CPAP & Nicotine

Post by mike512 » Wed Jan 08, 2014 9:02 am

Hi,

I just got my machine yesterday and I spent my first night on it. I was waking up every couple of hours sleeping a total of ~6 hours on then ~1.5 hours off the machine. I had big hopes for it. When I went to my CPAP titration study I was shocked when i woke up. It felt like the best night of sleep I had ever had. My first experience on my personal machine was a bit lacking by comparison. I imagine the frequent waking up last night countered any real benefit to the CPAP although I was able to drive to work without feeling drowsy. I guess I was looking for more of a dramatic impact. I use an ecigarette and have for almost 2 years. I vape usually all day and I noticed I vaped last night when I would wake up. I am going to decrease my nicotine levels on my ecigarette and titrate off nicotine over the next couple of weeks to see if I can increase the amount of time I stay asleep to see if that makes a impact on my total sleep time. Does that sound reasonable? I had a good seal throughout the night and my wife stayed up late reading. She said I put on that mask and didn't toss and turn at all. Didn't move a muscle. I suspect my nicotine addiction is causing me to wake up as well as sleep apnea. What are your thoughts?

Nicotine does indeed have a stimulating effect; as it irritates the circulatory system.
Good luck with tapering down--hopefully off.
