Climateline hose burst last night - only 1 month old

Post by Laurie1041 » Sat Dec 11, 2010 4:15 pm

I have been reading that there are problems with the Climateline hose so I check it carefully for any signs of damage every night before using it. It checked out fine until an hour later, I was awakened by a very loud noise and sudden deflation of my mask. The hose seems to have split open very close to the outflow port. I'll try to use some of the earlier suggestions to fix it until I can get a replacement, but it seems dicey. Last night I had to use a standard hose from a previous loaner machine and it was so rigid and uncomfortable that I could not sleep - so maybe trying a patch is not such a bad idea. To anyone who has sucessfully patched their Climateline hose, what seemed to work best?
Thanks! Laurie

There have been a lot of problems with the climate line. Resmed has a 30 day warranty on them and our regional rep is replacing them even after the 30 day period because they know there is a problem. You may talk to your local supplier or see if you can contact your regional resmed rep.

Thank you for the info. I have emailed my DME and am waiting for a response. Laurie

I'd bet duct tape would get you by until you can get a REAL hose.

This is good to know about and am wondering if it might not be prudent to get an suss hose as a back up. I have none. At least I will get some duct tape just in case.

Namaste,

This doesn't help people who already have an S9 climateline hose, but I'm gonna put in a plug for "what I'd do" if I were thinking about buying a ResMed S9 machine.

I'd buy the S9 machine -- without buying the integrated humidifier for it -- and, of course, without buying the climateline hose. Just the machine...nothing else.

At the same time, I'd buy a Fisher & Paykel HC 150 humidifier. It comes with its own connector hose to connect the F&P humidifier to any cpap/autopap/bilevel machine. I'd use the F&P humidifier with the S9 machine.

I'd also buy either the "sleepzone heated cpap tube" (often referred to here as the "Aussie heated hose") or I'd get a Repti heat cable to keep the main air hose warm -- to prevent rainout.

Besides working fine with the S9 machine, that F&P humidifier and my heated hose would work fine with any other machine I had, or got in the future. I wouldn't ever have to buy a new "integrated" humidifier if I ever decided to change machine brands.

But most of all, I wouldn't have to worry about "climateline" hose problems when using the S9 machine.

Fill the humidifier with vodka and you won't notice the leak and probably won't care, lol

My first Climateline spread in the same place without splitting--on the third night.
After the DME replaced it, I wrapped both ends with vetwrap over the heavy rubber end
and onto the hose for a couple of inches to to give it more of a transition from stiff to soft.
It's been working fine for a couple of months. Knock on wood.

I had mine split last night also after just 5 nights of use!!!! It split right at the junction at the tube/collar connection (mask end). The clear material that comprises the tube seems thinner yet harder than either my slimline or my standard hose. I was thinking, is anyone aware of a bad batch of these, or if recently produced versions have been improved. If so, is there a manufacture date or SN that we can check? I was just starting to enjoy the consistency and comfort of the climateline system.

I just purchased some F4 self-sealing silicone tape and will give that a try. I purchased another Climateline from our sponsor which I hope gets here quickly. I will have a back-up as soon as I get the replacement hose from my DME. I was afraid to try duct tape in the event it leaked and end up with duct tape that I could not remove without destroying the hose.

Excellent idea. Obviously Resmed knows there is an issue with the Climateline hose. Whether or not they are doing something about it is unknown to me at this time. My concern is whether something more insidious than a "blow-out" could occur because of manufacturing defects. After all, the hose is plugged into an electrical circuit. I will be writing to Resmed concerning my experience with their defective Climateline and letting them know that I am reporting the defect to the FDA.

My slimline lasted 2 weeks. It split where the hose connects to the rubber cuff. So the first thing I did when I received my climateline was to wrap both ends where the hose meets the rubber cuff with F4 tape. Its worked fine now for a couple of months.

I don't understand why resmed doesn't fix this problem.

He is aware of a durability problem with the S9 hoses but thinks it is not a big a problem as it is being made out to be by users. He has assurred me that ResMed is on top of this and that hoses should be available by late next week.

Resmed S9 H5is and ClimateLine Tubing - topic started by Johnny Goodman (owner of cpap.com:)
johnnygoodman wrote:Howdy All,

We received communication back from Resmed regarding the S9 ClimateLine and Humidifier. Here are the core points of their bulletin:

1. These operating conditions present no known safety issue. The S9 displaying a fault message under these conditions is not intended and is a software bug.

2. This is a software issue that causes an incorrect message to be displayed. A software upgrade is being performed on units returned for warranty repair that will prevent the "Heated Tube fault, replace tube" error from preventing system operation.

3. To cause this issue one must cause the temperature in the ClimateTube to exceed 90 deg F / 32 deg C. This temperature can only be achieved if the tube is operated under one's sheets for an extended period, the room is over 77 degrees F, or the tube is in direct sunlight while in use.

4. The error goes away each time the temperature drops below the 90 Deg threshold and reappears each time the threshhold is exceeded. If your S9 shuts down during sleep, try unplugging the unit, then powering up again. The CPAP will normally come back on until the 90 Deg threshold is again triggered.

5. Substitute a Slimline tube if the problem persists as a temporary fix.

Here is advice issued in the bulletin:

1. Make sure your humidifier tub is full at the start of therapy. A dry plate humidifier can increase the chance of exceeding temperature bounds.

2. Turn down the humidifier/climateline setting.

If you bought your unit from CPAP.com and have concerns or want a software upgrade, call us at 1-800-356-5221.

I got a call from them yesterday saying that I need to send my my humidifier too.
The guy i spoke with told me that Resmed got back to them that the "heated tube failure. replace tube." error is caused by the humidifier and replacing the hose alone will only lead to more climateline tube failures.
Has anyone heard of any type of humidifier recall from Resmed or 'am just the only one with the hose "frying" humidfier

I've been using the ClimateLine hose for six months now (unheated most of that time). Because I was aware that there was a tendency for these hoses to split near the rubber cuff, I wrapped both ends with self-fusing, heat-resistant silicone Rescue Tape before I started using it. I purchased the tape on amazon.com. No problems so far.
