There you go again...saying 400 million? Is it really that many?

That's what an employee at Respironics told a friend of mine in the business....along with at least 300 million dollars to fund the recall.
What I heard was this was just the tip of the iceberg that is being made public.
It's essentially (with a few exceptions of the high end ventilators) all the machines made and sold from around November 2009 (when first System One machine was released and replacing the M Series models) until the release of the DreamStation 2 this past April. Worldwide...I don't doubt the 400 million number over the past11 to 12 years.
Hell....just what went out with reconfigured cpap/apap machines for Covid patients was an extremely large number.

Not doubting what you were told.

But up in the chain, the telephone game someone must had mixed up the figures.

Given the figures you heard, if only 10% of machines actually go through the recall process, cost of $7.50 per machine seems low.

I don't want to use my CPAP if there's a serious problem, but also I'm terrified that I'll stop breathing and die in my sleep. This is probably an overreaction because I have anxiety and tend to jump to the worst possible outcome, but I'm scared. Some advice or reassurance would be welcome.

You are correct....4 million and not 400 million...blame it on an old woman with not so great hearing I guess especially on cell phone.

So the error was mine...I misunderstood the numbers at least on the machine count.
Not on the dollars though...that is well documented and growing and I expect it to grow even more.

The danger of not using your cpap is immediate.

The potential danger of using it, especially if you haven't used any of the so-called "cleaner" machines that create ozone is probably less. It's a decision you should make, but I'd keep using it for the time being, if it were me.

For those worried about foam bits (not the chemical bits) getting into the lungs,
wouldn't a inline AB filter temporarily address the problem?

Yeah, like, I saw in the recall article that people were having respiratory issues and that's how they knew there was a problem or something like that. Forgive me if I'm wrong, there was a lot of information to take in. But I feel fine, I haven't had any respiratory issues at all except for a bad allergy attack last month with all the pollen. So I feel like maybe I'm fine to keep using it, at least until I can call my doctor and get her professional advice/opinion?

As to the Dollars $$$ - those will grow - especially once the lawyers see how much Phillips is putting up.
TBH though...with a company as large as Phillips...this is going to be a simple write-off that the stockholders will bear, a rounding error for the accountants.
And Phillips will just jack up prices on all their other products (and they make a crap-ton of medical products among other things) to cover their costs.

So true. Phillips makes a lot more medical products than people know about and they cost a whole lot more than cpap/apap/bipap machines sell for. They can just come out with a new improved MRI and charge boat loads of money for it and make up what they don't write off.

I do wish they were more transparent though. I can't help but think there is a lot more to this than we are being told...but I guess that's pretty much the way life is nowadays. Doesn't mean I have to like it and won't bitch about it though.

What PR says is also my thoughts on this for now.
Not using cpap...a known real risk and when I weigh that with a "maybe" risk...I have to deal with the known risk first.

I would still make plans to get my machine fixed and/or a different machine though....just in case.

Until Philips releases more info, it's unlikely that your doctor will know more.
