euipment with larger humidifier chamber
euipment with larger humidifier chamber
I am using a PR System One Remstar 60 series auto machine with heated tubing. The heated tubing improved things a whole lot for comfort. It hasn't put a dent in the running out of water problem. It happens twice a night and with no regularity. I even tried setting an alarm clock so I could refill the tank before it runs out. Now that I have tried all ways and sideways to solve the problem with no luck I am looking for a cpap that has a large capacity humidifier. Even 4 ounces of extra water could give me at least 6 hours of straight sleep. That would be wonderful! Cost is not an issue because calm sleep is a key to my health issues.
Thank you to anyone who has info out there.

We need to know what machine you are using and where you live.... arid Arizona, wet Florida?????? For starters you could take a look at cpap.com website, they have a stand alone humidifier that may have a bigger capacity than the one you are using.

Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.
Re: euipment with larger humidifier chamber
Water consumption can be affected by any of these or combinations of these
Ambient humidity where you live
Settings on the machine for humidity delivery (using a heated hose with the PR S1 setting choices are 1, 2 or 3 with 3 being 90%)
Leaks...the greater the leaks the greater the consumption
Pressures used..the greater the pressure the greater the consumption.
I max my PR S1 setting out and never have it use all the water in one night. I might get close with 8 hours of use but never had it run dry unless I simply forgot to fill it before bedtime. My pressures often go to 20 cm. Leaks are rarely large and prolonged though.
So what is your setting on the humidifier for humidity delivery?
What is your pressure setting?
How do your leaks look?
Not much we can do about ambient humidity unless we add a room humidifier to put more moisture in the air.
It is not normal to use 2 tanks of water each night during an 8 hour period.
It's not normal to use an entire tank of water in 8 hours unless there is something else going on to increase water consumption.

Re: euipment with larger humidifier chamber
My tank runs dry once in awhile-usually if I sleep late, or the room is very dry.
There have been no ill effects to tank, machine or me,
(--unless you count the unpleasant odor that tells me I'm overdue for a tank cleaning.)
My leak rate tells me my mouth leakage is minimal--so you might check your leak numbers.

Every time you've posted, people have asked you to fill out your equipment profile to provide information. YOU HAVEN'T!
Your "running out of water" problem is most likely due to your mouth falling open while you sleep and the increased airflow is blowing all the water out your mouth. Too much humidification can actually cause more nasal congestion and contribute to nasal congestion......which causes mouth-breathing or mouth-leaking.
Reading through your previous posts, I read you live in the Pacific Northwest, so it's not like you're in an arid climate.
Are you using a nasal mask or a full face mask? I'm guessing a nasal mask.

Re: euipment with larger humidifier chamber
My setting on the Remstar Auto Aflex system one heated humidifier with heated tubing is a 3. I changed it from a 2 last night because the dryness wakes me up. The pressure setting is 9.5. No significant leaks. I was just in to the medical equipment guy and he checked it all out and said I was in compliance and all was well. I don't mouth breath. If I open my mouth I wake up. Thanks for all the info. I really don't understand this and am hoping there is something that has been overlooked by the support people to solve this soon.

We STILL don't know what mask you use.NWgirl wrote:My setting on the Remstar Auto Aflex system one heated humidifier with heated tubing is a 3. Do you use software and download your data? What are your "leak rate" numbers? I've seen lots of people swear they don't mouth-leak or mouth-breathe only to find out they really DO.
Something doesn't make sense.

It helps us to better help one another by going to your user profile & filling in all your equipment:
Machine
Mask
Humidifier
And in your signature line add your prescribed pressure.
This info will then appear in blue below your post, every time you post.
Sounds to me like you have a lot of leaking going on. My hubby has always used what I felt like was too much water each night. He has been struggling with leaks too. He just got a new mask & not only did the leaks just about disappear, he is using almost no water. He has the same machine as I do & is now using the Full Life FFM, an older mask but quite effective for him, obviously.

It doesn't matter what machine the original poster is using. If you are running out of water completely that frequently, you need to have your machine checked. Either a seal is broken, or leak, or the heating element is acting up. Your DME can check for codes on the unit as well, they'll indicate if there is an issue related to that.

Re: euipment with larger humidifier chamber
The machine is not necessarily the problem. I was having the same issue with running out of water. Changing masks, and reducing my leak rate, has solved that problem. Now, I only run out of water if I sleep too long, which still happens more often than I'd like.

Upload the machine data and you'll see what the problem is.

Re: euipment with larger humidifier chamber
Your machine should not run out of water (even TWICE a night). There is something definitely wrong with your humidifier. If the medical place where you got your equipment will not repair it or they say it's ok, ask to borrow a used humidifier for a few nights and see if the borrowed humidifier runs dry. I'll bet it won't.
