Got my new S9 AutoSet!!

After 8 years of running on a brick, a FP 604 sleep style institutional looking over rated leaf blower, I finally got an S9 AutoSet! Love how quiet the motor is. And the menu screens. Awesome! The look overall is great! The hose feels a bit cheesy, though. The FP hose is way better. You can tell resmed absolutely took the cheapest way out with the hose. It couldn't be any cheaper even if it was made in China. Also, noticed right off that it sounds a bit like dearth vader breathing. It's actually pretty loud in that regard. But, that's the only aspect of the machine itself that I'm not happy with. Wish it didn't sound like air blowing through a hollow plastic box, even without the humidifier.
I immediately went into the clinicians menu to snoop around after my first night using it to discover they set it up wrong. And they set it up right in front of me, asking me all the questions, then dialing it in. For instance, they asked if I used or wanted ramp. I said heck no, don't want any ramp, it's just a pain in the butt. Ramp was set to on, 45 minutes, starting at 4! But, they did give me an auto, when I really didn't need one, and because I requested one, and with no push back at all. But the low pressure they had it start at was starving me of air, just like during the sleep study. If I couldn't tolerate a low start pressure of 4 during the study and didn't get to sleep until 2am after I begged the tech during the study to crank up the pressure, then why set my new AutoSet to start at 4 with a 45 minute ramp to boot? And after they asked me while setting it up? It takes a minimum of 14 to keep my airway open.
But, I'm glad I checked the setup. Over all very happy with the machine. Now that it's set correctly. Now just have to figure a way to reduce the dearth vader berating noise.

Two things:

Firstly, have you changed your mask along with the machine? I have found that some masks course different noises than others, so this may be one of the reasons for the.Darth Vader noise?

Secondly, I find that using my machine without the humidifier makes it seem very noisy. I have a different machine to you, but my thinking is that the humidifier may actually be like a silencer on the exhaust pipe on a car.

Thanks SleepyToo2. Yea, got a new mask at the same time. Hollow breathing noise is coming from the machine. Both with and without the humidifier. I leaned over the machine and took a few breaths. It sounds like air blowing through a hollow plastic box. Pretty loud, at least to me.

Islandboy: where can I get a look at a FP hose? I've used the both the Resmed and generic hose.

Not sure, Sheriff. Unless take a picture of one and post it maybe. i've never seen one pictured online, but thats been a while since I looked too.

Islandboy....are you talking about the F & P heated hose when compared to the S9 ClimateLine heated hose?
Or are you using the slimline non heated hose with the S9?
Did you use a regular non heated hose with your old machine?
I have not ever seen a non heated F & P hose to compare it with non heated hose for the other machines.

See here how I set the pressures on my S9 APAP:

If my prescribed therapeutic pressure on CPAP was 13 cm then I would start the APAP pressures on 13 cm max and 10.0 cm min. Next, I would spend a night with this setting and get a pressure graph on ResScan. The graph would show the pressure curve plus the two limit lines. Next, I would start adjusting the set-up on the APAP so that the pressure curve only "kisses" those limit lines. The reasons: I don’t want the machine to suddenly boost the pressure needlessly and give me emergent central apneas and cause me to have CompSA. Also, cause more leaks b/c of the higher pressure. As to the low pressure limit I set it so to have the machine respond more quickly to events.

Wishing you luck on your new machine and within a year you should be showing better STATS Data than my:

Heated S9 hose, compared to the FP heated hose. The FP is a little bigger, heavier, but a lot more flexible, pliable, and robust. FP Just seems like a lot more durable hose. Plus, the S9 hose has soft rubber ends, and I find it's harder to connect and much harder to disconnect from my mask. I feel like I'm gonna tear the hose apart at the point where the connector and hose come together. I have to really be careful to grab the rubber connector and only pull on that, while making sure to not put any tension on the hose part. It's a bit of a pita compared to the FP hose ends. The FP ends are hard plastic, that I could grab and twist off the elbow on the mask without fear of damaging the hose. The FP hose connector is easy on, easy off friction fit. The S9 heated hose has soft pliable rubber ends, and you have to be careful where you grab it and you have to kind of wiggle and pull, which if you are grabbing on the hose, will surely rip it.

hmmm... strange with the "breathing" noise, as I have also just started using the S9 Autoset... Im still using my old F&P 431 Full face mask and I find that the machine is seriously dead silent when Im using it.. My start off pressure is at 6, and there are times that I had to pull my mask off my face just to feel the big gush of air and noise to confirm that it is actually on... no joking.. it is that quiet for me... even the breathing feels natural for me without the sensation of air being forced in.....

Coming from the S8, this machine is awesome...

Coming from the S8, this machine is awesome...

I put my hand over the vent to feel the air (vent)...... to see if the machine is working. Also, in cpap mode, the S9 EPR defaults to medium. That gush of air (on EPR mode) gives me that "Darth Vader" sound. I tried to turn the EPR off (in cpap mode), but the machine wouldn't let me.

Try a pad a cheek liner to see if that helps with the vader sound , They are great with this mask . I find that the humidifier helps as well as the hose cozy .

I do, and have for years. Karen even special made for me a liner out of fleece instead of the lint free type of material. I use a hose cozy, hangers, and a pap-cap. Thats all been dialed in for years now.
The machine works good though, AHI is under 2 most of the time. On the FP 604 I couldnt hear the air going through the machine at all. On the S9, I can. And the tone of the sound changes with my breathing. Maybe its just me and the machine is working as designed.
