Best Cpap Machine to Order

I'm looking a 2 different Cpaps. PLease tell me which one is a better machine in your opinion.

S-9 Elite by Resmed

Respornics One rem Star pro.

Co workers i know have both kinds. Both gentlemen love each one. I will be deciding on what to tell the Doctor this week. He told me he prefers the Respornics because it will allow him to retrieve more data than the S-9 by Resmed. I've looked them both up and both seem to provide the same data.

You will probably get the same responses here. I love my S9 autoset. There is a recent thread around here comparing them. Why not got for an apap?

They both discuss autos but the differences are pretty much the same.

You are right, both provide the same data.

However, the S9 Elite offers onscreen daily data that you can look at every morning on the little screen: AHI, leak rate, hours used, etc. You can view this data for 1 day (the previous night), 7 days, 30 days, 3 months, 6 months, & 1 yr averages.

The Respironics will show you 7 or 30 day averages onscreen but that it is it, as far as I know (a Respironics user will likely confirm or refute this). To see the previous night's info you have to remove the card and read it on the computer w/your software.

But quality-wise I would say the machines are the same.

One thing that I like about the S9 is that it has a slightly slimmer profile and when you put it in its travel case, it's like a thicker laptop bag and carries easily on the shoulder. Whereas the Respironics is a bulkier, squarer travel bag (I've had both).

I would go with the S9 Autoset. You can download the software free.

The Respironics requires you to buy a copy of the software.

Either one would serve you well. Not many of us has had a chance to use the 2 different brands to compare them so all we can offer is usually our thoughts about the machine we have. Back when I first started therapy the Respironics machines offered a couple of minor things in data that the ResMed machine did not offer but now with the new technology things have pretty much evened out. The ResMed machines do offer more useful data on the LCD screen than the Repironics machines. That has always been the case but with easily available software that has become a non issue. I suspect your doctor is used to the Respironics software. Maybe he is thinking about the older technology machines when he says he gets more data.

I also suggest the APAP model if at all possible. It can be used in straight cpap mode if needed, so like 2 machines in one. There are some situations where APAP can be useful.

There are some minor differences in algorithms and exhale relief with the 2 brands and there may be a few people who feel better with one brand over another but since most of us don't get the luxury of using both we can't really say if one is "better" than the other. I do like the heated hose option that the ResMed has which Respironics doesn't though rumor control says Respironics is working on one. That is probably the main thing I find lacking with my PR S1 machine. I like lots of humidity and a cold bedroom and those 2 combinations will pretty much guarantee rain out in the winter time. Though there are ways for me to even deal with that annoyance fairly easily.

Regarding software for Respironics...SleepyHead works with both Respironics and ResMed machines.. it is free.
Encore Pro can be found easily for free on the web and Encore Viewer is the patient version and it can also be found for free or purchased if someone wants to.

When they say why not go for an Auto, they are referring to the S9 Autoset, or this Philips Respironics machine.

While you might not need an auto right now, some months in the future things in your breathing may have changed, and having an auto becomes a great way to find the right titration again. Sleep studies are expensive, and their are temporary times, like when one has sinus problems when the pressure might need to be changed.

If you are buying with insurance, then you would not purchase from cpap.com, and the price to you in a co-pay is likely to be the same which ever machine you get.

If you must purchase out of your own pocket, then the Philips machine can be bought from cpap.com for far less, as Philips give cpap.com a discount. Resmed does not give any DME a discount, that I have heard of.

Both are excellent machines. You might visit the brick and mortar DME you are talking with and ask to see both or should I say, hear both. They are both very quiet, a lot more quiet than someone snoring, or gasping for breath, however their is a slight whine that I am told is slightly different for each machine. Some people find one of the two sounds to be very objectionable. That is subject-able of course, and which ever you get, it is likely that you can get used to it. In any case, the first night you connect with real sleep, you will never complain about any sound from the machine. They are both less than whisper quiet.

Keep in mind that which ever machine you get, you will need to get its' humidifier as well, unless you live in a rain forest.

Their is free software available for the Philips Respironics machine, Sleepy head on the source forge. Whether it is as professional as the software which Philips sells is hard to say.

You might, at this juncture, try to get an extra written copy of your prescription to carry on a trip. Likewise to initiate the process to have your sleep doc to send a third copy for a machine and supplies to CPAP. com (if you live in the US.) We have had member who have taken a trip, and found they needed a hose or some small thing, which one must have a prescription to obtain.

Also a description of what your sleep study revealed. As that might help you in understanding what you are seeing on the data later.

Others here often remind me that it is more important for a newcomer to focus on which mask is right for them, as we are all different. The right mask makes xpap treatment doable for some and the wrong mask, discourages people into quitting.

I say that getting on xpap is for me like being reborn. I went from waking up in the morning thinking, "It can not be time to get up yet, to "Oh gosh, I have so many interesting things to do today."

Hello--for what it is worth--I love, love my S9 autoset-Resmed!! Never used any other brand but Resmed!! No problems with it --it does what is supposed to do and I get very detailed numbers every morning. Good Luck to you.
