1st Nights Sleep with My CPAP Machine

I had my first nights sleep with my machine. I haven't accessed any data yet. Went well. Slept very well. One thing i noticed is when i would inhale it seemed to make a light whistle sound. Not just airflow. Nothing on exhale. I think i can feel when the nasal mask leaks, moved it around a bit before sleep. Didn't seem to wake my wife so it may not have been that loud. I got up one during the night to use restroom.

Anyone else experienced this? If so whats causing this? Or is this normal.

Only data i can get at this time off the machine ( hadnt downloaded software yet) is ther were no large leaks and my AHI was 1.6.

AHI of 1.6 is great right out of the box!

Each machine is different and some of us are more sensitive to certain noise frequencies. I am aware sometimes of the noise my machine makes (even though I think it's barely audible) just before I go to sleep, but if I wake up for any reason during the night, I can't hear it.

If it's a whistle that comes and goes, perhaps it's not normal, but if it's consistent it may just be the normal sound of the machine. You can check the air filter in the back (to make sure there is one) and adjust it's position if it doesn't seem to be in there correctly.

Don't worry about the whistle.. it's normal. Most masks will vent air to remove the carbon monoxide (or dioxide... I can't remember which) we exhale when breathing. It's called the venturi effect. Your mask has to get rid of your exhale.

Thank you for the information. Its not real loud and it would only happen when i inhaled not exhaled. Other than that it was great no issues, no leaks i knew of.

The inhale noise is normal. I hear it also. I have tried to figure out what it is by changing various things like Flex settings and putting the machine on a towel and even plugging my ears. I hear it but when I ask my husband if he hears any sounds...his reply "What sounds?" Even with my fingers in my ears I hear it which leads me to believe it is something "in our head" more than anything else. It is real and not imaginary but has something to do with us hearing our own inhalations with the mask from within our head as opposed to the sound being external that another person in the room can hear.

Funny thing...you won't notice it when you first wake up until you make a conscious effort to listen. So it is normal and you will get accustomed to it. When I used the Swift LT mask instead of the Swift FX I now use, I thought the inhale noise was louder...so mask type may have some impact on it also.

It won't go away. It will be there when you inhale but once you get used to it, it won't seem so noticeable. Mainly because you no longer will think about it as being a foreign sound.

I went in to purchase a face mask in addition to the nasal mask. I have a respitory theropist there at the DME. SHe checked it out and it was the white filter that sits behind the grey filter. Took it out and the sound stopped. She gave me more grey filters and said to change them as needed.

Maybe your sound was different from mine. I tried removing the white fine filter and it didn't help. Also tried no filter because someone said that worked for them. Go figure. Maybe my noise is more mask inhalation noise or something.

Well we both eliminated the noise. I cant tell you how better ive felt today after just one night. No mid afternoon crash as usual. I cant wait to sleep tonight. I never knew my body was lacking the right sleep.

I did just now go try removing the white filter again...Alas..I still hear myself inhale. Not that it is a problem. It is really a very gentle relaxing sound. It's possible your noise was different or our ears perceive it differently. Doesn't matter though, you solved your problem and I don't really have an issue with the faint noise I hear.

I would for sure wash those foam filters pretty regularly though. I see how nasty and dark those white filters get and I always wash the foam when I change the fine filter.

I sure will and i have extra white ones. I might try replacing it and seeing if it still happens. If so ill stick with the other but wash and replace more frequenty. I thank you very much for your guidence to me . Me learning to deal with this new issue in my life hasnt been easy. But God will not put more me than i can handle. Ive learned so much by information provided by you and others that guide me and provide productive answers. Makes it alot easier for me to deal with it and have it under control.
