success! mouth sealing tape etc
success! mouth sealing tape etc
Switched to my nasal mask last night with tape. I tried the chin strap at first, but literally the second I'd fall asleep my mouth popped open and I woke up again. After this happened three times I went and got the tape. The only bad thing about using tape is it irritates my skin. I've used the blue masking tape, like painters use. It's the least adhesive tape I know of, and sometimes I have to replace it in the night because my mouth has made it moist.
Now I try to curl my lips a bit before putting it on and that helps. But anyway, I was at the store today and bought some of those denture strips. I thought maybe that could seal my lips shut without using tape. Will it irritate my skin on my lips though? will there be any problem in opening my mouth quickly?
Sometimes my nose gets plugged up and I want to open my mouth to breath. They don't seem long enough either, which is annoying, I'll have to use two of them. I always wake up in the night with my cheeks puffed out, so it needs to seal the entire lip or the mask will be useless.

I had no skin irritation when I used the strips but then the blue tape wasn't a problem for me.nobody wrote:Will it irritate my skin on my lips though? will there be any problem in opening my mouth quickly?
It is easy to break the seal with minor mouth movement. Not difficult at all. A little yawn will do it.
Yes, length is not quite enough and I think most people used 2 to get the length.
I never really had the puffy cheek thing because that is more related to the tongue placement blocking air from the airway from sneaking into the oral cavity.

Nobody
You may want to try this. (all tips found here on the forum)
It works good for me.
A thin layer ofLaseline or Petroleum Jelly on lips.
Then a thin layer of Milk of Magnesia on lips
Let that dry.
Cut tap about 5" long and fold each side under to make tabs so you can easily remove.
Lay down and close lips then put on the tape. ( If I put the tape on standing up when I lay down it "feels different" as in not as comfortable.)
In the A.M. roll the tape onto it's self slowly starting at one end.
Hope this helps.

I went this far, so I might as well "go all the way"
After doing the above I put on my Respironics Chinstrap
https://www.cpap.com/productpage/respir ... white.html
and barrette it to the top of my head with 4 small barretts to keep it stable.
Then put my nasal mask over that.
Nothing is leaking....how can it?
I look a mess but have good numbers.
P.S. I use blue painters tape that says Scotch Blue written in gold all over it and it's 1 1/2" wide

Re: success! mouth sealing tape etc
For 11 nights, I used two-inch paper tape with a smear of lanolin on my lips. Then, reviewing my data,I had a 37 second clear airway apnea, with NO tidal volume---looked like an obstructive apnea without the ability to mouth breathe. I vaguely recall a struggle, but I sleep so deeply without ever using meds/alcohol. So last night, without tape, I snored a bit, but no CA and the apneas were short (10-13). The verdict for me, is taping might be dangerous with my severe OSA.

So does the tape still stick with all that gel and stuff on your lips? I don't think barrettes would work for me, don't have enough hair for it. Oh and speaking of hair, it's a good idea to shave your mustache before taping. As for taping being dangerous, I really don't think so. I sometimes have trouble with a plugged nose/sinuses but it wakes me up when I can't breathe then I can take the tape off. Yet another thing disturbing my sleep, but what can I do

Re: success! mouth sealing tape etc
Isn't there any type of glue..... or sticky gel, maybe in like a lipstick dispenser? You apply to both lips, let it get tacky, close lips, mouth sealed! Water soluble. You wake, rub mouth/lips with wet washcloth, open mouth. No sores, no tape! I have been on cpap since Oct 2017. Love it! It has saved my life. Have dropped 60 lbs without even trying. I have energy again. Appetite back to normal. I have occasional mouth leak, was just searching around here for a possible solution. I have resmed autoset air sense 10 & p10 nasal pillows . Nightly score rarely below 95, several nights a week at 100. Occasionally lose a few points from excess mouth leak. I want 100 every night!
I resisted cpap & refused to use it for over 5 years. I am convinced that my ENT saved my life. I was addicted to Afrin nasal spray, always had trouble with sinuses, constant nasal infections, couldn't breathe out of nose, AT ALL! Because of the no nose breathing I was forced to use full face. Just could not tolerate it! Highest pressure setting. It would ramp up and 45 minutes in, it's blowing so hard my lips are flapping inside the mask like I jumped out of a plane on a skydive. Ridiculous! Not able to breathe properly out of nose made everything very difficult, sleeping, eating, everything. Every doctor just said "quit using the Afrin".... Well, Gee thanks! Here's your $50 copay! Dr Gould St Louis MO invented (I believe) the nasal Ballon rhinoplasty procedure. Outpatient 2 hour procedure. They stick balloons into sinuses, inflate, airway open. And I mean OPEN! He did that prosudure to me, got me on cpap (nasal pillows with lower setting instead of full race blast), twice daily nasal wash with budesonide. My nose is clear as a bell 24/7! And no Afrin! That stuff is the devil! Woke up first day on cpap working correctly, the haze I was living my life in that surrounded me every waking minute.... was gone! I said to my wife, "OMG, I haven't slept like that in 6 years!" I have never looked back. Use it every night without fail, I look forward to going to bed & putting on that mask because I know I'm going to feel great in the morning!
So, back to my glue lipstick idea? Is there anything out there like that? Or do I run to the patent office tomorrow morning?

Re: success! mouth sealing tape etc
If the power goes off during the night and you couldn't easily open your mouth, you could be in trouble.

Can't see any form of lip glue being safe.
