Eyes Squirting

Post by Sheffey » Tue Mar 19, 2013 5:38 am

Since I turned my pressure up it is hitting 18 cm at times and several mornings I woke up with air coming out of my right eye and pushing a few tears out. Not a big problem but it seems strange and is a bit disconcerting.

I guess there is no solution for this as long as I need the high pressure?

Hi just saw you post, the air coming out the tear duct would be extremely annoying! I don't know if it could also be dangerous to the eye... but there may be something about that in these threads from others on cpaptalk...

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=70278&p=650132&hili ... ct#p650120

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=71968&p=662795&hili ... ct#p662545

Hope you will find some helpful info from the responses to these previous discussions.
Hope you can find a way to stop this from happening. For me when I was on a pressure of 20 straight cpap I felt like my ears were going to blow out, and I could not breath out comfortably. I didn't notice any air coming out my eyes, but I was getting a lot more of the 'goo' in the corners of my eyes, maybe this was related to air pressure in the tear ducts?

Could you please re evaluate your equipment list? The humidifier you have chosen was discontinued in 2007.
If your machine choice isn't showing up (we have some broken links) could you just manually add it to your comments area...see mine where I say I have 2 different brands.

Air coming out that duct isn't normal and probably related to the recent higher pressure change.
Talk to your doctor about it.

Do you think there is immediate danger of permanent damage?

I haven't seen that sleep doc in nearly a year and do need to make an appt but they general are booked up (except for urgent issues) for a few months.

The person you need to see is an ophthalmologist - a real eye doctor. It can cause problems, as any blowing into the eye can. The duct can be plugged. Your sleep doctor you just shrug and look confused.

The duct can be plugged.
Since it is blowing out of the eye, doesn't that mean the duct is open?

I hate going to doctors for little things. I already have an appt with the dermatologist to look at some sun damage.

The equipment list is tied to products that cpap.com either sells now or has sold in the past. For some reason the links to some of the older equipment are broken and that is why the choice will show up when you are looking at the menus and it appears to take but won't show up in the posts. No way to fix it and that is why we suggest just manually adding it to the comments section.

I don't know and I think an eye doctor would be the best choice or talk it over with primary care doctor. Sleep doctor won't be much help anyway.
If it is a random thing it may not mean much but I don't like to mess around with things on my own when it comes to the eyes.
There are some little plugs that can be inserted to block the escape of air if it is too annoying or if it presents a problem.
I don't know if it presents no problem or if there is an underlying possible unwanted consequence to this little issue.
Is it an emergency...no...but given it is related to the eye...I would want a pro to tell me "it's no big deal".
I see pressures up to 20 cm sometimes and I don't have any air squirting out that little duct.

If it is a problem...maybe a minor reduction in pressure is all that is needed to prevent it. Maybe just a little setting change some where and that is why I was wondering what machine you were using.

You aren't the first to mention this issue...here is one thread.
viewtopic/t67526/Air-shoots-out-eye-thr ... -cpap.html

It is probably the nasolacrimal duct
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasolacrimal_duct
Some people blow their nose and have the air come out the duct.
Google "air squirting out of nasolacrimal duct" and you will see lots of discussion about it as well as some pretty unique pictures...like someone drinking a glass of milk and having it squirt out the eye....

Yes it is too much open now but an eye doctor can plug it. Your eye sight is not a "little thing".

This has been happening in the morning when I wake up. Last night, for the first time, I woke up in the middle of the night with squirting.

It's funny how things come to you when lying there waiting to go back to sleep. I remembered that Monday I was trying some tape on my lips. Before I could put the mask on I had to sneeze. With my mouth taped up a big sneeze blew 100% through my nose. Reckon that sneeze blew the eye duct wide open? The eye squirting has certainly been worse since then.

BTW, I abandoned taping.

(I put a feeler on FB for a new eye doctor. Not too happy with the old one.)

I posted on Facebook looking for a new doctor in the big practice close to my home. I had no idea what kind of response would come.

Lo and behold I got some raving recommendations for several of the doctors. The recommendations came from far and near - people I would never have expected to reply. People who had surgery and people whose kids had surgery. Caretakers whose parents had surgery.

So many recommendations I have to winnow them down.

Based on my experience so far, if you are looking for a doctor Facebook is a great place to start.

BTW, one asked what I needed done. I just said "a minor procedure". Don't want to advertise on FB that CPAP is squirting out my eyes. Image

You guys understand, but my FB friends would have a field day with this.

Facebook can be awesome, and it can be awful.
Some times it feels like a Greek chorus of the Furies and at other times like the best of families.

Good luck with your search. I suggest that you ask all those you call if they are familiar with cpap therapy.

Since I posted that funny, maybe I should give an update. I need to get to the doc about the dry eyes and squirting. Going to select one and see if I can get an appointment after the next two weeks pass. Using some eye lubricant in the meantime.
