They have moved CPAP development forward. Thanks also go out to all the cpap users who registered or participated in Product Challenge 8. Challenges are hard work. You have represented your fellow CPAPers with excellence. Sleep Treatment dealers, manufacturers, doctors, and sleep techs, those you serve want the best possible equipment now and in the future. Please do all you can to meet that need.
