humidifier without water?

Post by mild6 » Mon Apr 24, 2006 9:39 pm

Hi folks. I am just wondering if anyone of you is using the humidifier without putting water in it like me? I tolerate the cold air better than I handle the rainouts. Actually, I feel pretty darn good with cool air running through my nose, especially when the summer is approaching now. However, to eliminate the noise of the machine, I still connect the hose to the humidifier. My questions are:

1) Is it OK to do so?
2) Will the machine be damaged?
3) Will it bring any negative impact on my health?

Any comments are appreciated.

I do not see any thing wrong in leaving the humidifier tank empty. One suggestion I have is to disconnect the humidifier power cord so that the heater will not accidently turn on. You can still add water in a passive mode without the heater. I never found a reason to add water to my humidifier for a long time.

You can run the humidifier without water but why would you want to Certainly you could still have the humidifier hooked into the pressurized air circuit and not have water in the tank if that is what you are asking. Even if you were to turn the heater on there should not be a problem but I just wouldn't see the point of that . I have even heard of someone placing ice cubes into the Respironics heated humidifier tank (heating circuit off) and ran it like that. The Respironics heated humidifier tank, for those not familiar with it, splits into 2 pieces just in case anyone was wondering how in heck would they fit ice cubes into the tank. I suspect the air they wanted needed to be colder for them.

1. It's fine
2. No damage to machine or health.

The only thing I see wrong with that the cold will make the bottom of the HH draw moisture and keep the heater soaked, might be harmful to HH.
