Which Tube to buy? ClimateLine?

Hello forum,

I use a Resmed S9 Elite with humidifier and a Mirage FX nasal mask.
I have been using my ClimateLine tube for almost a year now and only today did I notice some leakage near the connection point with humidifier. I am thinking about getting another ClimateLine tube. But, before that, I wanted to check with this forum and see if there were any better tubes out there that I should buy, which would be compatible with my device and mask.

Some people wrap the ends in silicone tape to support the hose where it comes out of the rubber cuff.
We use vetwrap (the stuff that's wrapped around horses' legs when they perform in races or dressage.)
Just at the ends and an inch or so onto the tubing.
There is some talk that Resmed may have improved the quality of the hose, but I don't know for sure.
A year is actually pretty good for this hose. Our hosts sell it for a good price.

Resmed recommends replacing any tubing (including ClimateLine) after 6 months of use. No matter how good you think you are at cleaning and disinfecting there can be bacteria buildup in the crevices, etc. And the ClimateLine can't be left submerged like other tubing.

Some members here have bragged about using the same tubing for years. You can do that if you like, but I prefer to err on the side of caution.

And of course Resmed wants to sell as many as they can. I've used my climateline for 6 months now and its in great condition. I don't intend to change mine until its broke. I soak mine once a week for an hour in water with baby shampoo, then rinse. If you look at cpap.com website for the resmed climate line, in the IMPORTANT TIPS tab of the webpage states "The hose can be submerged in water but needs to be completely dry before connecting to a machine.

Why is it necessary to wash the Climateline hose? There's a constant pressure of filtered air traveling toward your mask continuously, and exhaled air exits through the vents, doesn't it? It doesn't seem to me that exhaled air would make its way back toward the machine. Not being difficult, I just don't know. How dirty could it be? What about the interior of the machine? It's doubtful that it ever gets cleaned. I guess I am just nasty. I've not washed a hose in several years, just replaced them every six months to a year. What's the difference between breathing through a cpap and breathing air in a humidified room with no cpap?

I am not a scientist, but the inside of a hose with moist heated air coming through it (especially ClimateLine) can be an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. Even if those bacteria don't come from your mask exhalation but rather from air drawn from the room through a filter that can be dirty if you don't replace it frequently. The interior walls of the tubing remain warm and moist for hours at a time... you get the picture.

Since I'm not sick from it, perhaps it's nourishment. Not all bacteria is bad.

Well said. Depending on your immune system, you may have a higher tolerance for bacteria, and dirt.

Since I can hand wash it and soak it in my Control III disinfectant (weak solution); as long as I get it COMPLETELY dry
before plugging it back in, I might be able to make this puppy last another 16 months--or not.
I already bought its replacement. The old one could become the back-up or travel unit.

Been using the same Climateline for around 18 months. Never cleaned it. No problems.

Alternate hose choices:

Any unheated CPAP hose should work, but of course, you won't get the benefit of a heated hose. The big benefit of climateline is preventing water from condensing in the tube. Try a non-heated hose. If you don't get "rainout", and the slightly less warm air doesn't bother you, save the money.

Cleaning:

When you exhale, cough, sneeze, etc. some of the air you exhale goes up the tube because you exhale faster than the vent holes let air escape. There may be some material from your body that can collect and serve as nutrients for germs. Even with the air filters, there is still some amount of dust and other materials in the airstream.

I'm not really that concerned about it, but it's easy enough to run hot water from the kitchen faucet through the tube when I do my weekly cleaning.

Within the last 6 months Resmed redesigned their climate line tube. It is now made of a thicker material. My latest one is that kind and seems to be lasting longer and hasn't developed any leaks. I have been using it for 6 months.
