Jaw Dropping

Post by Buddhist Sage » Wed Nov 06, 2013 11:19 am

Hello All,

I was just wondering if anyone hadsthe follow issue I have.

I've been using the Mirage Quattro Full Face mask for over a year now.
I'm purely a nose-breather, and I do not breath through my mouth under any circumstances. Not even when I'm congested, and if I am I simply add more pressure.

Point is, I'm using the fullface mask, and I'm waking up with my jaw dropped! I believe this is getting in the way of therapy. I started using a chin strap and noticed my numbers were cut in half!

Now I want to go back to using a nasal mask and a chin strap. Because I feel like no matter how hard I try, I can't get a good seal with the Fullface mask.
Yes I can get NO LEAKS on the FullFace mask, But that doesn't mean the cushion is properly inflating... there are a pair of flapss under the silicone part that touches the face to help the mask balloon properly. If I switch over to the Eson nasal mask, I won't have to worry about the mask not filling up properly because I won't have to accomadate any flaps like with the FullFace mask...

I'm hoping this puts my troubles to rest! I just want to finally benefit from CPAP on most days!

Any suggestions or experiences with Jaw Dropping with Fullface masks and remedies and or mask suggestions?

Try out the Resp care hybrid - nasal pillows, mouth covering with a chin flap to keep your mouth closed. It comes with 3 sizes of nose and mouth pillows.

I'm a mouth breather and can't use a nasal mask.... But I had a similar problem with the Quattro after 1 year of use too.... but I discovered that the jaw drop was related to the age of my headgear.

My headgear was 10 months old and had lost a lot of the elasticity that held the mask in place and sort of controlled my jaw drop. As soon as I put on new headgear, my problems with jaw drop were gone.

how old is the headgear on your mask?

I have really old headgear, but I'm not sure what difference it would make. You see when I first started CPAP therapy in May of 2012 I started out with a nasal mask. I had jaw dropping issues the too. At that time I tried a chin strap, but then gave it up cause the strap was making a wrinkle on my face. So I gave it up, and switched over to the Mirage Quattro. I shouldn't have switched over to the fullface mask I think...

But, I do have a new mask with new headgear. I'm going to try that tonight!

Hi, I have been having the same problem, I would rather use nasal pillows but getting great results with the Forma Full Face Mask Fisher & Paykel, it has a small lip that fits under your chin just enough to keep your jaw from dropping. I tried their other model the FlexiFit HC431 but it leaked into my eyes, the Forma has a foam insert that really stops the leaks. It's quiet and light. My pressures is 13. If cost is an issue, this one is around $100.00 US. Hope you find "the one"

Concerning jaw drop, have you considered a soft cervical collar.
My problems with jaw drop and leaks related to mask aging went completely away when I started using one.
They're available for about $10 on Amazon.

I doubt this has to do with mask aging. The same thing happend with my new FullFace mask even with a chin strap!
