Advice for European travel?

Post by photonic » Sat Aug 16, 2014 4:29 pm

Getting ready for a long European trip to multiple cities with my ASV and Oracle mask. What advice would you give me as to whether to carry an extension cord and if so, what heft and length.

I will have the right plug adapters. Any other thoughts on items to prepare for travel? Will I have trouble finding distilled water in Belgium and the Netherlands where I will be traveling?

Thanks for your experienced advice

Always carry an ext cord when traveling. I also carry a power strip for all of todays rechargeables.
About distilled - call or write ahead to ask.

I cannot speak for the REMStar machines, but I use a ResMed S9 Autoset and it doesn't require a voltage converter, only a plug adapter. The REMStar units also probably don't require a converter. I travel to China and other "less traveled" parts of the world and, even when I've lost electricity, I simply switch over to a portable battery without too much trouble. Furthermore, I was able to find distilled water in China and I know that it's also available in most European countries. If you are traveling to the smaller countries along the Adriatic coast, you might want to bring some DI water with you, but you can find it easily in most European cities, especially those in Western Europe. Bon voyage!

I always carry a 6ft extension cord. This summer, I forwarded requests for distilled water to European hotels. No trouble in Warsaw, they didn't know what it was in the Baltics. I suppose bottled water is always better than tap in a pinch.

I've traveled extensively through both Italy and France. Also have traveled a fair bit in the Caribbean and Central America. Always travel with a 10 foot extension cord. Have needed it many times - and on occasion, a 6 foot cord would NOT have been long enough!

When traveling, I never even bother asking for distilled water. I just use bottled water or potable tap water. Dump out the left-over water each morning and use fresh supply each night. When you get home, treat your humidifier tank to a 50-50 water-vinegar soak for a couple hours, followed by a wash with soapy water and a thorough rinse with water. There are too many things to carry with you when traveling. Lugging water with you, or worrying where to buy distilled when you arrive, is unnecessary.
I'm workin' on it.

Yes on extension cords, and extra universal adapters. Consider bringing an extra filter for your machine, and if your mask has little plastic clips, bring one or two of those (light weight and excellent insurance.)

I never bother with humidification when I travel, so I can't really comment on that.

I use a 110/220 extension cord http://smile.amazon.com/VCT-USP600-Univ ... nsion+cord for international travel. I only require 1 adapter (or 1 per electrical system). All of my 110/220 electronics then can plug into the cord without needing additonal adapters.

Perhaps I should amend my last post. When I said that I have found DI water in many cities in Europe, I didn't mean in the hotels. I go to one of the local markets and purchase a bottle. I sometimes travel to more remote areas of the world where DI water (let alone clean water) isn't available. During these trips, I carry a very good, portable non-chemical water purifying system with me and purify any water that goes into my humidifier (and any water that I drink). This filters out any microbes, viruses, fungi, particulate matter, etc. It's about as close as one can get to pure water.

Do share! Does thus mean you can use tap water anywhere you go? I hate finding distiller water!

Thanks in advance!

Good advice!.

My twist on this is that I've always traveled with a spare hose and mask! However, in 8 years of apap use, I've never damaged a hose or mask and I'm thinking about reducing this extra weight and volume. On future trips, I plan to leave the spare hose at home and instead, just carry a small roll of tape (to mend and holes that could develop). A spare nasal pillow mask takes up very little room and weighs next to nothing - take it along, regardless.

Also, make sure that you are carrying a spare fuse for your apap and power transformer (if that's what you are using).
I'm workin' on it.
