Low Vitamin D Can Make Sleep Apnea Worse

Post by borgready » Fri Sep 20, 2013 5:20 pm

If you have sleep apnea and you don't get much sun exposure, you should take vitamin D3 or go to a tanning salon and start building a mild tan. Low vitamin D does influence the control of breathing when you go into sleep. I was getting bad apneas when I would just dose off into light sleep. I would go to long without breathing and then wake up in bad shape. I saw a post on this site and it gave a link to a series of youtube videos of this doctor giving a presentation of how she figured out that Vitamin D influences sleep apnea. It took a month or two before I could see that the Vitamin D was reducing my severity of my apneas when I would dose off into light sleep. Is my sleep apnea cured. No, but it sure is not as severe as it used to be.

Thanks for bring this up. My doctor gave me prescription for 50,000 units of vitamin D that I have to take every week. My level was 10.7 the standard range is 31.0 to 80.0.

Which reminds me I forgot to take mine this week.

I will do anything that helps.

Bill, what effect has that dose had on your D levels? What effect on your AHI? I believe you, but am curious!

If you treat the sleep apnea properly, sleep apnea wont be a problem even if you have low vitamin levels. Jim
