2nd Sleep Study Coming Up!

Post by need2snooze » Wed Mar 06, 2013 3:01 pm

My sleep dr. agreed that I need another sleep study to figure out why I wake up during the night. I haven't had a sleep study since my initial two, 4 1/2 years ago. I'm excited to see what this sleep study shows. Since I only get one shot at this, I want to make sure all the issues are addressed that night and I don't leave the following morning thinking, "Oh, I wish I had thought to ask about this, or have them watch out for this, or etc...". I know they will be monitoring my legs for PLMD, again, and of course, all the other stuff they normally do. I will be using my CPAP machine, too. Anything else I should ask about?

Hi,

You probably want to make sure you know exactly what they are going to do. For example, make sure that they are going to have you do CPAP. On my last study, I was hoping for a new titration, but since I wasn't having actual OSA events (they were RERA events), the RT never let me use CPAP since I wasn't meeting the insurance company criteria (even though I already own my own machines). It is pretty hard to get a titration without using the machine. Just make sure you are getting exactly what you need.

Policy of the lab will have much influence on how the tech will perform the PSG. Ask about the following; 1. if the tech will take you off the cpap to re-access your AHI; 2. if so, what AHI is the minimum to be placed back on cpap and re-titrated; 3. you did not mentions any O-2 supplementation...so ask if you will be off the O-2 for a period of time; 4. ask if you can bring your own mask; 5. ask about bringing your own personal sleep aids like meds, fans, pillows and blankets; 6. be honest with the tech about any changes from your first PSG like meds, weight loss/gain, neck size changes, stresses and mask preferences.

Also note that there are some NEW (sic) leads that will be placed on your person....maybe the chin, nasal and head...so expect more leads to contend with.

Thanks for the help. I just got a call from the sleep lab, expecting to be scheduled in the next few weeks. They said they had an opening tonight! Also found out that my dr. requested a baseline study -NO CPAP! Thank goodness it's a Friday night and I don't have much planned for tomorrow, since I will probably want to take a nap.
