I wonder if humans have apnea and most animals don't because our head rotated forward when we stood upright and we have a right angle bend in our airway that most mammals don't. Most mammal airways are a lot straighter than ours.
I wonder if you would reduce your apnea if you could sleep with your head tilted all the way back.

Re: Does a pillow make a difference?
+1 for the Sobakawa pillow. I've had neck and shoulder pain in the past and used a Tempurpedic contoured neck pillow for years but still would often wake up with a stiff neck. I read about the Sobakawa in the forums and saw it at B, B & B and figured at $20 less the 20% off coupon, it was worth a try. First night I wasn't particularly fond of it. But tried it again the next night and ever since, it's my favorite pillow as I don't have any neck pain at all anymore. It works great with a CPAP mask too. If you sleep on your back, it's contoured to cradle your neck. If you're a side sleeper, either end of the pillow is firm enough that you can sleep on the edge of the pillow without the mask hitting it.
