Ear poblems/clear liquid (CPAP/Not)

Post by Ruinednose » Sat Dec 21, 2013 2:52 pm

I hear some common things out there related to ear issues and apnea.

I have clear liquid in my ears (NOT DISCHARGING) went to doctor cause it was making me off balance and dizzy.
I got prescribed Prednisone and amoxicilin and now i feel much better. however liquid is still there.

WHat can i do to get of this problem.

I am also on .5mg of clonazepam to take at night for insomnia and it has helped me 90%

I too am interested in this issue...

I've just went over the first 30 days on CPAP and have had ears issues. Wake up feeling like you are listeneing to things through a pillow in my right ear. Took some decongestants and it went away in about two days...but now its back. Second time in the 30 days. My concerns are getting infections if I do not deal with this issue. I aslo do not want to be on long term decongestants.

I tried lower humdity but need to keep that up to keep my nose from bleeding.

What kind of Dr did you see? If you haven't seen an ENT... see one.

Big time ear irritation problems for me, but never any discharge, which is always a bad sign. Back story: I used the Swift FX nasal pillows for about a year then started having my right ear get moderately sore (long time case of 'surfers ear'). Finally I went see my sleep doctor and he said that's a known problem with Swift FX pillows and/or any nasal pillow system. He thinks for some folks nasal pillows cause more problems than they solve (direct quote). He recommended the Wisp system because it does't inject the air directly into the sinuses (direct quote). I tried that and my right ear cleared up about 95%, with only a few twinges right after dinner from time to time. My ENT doctor gave me an Rx for Ciprodex and said take it if the pain increases; the earlier the better. Long story short, I'm now using a full face mask (FFM) and my ear problem is now about 99% over with. BTW: I'm an avid cyclist and have to plug my right ear with a piece of clean paper towel or cotton or whatever when I ride because the constant wind irritates it. I've got more info, which I've left out for brevity, so feel free to ask.

EDIT: regarding Clonazepam, I think it's a pretty heavy benzo. Here's a Wiki quote which I consider relevant. Two things to note are that it's super long lasting, so maybe residual morning drowsiness, plus one has to be aware of long term usage resulting in withdrawal nastiness. Personally, I go with Ambien or Lunestra, but only if you have to resort to them... and only for the short term. SECOND EDIT: If you decide to quit Clonazepam it is absolutely necessary to TAPER OFF GRADUALLY. SEE YOUR DOCTOR FOR THAT INFO. Here’s the Wiki quote:

Clonazepam has an unusually long elimination half-life of 18–50 hours, making it generally considered to be among the long-acting benzodiazepines. Clonazepam is a chlorinated derivative of nitrazepam[5] and therefore a chloro-nitrobenzodiazepine.[
Clonazepam has an intermediate onset of action, with a peak blood levels occurring one to four hours after oral administration. Long-term effects of benzodiazepines include tolerance, benzodiazepine dependence, and benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome, which occurs in a third of people treated with clonazepam for longer than four weeks.[7] Clonazepam is classified as a benzodiazepine.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

The reason that I say see an ENT is that I've had major ear problems since I was little... was getting to the point that I'd have an ear infection monthly or more, usually to the point that I was going deaf with them (this is with having tried multiple sets of ear tubes). I was diagnosed with mastoiditis and had to have surgery earlier this year.

I hope you can find a way to see an ENT, ear problems can be serious.
