Vicks vapor Run In front of Air Intake for congestion relief

Post by DannyPh » Sun Aug 22, 2010 3:05 pm

I was thinking of Putting some Vicks Vapor rub on one of my Foam filters and Placing it in front of the Air Intake tonight fo Congestion. Has anyone ever tried this method of Vicks in front of the Air Intake for congestion Relief ? I know that the Vicks will harm the mask--hence the Idea of placing it in front of the Air Intake. Thank you

you mean you were going to set the EXTRA filter laying down in front of the intake, as a passover situation?

I surely woudnt be stuffing it next to the intake or blocking the intake in anyway, as vics is not a pourous substance

I know youre not even supposed to put a wet filter in your machine..

as a passover near the intake, might not hurt, I dont use vics so Im not really sure, but I have read about people do use other scents
in the backs near their intake I think..

here is a link to aromatherapy items which might be used with cpap, so I guess you could do the same thing with the vics if its not harmful..

Have you tried turning down your humidifier? It very often is responsible for congestion.

A fella at my support group claims to do just that every nite.
He also says he just uses tubing flared over at the ends, inserted inside his nares instead of a mask.

I have rubbed Vicks inside my nostrils where it contacts the nasal pillows with no adverse effects to the pillows.

I'm having trouble visualizing that. Does he have a Y-connection to the hose?

I think he does but I've not seen it. He does swear by it tho. I can only assume it would be very similar to the NA II.

I wonder how he handles the CO2 vent and how he knows how much vent to put in? That's what always stops me from making my own mask.

IF I can remember I'll ask next time I see him. I know he has been on cpap over 10yrs now. Maybe he exhales thru his mouth?

To be clear: He says he has a deviated septum and the inserted hose helps to keep his airway open. The vicks is to clear his congestion.

ok OK it's coming back to me now.

He makes a tube just long enuff to stick out of his nostril so it can be removed. Flares then bevels over the edge going IN. This is to keep his deviation patent. He uses a mask so old he can't get another or parts even. I forgot the name but think it was a Sullivan something?

Yea, I thought he was getting air thru it too but last we talked he cleared that up.

Hmm, that's interesting. One of the struggles I have is that my mask is constantly in my eyes. If I pull it down far enough so that it no long is in my eyes, I start to have a hard time getting air through my nose.

But I would have thought that you would flare the part of the tubing that sticks out of the nostril, to keep it from going too far in such that you can't retrieve it.

Maybe I need to look at something like this.

To the OP, sorry, I didn't mean to hijack your thread. It's always interesting what you learn here on cpaptalk.com

As a child my mom always used Metholatum and never used Vicks. My grandpa (her dad) loved his Vicks and would even get a finger full when he felt a cold coming on. I DO NOT suggest doing that just pointing out how much he loved the stuff. I would ask my mom to get the Vicks and it was a no go as the Metholatum was a little cheaper and she liked the smell better.

As soon as I got married and had my own medicine cabinet, I purchased a bottle of Vicks and always have a bottle on hand here and at work.

I have put some on a cotton ball and placed it near the intake -- but far enough away that it won't get sucked up against the intake. I love the way it smells. I don't do it nightly, but when I am congested it works.

Vicks vapor should only be used according to the limited dose that is on the label, you shouldn't have unlimited amout all night long like that
after all it is vasoconstrictor and it will cause rebound stuffiness

I have used it several times just on a piece of tissue placed behind my machine near the intake filter area. Good enough for me, and no direct inhalation. It didn't last all that long.

The tube you are referring to is called a nasopharyngeal airway. It is used by the medical profession to keep a patent airway, allowing an oxygen mask to deliver O2 to a patient that may have an obstruction. They are available from many medical supply places and come in various sizes. If you have a friendly EMT in your neighborhood, they could determine the correct size, (diameter and length), then you could possibly purchase them. This is certainly not for everyone, but if it solves a problem for someone, then it makes sense to post the information here.
This is a sample of one product available from Moore Medical.
