Sore muscles and apnea

Post by jazzmynn1 » Thu Apr 23, 2009 9:58 pm

1Hi,
I want to know if anyone else experiences or has had soreness of their hands, legs, arms or other parts of their body due to sleep apnea.
If so, should it go away?

thank

Let's see .. lack of oxygen to your body .. sure, I would suspect untreated sleep apnea could lead to the problems you are describing

What's more likely is that you(?) possibly have fibromyalgia, which occasionally can accompany apnea, as can diabetes, or certain cardiac conditions. Sleep apnea itself does not have an "automatic" symptom of muscle soreness, but as part of a larger group of conditions that sometimes go along with it, something like fibromyalgia could be present. It's best, of course, to go see your MD to be sure, and the previous poster wasn't wrong in suggesting that lack of oxygen can impact almost any part of your body, so look into finding out what might be going on.

Before CPAP treatment, I would wake up with sore/stiff joints and muscles. I would also get muscle cramps in the night (usually hamstring or arch of foot). I would almost feel dehydrated/hungover.

I saw serious improvement in all of the above within the first couple weeks of good treatmeant and they've stayed away ever since.

About 2-years ago, my PCP prescribed "Antara"....a drug for the reduction of triglyceride levels. I took it for a year....until I realized that I was in "deep do-do"...My tendons were inflamed...muscles hurt.

I stopped "Antera"....and it's taken me 1-year to get over the effects.

If you are taking statins...or other drugs to reduce cholesterol or triglycerides, take a long, hard look at what you're ingesting...and check the "side effects" listed in the drug's information sheet.

Yep. Before being diagnosed and starting treatment for OSA, I had the chronic flu-like body aches and migraines. Once successful treratment had been achieved, all went away.

I was diagnosed with "almost fibromyalgia" if that is a diagnosis. Then i got CPAP and it mostly went away. Still have more aches and muscle pains and joint pains than most my age, but much, much better than before.

Some people think fibromyalgia IS a sleep disorder, btw.

I gotta saqy this forum is becoming the repository of all things apnea on the tuberwebs. I was doing a google search on this question and this thread was the first non-promotional listing.

I have been dealing with a lot of muscle soreness along with the headaches. Nothing on the order of fibro, just nagging soreness.

I am hoping my new machine (can't wait!) will help that symptom as well.

I was in A LOT of pain before I started CPAP. Doc said that I wasn't getting any deep sleep, so I wouldn't make endorphins. I'm not getting much deep sleep, now, about 1/4 what someone my age gets. . .but even that little amount has gone a long way to helping me with pain issues.

I am just completing my second week and I have to give a big ditto to this post. I could have written it myself except the cramps were in my calves and (strangely) my mid/upper back muscles. I would get up in the morning moving worse than my 90 year old mother in law!

I am seeing a huge improvement!

Have been on a statin for a long time without muscle soreness, but morning headaches and VERY stiff and sore leg muscles really ramped up about 6 months ago at the same time......hoping that initiation of cpap helps.

One and 1/2 months in. So far CPAP has resolved morning headaaches, nocturia, and daytime fatigue.

I have some pre-CPAP nerve damage that my doc and I are hoping that CPAP (and restorative deep sleep) resolves.

I'm going OK with my CPAP (three months now) in terms of adjusting to using it, and I am definitely less tired than before.

However, I have for some years suffered a range of bodily pain that is slowly increasing in terms of severity and coverage. To date, I have arthritis in most joints (mild), bursitis in my left shoulder and tendonitis in my right upper arm. Also, I have numerous muscular pains affecting most parts of my body. Oh, and I have since the age of 21 suffered back pain relating to a prolapsed disk. Now at age 57, my movement is noticeably limited and I very easily sprain a muscle. There is never a day when I am without pain, though it has not, so far, been severe enough to affect my life (other than having to sell the motorbike).

I would love to think that treating my apnea will alleviate this pain, but I'm not holding my breath.

Boom tish!

Not exactly the sort of muscle pain previously discussed, BUT...

After sleeping for a while, if I wake up and turn over, I feel surface pain for a few minutes. If I turn over again, the surface pain returns. BUT if I'm awake long enough to breathe "normally" I don't experience this pain. Moreover, when I was using the CPAP machine (had to return it -- constant fighting with the masks due to narrow nasal passages) I didn't experience this pain. Neurologist said it had to do with under-oxygenation of my blood (I've had sleep tests and oxygenation goes WAY low when I sleep), which makes sense. I'm going to have my nose reamed out and will see if this helps.

FWIW, I'm very strong but have NO muscle endurance -- if I run (or downhill ski) for 30 seconds I can barely stand up for a while. Really a bitch for a skier!

Well, you say if you're awake long enough (to breathe) you're ok, but have you considered, especially with your muscle problems outside of OSA/Cpap, that once you're awake 'long enough' your body generally has recovered somewhat from your sleeping position - something that can happen to all of us? Do you use a memory foam mattress?
