CMS 50F Oxmimeter

Post by lcook7281 » Tue Apr 17, 2012 7:33 pm

I have been using the CMS 50-oxmimeter for about a month now. For a two fold reason. 1. To see what my oxygen level was during the night as I was tapering off of prednisone, and now more recently to monitor my progress with my cpap.

Question: My fingers feel like they are getting burned. I try to rotate through the ring, index and middle fingers on both hands, but certain fingers give me better data during the night. I have found a wrap-around probe that I am going to try, has anyone experienced this sensation, has anyone tried the wraparound probe?

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

Lisa

Yes, Lisa... my CMS 50E gives me a burning sensation and leaves a red mark on my finger and I too rotate around fingers on both hands and yes, some fingers give different data than others, a little. You are not alone. Also it might have been disturbing my sleep a little when wearing it. I, like others here, now use my pulse ox on occasional nights, I no longer use it each night.

That's surprising to hear. I'm using th 50F also. Can you post a picture of your finger sensor? I'm not having those soreness problems unless I use the same finger for a whole week, and then it's only minor like maybe a slightly sore cuticle. Never experienced redness or any burning sensations.

What are you seeing, Lisa, so far as desaturation lows over time as you wean down on prednisone. I'm doing the same.

Here is a picture of the current set up.

The only difference is I bought a velcro watch band because their Weiss vand is too big for my small wrist.

I am considering the wrap around probe like the one on this page.

I finally got off the prednisone after four months. I was not allowed to taper If I could not keep my o2 above 93 and preferably closer to 93. My doc finally let the tapering continue as long as I stayed above 90. I still stay between 93 and 95 for much of the night.

You might find out if that probe will work with the CMS 50F. I have the CMS 50F, and my mom hated the finger probe which came with it. I asked about using another one with it, and was told that the one which came with it was the only one which fit it.

Lisa, that looks interesting. I have considered shaving down the thick sides of the probe. I didn't know the new one was available. Looks like a long cord though, that's already an issue. I guess it might be long enough to wrap around your wrist. Might be better...
I've been wearing my 50F unit over my fingers so I can push the button to check the reading with the same hand. My fingers through the wristband, if that makes sense. The display is upside down, but it's easier than having to use the other hand and screw up the reading.
I do get some irritation just above my fingernail if I wear it all the time.

Kiralynx, I plan on calling in the morning. I will let you know what I find out. Otherwise I will be trying to find another option. There are times my docs want nightly data on my o2 because of my asthma and compromised immune system. I guess if it. Becomes a real issue I will try to get the insurance to pay for the resmed oximeter and see if it comes with different probes.

I contacted the cooper medical today and was discouraged on the wrap around sensor. It apparently is very unreliable. He is going to look into finding me another sensor that will work for me. I will keep everyone posted.

What was your doctor's concern about weaning off of prednisone and your oxygen saturation levels? None of my docs has said boo about oxygen levels in connection with use of prednisone or weaning off of it. Yours may know something that mine don't.
Thanks.

When I get sick I usually crash pretty fast. The common cold turns ugly overnight.

I got H1N1 two years ago and spent a week in the hospital after being misdiagnosed for a month. It really wasn't anyone's fault because I didn't act that sick and I didn't believe I was that sick until we found out that my case of asthma was h1n1, web pneumonia that was staph based and a fungus infection. My lungs are still pretty trashed from it all.

I had sinus surgery a few years ago and spent a couple of weeks on o2 because of it and that might be why my eoc is extra cautious with me.

I tend to not be your typical patient. Usually giving her one symptom of what is wrong and making her figure it out.

The instructions for the non-clones say "Do not use for more than 2 hours at time" or some such thing. I expect that the clamping force could cause a loss of circulation that could case problems.

I've got some Nonin gear that works with the resmed s9 and the sensors are taped over a finger and not clamped. This seem to be a standard monitoring product for them (8000JFW) and I'm guessing there is a reason they developed it.

I think I must have the cms50e ... It has the clamshell finger piece. I haven't had any problems with discomfort with this one.
