Auto-Off doesn't turn off...what gives???
Auto-Off doesn't turn off...what gives???
As you can tell, I have an Auto Respironics C-Flex M-series machine. I've have set it so that when I take off my mask, it should go into "standby", but that doesn't happen. What gives?
It is a STUPID feature anyway, someone SMART must have disabled it on your machine reason it is not working.
The reason it is stupid is when you are a shallow breather and/or if you develop a large leak, the machine can confuse that period of shallow breathing or large leak as you removing the mask where it shuts off the machine.
Even worse if you are using a Full Face mask, you are now rebreathing your exhaled CO2 within the mask and if the mask is working properly the anti-asphixia valve should now be in by-pass mode. So the machine will never sense you have started breathing again for autostart to work so machine remains off.
How HARD can it be to press the On/Off button if you need to go take a leak?
Next thing you know you will be back here ranting that you have lost data from your magic machine.

First of all, I was merely asking a question...and I do appreciate the info you provided in your response.Snoredog wrote:It is a STUPID feature anyway, someone SMART must have disabled it on your machine reason it is not working.

To answer your quesion about how hard is it to turn the machine off to go take a leak, it is no problem at all.
As a psychotherapist, I'm having a hard time understanding your intent when you say, "Next thing you know you will be back here ranting that you have lost data from your magic machine." I frankly don't know what frame of mind you are in...you didn't leave an emoticon so I'm left hanging. Maybe you will be so kind as to respond back and clarify. Thanks!
Check your set up menu and make sure it is turned on. If it is turned on turn it off and then on again to cycle the menu. Most of us turn it off because if you get a large leak it will sometimes turn the whole machine off but if you are comfortable with it use it by all means. I used to use it but leaving it run until it cut itself off woke my spouse and when I got to reading my card I would mess with the results a bit.

I explained what gives as it relates to that feature even providing an example why it was not wise to have it enabled.
And since you were asking as if you missed it working, I then addressed a question you may have in the future by re-enabling the feature, like it may shut off for 2-3 hours during sleep no longer logging data if you have the reports, so I think I covered it about as best as anyone could.
so now which part of that do you not understand?
Since you are a psychotherapist, let me try explaining it yet another way
- someone smart probably disabled it on your machine for a reason (see example)
- that is probably not such a bad idea (gave example)
- you should probably leave it that way (again see example and reason given)
- but I knew you wouldn't be happy with those answers so
- I addressed your next question in advance as I knew you would still want to enable it.
Keep in mind those answers were meant for the non-psychotherapist type, so if you understood it, it was purely by accident. You noticed others understood it right?

You could be right. I'll just leave that to the CPAP community to decide.Snoredog wrote:you asked what gives?Dgrendahl wrote:First of all, I was merely asking a question...and I do appreciate the info you provided in your response.Snoredog wrote:It is a STUPID feature anyway, someone SMART must have disabled it on your machine reason it is not working.

Auto shut off feature
OMG. Snoredog, dude take some meds or something because when you fall from your high horse it's gonna hurt!
first of all I am asking the same question as Dgrendahl. Why doesn't my remstar M series cpap shut off when I remove my mask. The manual clearly states this will happen. I have gone into the Provider mode and set and reset the auto off to "ON", yet I can take the mask off and it will steadily blow for at least thirty seconds.
As far as you rebreathing, Mine, as well as Dgrendahl's machine has the capability to restart when you take a couple of breath's. Mine is set to start automatically and does just that. So why not stop???? If this isn't clear, picture this:
Mask is on.
You stop breathing and machine thinks you've removed mask and shuts down.
When you start to breath again the machine will AUTOMATICALLY start back up so you will NOT be re-breathing ya moron! I've been to alot of forums and posted alot of blogs and there is always, and I mean ALWAYS some smartazz like you. Most of us here just want to chat and share info. Too bad your in cyberland or else I would just love to meet you face to face.

If it helps, Dgrendahl, mine doesn't work either.
The auto start does work, which should protect me from rebreathing CO2. But it will not automatically shut off no matter which way I set it.
As for why I would like it enabled (not that it should matter), I usually keep my machine on the bottom shelf of my nightstand which makes reaching it in the dark to turn it off a pain in the neck (at least). It would be nice if it turned off as well as it turns on.

Re: Auto shut off feature
What mask? There are some (nasal) masks that WON'T shut the machine off.....because they don't create a large enough "leak".Prodago wrote:OMG. Snoredog, dude take some meds or something because when you fall from your high horse it's gonna hurt!

The "Auto on" can't be turned OFF.....it's a safety feature that'll hopefully restart the machine in the event that it DOES go off.
And, in my opinion, the "Auto off" should be turned OFF.....in case a person is a shallow breather or encounters a large leak during the night....it won't shut down and still keep giving therapy.
SOME masks, like the Ultra Mirage Full Face and probably the Hybrid, does not do well at "auto starting" the machine because the vent flow rate is higher than other masks with direct nasal seals.
With a full face mask, you also won't be "rebreathing" because they all have anti-asphyxiation valves which allows outside air into the person in the absence of pressurized air from the machine.
As far as you calling people "morons"......I guess it takes one to know one.

Dgrendahl,
Try to ignore the foul mooded posters in here. Some are so full of themselves.......... This is the reason I have stopped hanging in here. This is my first post in over 8 months, but I felt I had to step in and support you. I too, am a professional (veterinarian), and it seems to me that many of the "lay" people here love to slam any of us in the health profession every chance they get. I got blasted once a long time ago and have taken the stand that my advice and/or expertise and insights are not welcome by the peudo-know-it-alls like the ones picking on you here. You asked a valid question.... should not matter your reasons, nor should any of these puffed-up posers have answered you in that manner. It was rude at the very least. If you need any help from another PROFESSIONAL, please PM me. I will not make fun or light of any questions you may have. Please don't get the idea that there's a whole bushell of rotten apples in here just because the some of the first ones were bad........ Good Luck!

Yeah, some real jerk responses. It sure makes others want to participate. What ya gonna do snoredog when you are the only one left here? I thought the guys question was legit, no need for smartass answers. Regarding auto off, I have mine set to work but it takes a long time (20-30 seconds?) for it to actually work. Now that I have read some REASONABLE responses I believe I will set mine to not work.

Seems to me that with all the sniping that I have seen on here, the people that get hurt the most are the newbies who really need the advice of those who have been on treatment for a while.
Why ask a question, when you know that you might get a legitimate answer, but you know you will have to tolerate being treated like an idiot for asking?
This board has so much potential for helping. It is a shame that some will be chased away by a few select "holier than thous".
