Hello,
I am not sure I understand enough to ask an intelligent question, but here it goes.
I have a ResMed VPAP S. I am looking to buy a back up machine. How do I know what features I need in a back up machine to get the correct therapy? I know know the VPAP S is a little specialized but I am not sure what it has that I need. I am not even certain if it is set up in CPAP or BiPap or auto mode? (told you I don't know much )
How do I go about finding the answers to these questions? I bought a ResScan reader to read the card but I am still trying to get familiar with that.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Re: Question about buying a back up machine
F3,
Well I would say you need an S9 VPAP S as B/U if you want the same features.
Just teasing. Call your DME where you got the machine and ask what the settings are. It is possible to go into the clinician menu and find out...but there's always the risk of hitting the wrong button. But if you want to try...we could probably find a link for that manual somewhere around here.
Are you at a really high pressure? That machine has a max of 25cmH2O which is 5 higher then most xpaps.
I'm mainly a Respironics guy and while they aren't exactly the same, a Remstar BiPap ST is very similar. That's what I have and I got mine used off Craigslist. Your machine has a backup rate set at a fixed 10 bpm.
Answer this. Are you going to go all out and buy a new machine? Or are you going to look on the used market. Budget makes a difference.
Do you need a data capable machine? Are you checking your data now? If you aren't...you could probably find a good useable machine for under $200 but it won't be the newest.
Cheers,
Jamis

I am definitely not going new. I was barely able to afford the first machine! I would like to find something in the <$200 range. My pressure I think is 17 on the inhale and 16 on the exhale. Data would be nice, but not necessary. If the back up was compatible with sleepy head, I would consider making that the primary machine if it was capable of the correct therapy.
Thanks for the reply!

Re: Question about buying a back up machine
F3,
Realistically, you aren't going to get the same machine for $200. But I'll bet you could find an older vpap ST for that price. I suggest you stick with the same brand. If you live in a big city...or near one, start perusing Craigslist. I'll look around and find some older machines that will do the same thing...just so you can get an idea of what's available.
Secondwindcpap sells good used machines but I can tell you...something similar is going to be over $1000.

Re: Question about buying a back up machine
Sheesh...
Not much available and prices higher then I thought.
For a Resmed Machine that will do what your machine does...only limited data.
S7 Resmed VPAP III ST or S7 Resmed VPAP Adapt SV (can be dumbed down)
S8 resmed VPAP ST
You should be able to find the S8 for less then $500 The S7s less so. Cheapest one on Secondwindcpap was $599 Google them and go visit there website.

Re: Question about buying a back up machine
Thanks J,
Since my primary machine is working good I can sit back and watch Craigslist and secondwind and hopefully score a sweet deal.
I think in the mean time, I will commit to learning a little more about my machine and its set up. I got into the clinical menu this morning and saw that it is on SPONT mode.
thanks again for your replying!
