OT: Insomnia sites?

Post by turbosnore » Sat Nov 12, 2011 5:37 am

Does anybody know any good websites about insomnia?
Either medical info about diagnoses/treatments or a site like this, but about insomnia rather than CPAPs?

I'm trying to find out about chronic insomnia (> 10 years):
What type of insomnia it could be, the mechanism and possible cures.

How about the National Sleep Foundation http://www.sleepfoundation.org . They've got some info on insomnia. Hope you find the help you need

Absolutely the best site I know about is listed below. It's an online course and there's no cost. Aimed at therapists, but the info can certainly be used by people experiencing insomnia. However, if you are looking primarily for the use of meds, this probably isn't the site for you--at least at this time.

Caveat: I don't recall if it spends enough time exploring the role of food sensitivities or experimenting with supporting use of light therapy, two things that are often overlooked, in my professional and personal opinion.

Best wishes for your efforts!

"Assessing and Treating Insomnia, my online course where I'll present research and an evidence base -- and try to help you learn to actually help patients with insomnia.

Who is this Course For?

We use a systematic, research-based approach to insomnia that relies on natural biological processes instead of drugs, hypnotics, or psychotherapy — and is extremely effective.

We designed this self-paced online course to help psychologists, family therapists, clinical social workers, and counselors develop and demonstrate a specific set of competencies focused on helping clients with insomnia using our methods.

It is for people who want to learn how to treat insomnia, not just learn about insomnia. We are trying to make it a skill-centered course, with plenty of evidence-based research and the most widely-used assessment instruments all presented."

Thanks a heap to you both!

Now I seem to be getting somewhere. Those links are just something that I've been looking for.
Most pages just tell how to find out if you have sleeping problems (as if you could NOT notice)
and that if you have sleeping problems, go to a good doctor. (I have some experience of sleep
doctors when it comes to sleep apnea - you probably guess what kind of experience...)

The doctor might be a good idea, but it would really be good to have some kind of understanding
to tell a good doctor from a quack.

My aim is to not dig into chemical possibilities, but find out what kind of insomnia is in question, and
what can be done to it.
