Trial APAP has bad odor help!

Post by Dale92 » Fri Jun 09, 2006 8:34 am

I hope I will not offend any of my fellow hoseheads who smoke because that is not my intent!

I just received my "used" APAP from my DME yesterday. I set it up and put my CL2 on and hit the buttons and gagged. It smelled like I was breathing through an ash tray. I pulled the filter off the back and it smelled like cigarette smoke so I took the filter out of my own CPAP unit and started it back up again. No difference! Would anyone have any idea how to flush the smell out of the unit? I only have it on loan for two weeks to see if it makes a difference in the effectiveness of my treatment. I am very sensitive to smoking odors so any ideas would be great!

Dale

Dale,

Call your DME and tell them about the situation you described here.
Ask (demand) a different machine.
There's no reason that you should have to put up with that.

Best wishes,

Den

Hey Den
Yeah I agree! I was going to call them in a few minutes. I thought I would wait for a couple of responses to see if there were any quick solutions. I am sure when I call I will be told that is the only APAP they have in stock and that I will have to make due or wait until they get another one in. In all fairness to my DME, they are usually pretty good about things. They are a small outfit doing business in a fairly small town of about 15,000 and have only been in business for a short while. I don't think they have a large client base yet. But like you said I shouldn't get stuck with something like that.

Dale,

If you've cleaned/changed the filter, that's about the extent of what you can do to it. Did the hose (hopefully that was NEW) come with it? If it was a "used" hose........

Anyway, hope they can get you fixed up.
Back in the early '80's, I spent a fair amount of time in Wisconsin (in the Rice Lake and Medford areas) installing banking software and have many fond memories of that state. Actually, a population of 15,000 would be HUGE compared to many of the communities I visited....
FWIW.....Medford is/was the home of Tombstone Pizza (has since been acquired by Kraft Foods)

Best wishes,

Den

I grew up in the household of a chain smoker. Nothing I hate worse than that smell. Makes me physically sick. I no of no solution. Take it back.

Final Solution for stinking machine

Post by brasshopper » Fri Jun 09, 2006 10:04 am

Wash the machine, inside and out, with Coca-cola. Not diet, the stuff with sugar.

No, it won't improve the smell, but they won't be giving the machine to anyone else either.

Tell them you read it on the Internet.

(Joke alert, joke alert.)

Actually it is probably not that funny. I would most likely never take off my mask because I would love it so much. As I have said in a prior post I LOVE COKE

The DME called me back a little while ago. I explained the situation and told her I would like a different machine because of the smell. They had another machine at the office so I am exchanging it. I think I distinctly heard a giggle or stifled laugh as I was hanging up the phone

Treat him/her with the contempt he/she deserves by ignoring them, I doubt they've ever used a machine and it's you who needs it.

The smoking story reminded me of an appalling incident I saw at a garage the other day (that's a gas station for our american readers)

An very elderly woman was sitting in the back seat of a car using a nebuliser, presumably to cope with asthma or just to help her breathe. The middle aged couple in the front seats were both smoking cigarettes with all the windows closed.

I hope my kids treat me better in my dotage.
