Still can't sleep

Post by bluedesh » Tue May 16, 2006 8:49 am

I started with a Remstar CPAP set to 8 and Mirage Swift Nasal Pillows. I kept it on 2 hours every night but couldn't breathe against the 8 and never slept once. Also the nasal pillows hurt very much.

I got the pressure reduced to 6 and could breathe against it but still couldn't fall asleep after a week. I tried 1/3 of a sleeping pill, slept for 3 hours, but woke up feeling so much worse. I think I should have felt better.

I swapped machines for a Remstar Pro 2 with C-Flex and bought a Profile Lite Gel Mask. The first few nights I hyperventilated with C-Flex set to 3. So I changed C-Flex to 1 and the next few nights I suffocated and woke up clawing at the mask to get it off. My instruction manual doesn't say how to turn C-Flex off. The gel mask also hurt my nose alot.

Today I'm having my pressure setting changed to 7. I'm just grasping at straws and really don't know what to do, other than keep trying different settings. My DME is NO help at all.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Well it sounds like you are experiencing typical problems that we all go through. I would turn the C-flex off and this has to be done through the clinicians menu. It sounds like you may have experienced an obstruction that the pressure set couldn't overcome and thus you woke up clawing at the mask. The mask hurting your nose is not doing you any good either. IMO I would get rid of the gel mask and try the activa. It is shown in my profile at the bottom of this post. An auto (APAP) may be a much better solution for you as it would adjust up pressure to overcome the obstruction. With a straight CPAP, using the ramp function you may be feeling starved for air if the ramp starts at 4cm. That should be boosted in the clinicians menu to 5 or even 6.
