Heated tube or dirty tank?

Post by sleepinow » Wed Dec 04, 2013 7:55 pm

Hey folks, for a while now after some use of my therapy my tube brings in air that smell terribly bad and toxic like. I was wondering why this was occuring, any ideas?

Clean them both.

If your filter is dirty it may be picking up something from the room

Hopefully you have the humidifier that you can take apart and clean. If you've never cleaned it, I bet its ugly in there....

I have cleaned my humidifier a few times and use distilled. The bad smell usually occurs later during my therapy, it is also like a burning plastic type of smell nothing rotten or old. I will try cleaning it but do not think it will do much because the smell stays for about five minutes and then goes away. I wonder if it is a malfunction of my Hybernite 2300 or something. My filters seem okay. I have cleaned the black filter and the white filter barely has any grey coloration. I also have a huge true HEPA air purifier used exclusively in that room

Does your humidifier run out of water during the night?

I have had the "burning plastic" smell occur when water level in the tank was very low or empty...had it just a couple of nights ago.
Very brief. Thought for a little while (during the wee hours of the morning) that I had forgot to fill the tank (been there done that too) but when I got up I checked the water level and while it wasn't totally dry...it wasn't far from it.
I had not forgotten to fill the tank....but I had used almost all the water in the tank. I have to do this daily. I always use a lot of water each night.

Sounds like it is running out of water - that is what mine is doing too now that it is winter and the temperatures are dropping to -28c outside at night. I had to reduce the temp on the humidifier to make it through 8 hours.

When I wake up with the "off" smell, I know I'm running low--or already have.
Since I need the full default humidity, I check my hygrometer each night, and my water jug is nearby to add if needed.

Oh nice, so it may be low water. I have cleaned everything up and last night I did not get any smell. Does the bad smell come from a dirty humidification container or from simply just running out of water. Keep in mind I never do actually run out of water. There is a few millimeters of water left in the tank when the smell does happen.

Mine also usually has a few millimetres in it but the plate is often almost bare.

Alright I guess it does have to do with the water which is very strange because the smell is actually pretty bad. I however fill my water to the line and I guess it is not enough. I love my humidification so there is no way I am lowering that. Well hopefully newer machines fix this issue
