what is everyone's settings on ?

Post by jknsk2002 » Fri Jan 25, 2008 8:47 pm

They say I have mild sleep apnea...I'm on a 8... What is everyone else on? Im just curious....
What hapens if I deecide not to wear this a night or so while out of town, could I have a heart attack ? I know that I "shouldn't " do this & I'm going to try not to, but it may happen. I was wondering if my body gets used to it and then I skip a night , then what ?

My condition is considered severe and I use an APAP set to a range of 10-12. My titrated pressure was actually 14 but I found my AHI is better at this pressure. I don't know whether the pressure setting correlates to the severity of the apnea condition or not.

I've been on the hose for about 19 months now. In that time I've had to sleep without it two times and those were quite possibly the worst nights I've ever had, even worse than I remember from pre-PAP times. Yes, you do get accustomed to it and I find it extremely disturbing to go without.

I was told I had mild sleep apnea and I was titrated at a pressure of 7-8. However, I didn't sleep well in the lab (very little REM and no deep sleep). After using my machine on APAP, I experimented with ranges and it looked like it was tending toward 14, but then I switched to CPAP and it's working well at 11.

Mine is set high enough to hold my airway open all night. Any higher is overkill. Jim

There’s no relationship between titrated pressure and the severity of OSA.

Severity of OSA is judged on things like the number of events (apneas and hypopneas), their duration, and the degree to which they decrease the amount of oxygen in the blood.

The titrated pressure is based upon the amount of pressure which is needed to keep the airway open.

As Wayne stated, there's no relationship between the severity of apnea and a person's pressure. I also think some doctors make the mistake of looking at a person and thinking......"Oh, you're a big person.....YOU'RE going to need lots of pressure." At least I think that my doctor made that error as I've done just fine with a lot less pressure than he prescribed.

You probably had sleep apnea for a good deal of time before you were diagnosed and didn't die (I presume), but once you get "into" this therapy, you probably won't WANT to skip a night. In all honesty, I can't hardly fall asleep without my mask on and the air hitting my face.

Not to mention can cause "central" apneas... if I'm understanding correctly.

I'm still a newbie... could be wrong..

You know, when I first came here and read similar comments like that... I didn't believe it.

But, it's true. The first morning I woke up... I could just sense that I had at least had more oxygen during the night. Even though I had a lot of awakenings and was still tired during the day... I remember waking up in the morning, looking crosseyed at my mask/nose, then looking out the window and just laying there enjoying the sensation of BREATHING. Full out breathing. It's something I realized at that moment, I hadn't experienced in a long time. Even after the titration study.

Even though it was frustrating at first.... adjusting to having to wear a mask... hose management... etc...

I STILL woke up feeling like I got more air during my sleep. It's hard to describe. But, very quickly I could see that this "CPAP" stuff was for real and I was inspired to make it work.

During my titration study I was given a range of 8 to 10. After six months on 8 and not really seeing much change, I've been upped to 9 to see what happens. I occasionally sleep without it (when I crash and burn on the couch, or am so exhausted I fall asleep before I get a chance to put the mask on), but try not to. The nights I do without I can notice a bit of a difference, but not too much- but then, the therapy hasn't been working, either. So I guess if it's really working for you, you'll definitely notice the difference.

The severity of the apnoea has *nothing* to do with the pressure you require.

The severity of the sleep apnoea is judged by the number of times you stop breathing/reduce breathing. My apnoea is mod/severe at about 40 episodes an hour. Get hold of your sleep study or a summary and it will tell you how many episodes an hour you get.

When your body gets used to the therapy and you skip a night, you will probably notice the effect.

Personally I can't sleep without my apparatus as I am now awakened by my throat closing off.

Sleeping without the therapy is not good for you as it puts stress on your body. Read this, from the "yellow lightbulb" articles at the top of the page.

We are here to help you if you have any more questions about the therapy. It is important to understand it if you want the best out of it. It takes a long time to get your head around it (well, for me anyway).

Keep asking questions!

regards

My low setting is 17
My high setting is 20
My 90% value is appx. 17.6
I spend most of the night between 17 and 18. Maby 15% 19 rarely at 20.
I do not use the ramp and set cflex at 1. My AI is low now usually around 1.
I never had such a good handle on my treatment settings or effectiveness until I started participating in this forum last year.

I started on cpap over 25 years ago with a much lower pressure. I do not remember the number but I think around 5 to 8.

I do not recommend ever sleeping a night without your machine.

I've been on the hose (cpap) for about 11 months now. Was titrated at 9, but had problems in the beginning with shortness of breath during the day. Called them to talk about it, and he looked at my report and suggested I go down to 8, that he'd call the DME and I could go in and have them change it. Well, I already knew how to change it, so I did it myself. Didn't like 8, so I changed it to 8.5, and that's where I am MOST of the time now. Occasionally I bump it up to 9.

I know there's no real connection between the two, but I was diagnosed with mild to moderate.

Titrated at 12, tinkering led me to 14. Thats where I am now. No ramp.
Been at it 7 months. Love the feeling of having slept and feeling rested.
