The mask selection has to do with the generic vent rate that gets subtracted prior to the machine reporting a leak.
Doesn't have anything to do with pressure. Different mask types have different vent rates with the nasal pillow masks typically having the least vent rate.
If wrong mask is chosen at worst you don't get a totally accurate leak report.

I was under the impression that with the S8 machines that the Smart Start feature wasn't even available when full face masks are selected but maybe I am thinking of older model.
The reason why they suggest not having SmartStart turned on when using a full face mask is because the air flow is so dispersed that the machine can't always sense it and that's why you have to do a really big breathe to get it to kick in.
The sensors can't sense that you are breathing so they don't tell the machine to start blowing.
This above only pertains to S8 machines and older.

They improved the sensors on the S9 machines so using a full face mask doesn't create the same issue with the S9 machines...it's sensors are more sensitive I guess.

OK, thanks Pugsy. My new Quattro Air FFM user guide says to set the mask on Full Face for the S9. For other machines is says to select Mir Full if available, otherwise select Full Face for the mask option. If my S8 Elitte II is set on Mir Full, SmartStart is not available. I don't have a Full Face setting. There is a Standard option and if selected the SmartStart can be turned on.

That's what I thought for the S8 machine...I am pretty sure SmartStart is to be disabled for any full face mask on the S8.
The Standard choice was supposed to be used for all masks from another brand...it's the generic of all generics but was supposed to be for only nasal or nasal pillow masks...never suppose to be for full face masks of any brand. That's why the warning in the S8 manual.
SmartStart was never intended to be a function with any full face mask on those S8 and older machines.
It's too iffy in terms of the machine sensing your own breathing. If the power should go off momentarily and machine shuts off and your breathing is not forceful enough (in terms of the machine being able to sense it) then the machine might not turn back on.
SmartStart being disabled with full face masks is more of a safety feature so that the chance of re-breathing much air is limited. Of course all the full face masks have the little valve to prevent that but I guess they wanted to add another measure of safety.

OK, thanks again. Good info.
