Vinegar smell

Post by Jkeith » Tue Oct 02, 2012 5:05 pm

Apparently my 4:1 ratio was not too accurate, to say the least heh. The silicone that seals my humidifier tank still smells like vinegar. I've washed it a few times with baby shampoo. It still has a very light smell. Will the dissipate on its own and is it fine to just go ahead and use?

Vinegar is harmless, except to microbes.
If the smell bothers you, eat a pickle before bed--you'll never notice it.
Hubby loves sardines; I always have one so I can stand his breath.

Seriously, though, if you soak it in water with a couple of teaspoons bicarbonate of soda, it will suck most of the smell out.

I don't like the smell of vinegar at all. Took me only a couple of times of doing the vinegar cleaning thing and having to put up with the smell to figure out that wasn't going to be in my routine.
It won't hurt you but it sure does smell and it took lots and lots of washings to get the odor out.

Get the dishwashable tank and dishwash it.

It also helps to have a spare tank and let the just cleaned one sit and air out and dry between washing.

If you have the non-openable tank, you can actually open that one for cleaning, too.

I wonder if the seal is silicone.
Maybe it could be soaked several hours in hot water and baking soda?

Plain soap solutions are better at cleaning these plastic and vinyl surfaces and after rinsing leave no odor. I think vinegar should be reserved for pickles.

Archangle, how do you open this one? I'm afraid I'll break it if I force it. But seriously, what was ResMed thinking by not makign this take capable of being opened so it could be cleaned thoroughly. I guess it was so they could then make you turn around and buy this: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... amber.html ????

Yes. Business books will tell you that the quicker a client is forced to buy a replacement the better it is for your business, consumables is what they are called. I will bet the guy who designed that humidifier got a bonus for making it almost uncleanable with its indents and ridges.
This is why I don't understand the DME attitudes, they have the perfect consumables business, a slight change in attitude towards your customer and you have him by the short hairs for life. The customer actually spends more on accessories then on the cpap machines.

I understand the newer ResMed S9 "non dishwashable" tanks are openable.

They are.

I got both tanks in January 2012 & the so-called "disposable" tank does come apart, but only into 2 pieces. It has latches just like the dishwasher safe model. The gasket is on the top piece.

ResMed does not certify any part of that disposable tank to be dishwasher safe.
But, I wonder why the aluminum water tub could not be put in the dishwasher. I have never tried that, but will when the disposable tank is nearing the end of its useful life.

Most automatic dishwasher detergents tend to pit aluminum pans due to a chemical reaction.
Most aluminum utensils should be hand washed.
The aluminum ResMed tank is quite thin and the reaction would probably drill right through in a few cycles.
