phlegm from new climateline hose?

Hi everyone. After seven months on cpap, I'm back to ask a new question.

I finally got some replacement stuff in the mail yesterday. I asked for a climateline hose, which I have never used before, since the cold weather is approaching, and I had some problems with cold nose when I started.

I plugged it in but I woke up with all this disgusting phlegm in my throat. I have no idea what the connection could be.

Do you have any ideas of why this would happen? Do I need to go back to the regular hose?

I'm especially disappointed, because I had to take of the mask last night and I had to take it off the night before for another reason (I forget why). So now I'm pretty sleepy.

By the way, I feel bad about taking advice here, then disappearing until I need more advice. I'll try to be more active in this community, although I'm not sure what I can contribute given my short period on cpap.

I try to air out new supplies for a couple days before using them (just because I don't like the smell);
some others wash parts to remove crud from the factory in China (or wherever they make it).
This usually takes care of irritants or allergens in the plastic.

There are temperature controls to be set. You need to experiment with the settings. The heated hose changes the way your humidity is delivered. So try different settings to get what YOUR body likes. Mine likes swamps, other people prefer desserts.

So true BlackSpinner...

I'm totally happy with no heated hose and no heat on my humidifier. It's been my experience that the congestion/mucus problems seems to be worse when the cpap environment is dramatically different then the bedroom environment. Some people have gone so far as to use a room humidifier to equalize things.

Thank you so much, Chunkyfrog, Blackspinner and Jamis. Now I have a plan. I will wash out the new supplies and air them out. Then I'll play around with the humidifier settings. I'm also going to hang on to my old hose. I just took a good long nap (from 3pm to 7pm!). I switched back to the old hose. I feel much better now.

One last question. If I'm better off with the old hose, is it okay to keep using a hose that is seven months old? It looks just fine to me.

My current Climateline is about a year old.

Hi Janet,
I use my hoses that long...though they get flushed out occasionally. Drying is actually a very good disinfection measure, so what I do is to have two hoses that are active and I swap them back and forth every couple of months. Only clean filtered air and moisture from distilled water goes through them. So not to worry...

I am very lax about cleaning unless it affects leak rate.
Of course, I have always had really good immunity and heal fast. (knock on wood)
