Test Out Different Sizes!

Post by Oddprofessor » Sun Dec 29, 2013 4:49 pm

When I had my second sleep study done, the one where they fitted me with a CPAP machine (I've seen them called "titration studies," but I've only encountered that term here, not in my doctor's office), they gave me a Wisp mask. The tech put a S/M on me, and I felt like it was pinching my nose shut, so I immediately asked for a large, which I used for the study. When I got my machine, I was given all three sizes of Wisp, but I just went straight to the large one.

Later, I experimented with the Resmed nasal pillows ("For Her"), and discovered after much frustration with the medium size that only the Large size really sealed well. So, more votes for the large.

However, I went back to the Wisp, and found that I was getting leaks unless I tightened up the headgear a lot, and that was giving me puffy eyes and lines on my cheeks in the morning, and at 61, those lines don't disappear quickly. So last night, I swapped in the S/M size. It still felt initially as if it were pinching my nose, but I loosened the headgear (a lot), adjusted the position of the mask, and found that I could avoid that feeling.

Well. I slept well, and more, I could turn on my side without having to carefully position my head to prevent leaks. The S/M mask fit much better than the large, I could sleep on either side or on my stomach without any problems. The Sleepyhead data was good, too.

So, Children, heed my tale! Try out the different sizes. Twice now, with both kinds of masks, I had to struggle to find the right fit. Just keep trying.
