Hello from a newb, any pointers?

Post by vig1116 » Thu Jul 17, 2014 10:53 am

Hello all, I am about to venture into a world many of you have been in for a long time and are experts by now. I just received my resmed adapt and h5i humidifier today along with a swift fx nasal pillow. I also have a couple of other masks from the sleep studies that I can resort to if the pillows don't work out. (respironics easy life and resmed quatro air) I'm definitely not looking foreword to having to wear this every night, but i am looking foreword to not snoring, getting good sleep, and not being tired all day long.

Are there any tips/hints I should know about, either for my first night, or in general that may help me get used to this whole ordeal better?

Thank you all!

Oh, duh, I was diagnosed with severe complex sleep apnea. Apnea index of 2.3, AHI says severe- 48.1, during Stage REM AHI of 91.2 an hour. O2 desat was 82% (moderate).
I believe my resmed adapt settings are: PSmax of 15cm H2O, EEP of 9cm H2O, and PSmin of 6cm H2O. I have an idea of what all this means, but not an in depth knowledge.

Welcome to the forum.

When you have time could you add your machine to the comments section of your equipment profile so that people won't be wondering what you are using. The S9 Adapt SV is not available as a machine choice.
All you have to type is "S9 Adapt SV" and that will be sufficient. It may be the very latest model and say "Adapt SV Auto" and if it does just add the word "Auto". Main difference is the Auto has settings for a variable EPAP pressure.

We don't have a large number of ASV users here on this forum but we have enough that most likely any questions you might have can be answered.

There is software available so that you can monitor your therapy if you wish. SleepyHead (check out my signature line) will work with your machine. ResScan, ResMed's official software, also will work and if you want to try it just send me a private message. ResScan is Windows only software though. If you have a Mac there is a Mac SleepyHead version along with Windows version.

Thanks pugsy, I chose adapt from the bottom of the list, but it wasn't broadcasting it, I added it like you instructed

I'm confused by what you said about software. Is this software that i install on my comp, then plug the SD card from the adapt into the comp ant it reads it? I never heard that was possible, so i'm very interested. Are any of the softwares mac compatible? (Re-read your post and got my answer.)

Yep.
Since you asked about the Mac...SleepyHead is what you need/want.
Check out the link to Robysue's SleepyHead hints in my signature line for an in depth instruction on how to use SleepyHead. She uses a Mac so she has that covered very well.

Since you are using nasal pillow mask the only hint I might offer with it is if you are experiencing minor discomfort on the nostrils get some Lansinoh lanolin ointment (baby aisle of most stores) and use it sparingly on the nostrils before bed. If you are experiencing anything other than very minor discomfort then something is not right with the fitting of the nasal pillow mask. It shouldn't cause pain or abrasions at all when properly fitted. If you look in the mirror with it...and the first thought through your mind is "piggy nose" then you have the mask straps too tight. Most often the top strap and is a common error that nasal pillow mask users make.

I use a nasal pillow mask (been 5 years now) and have tried several models during that time. The Swift FX is a good mask for newbies.

The reason your Adapt choice from the equipment menu didn't show up is because that choice is for an older discontinued model Adapt and the links to old machines are broken. It's best to have it in your signature line like you do now.

thank you! I think i have the fit just right on the mask, ill have to fine tune it tonight in bed, but one thing i like on the adapt is, i saw if you go to the menu it shows any leaks in real time! so i can adjust in real time, i like that. Going to go install sleepyhead now.
