Airway blocked

Post by ozze_dollar » Sat Sep 03, 2011 5:58 pm

For the first time last night my airways had some sort of restriction. My machine kept on ramping up to maximum pressure causing problems with my mask. At first I thought its because I am on my back so I tried changing from side to side with no luck. You can imagine with the machine in such an excited state it wasnt good for sleeping. I just didnt appreciate what was the problem. Then I had a cough and a swallow and the machine calmed down. It came back pretty quick though but it made me realise my airways are blocked more than usual. I had been to a small party eating, drinking and talking a lot so there must have been some swelling somewhere. It took hours to go away. bit of a shock. What to do in such a situation?

You need to find the cause. Allergies (especially food ones) can ramp up to death threat level in no time.
Try and make a list of everything you had. Then try each one separately leave a day or two between. Keep a note book and pay special attention to how your throat feels.

You may also want to see an allergist.

Of course it could be due to too much loud talking but usually that isn't so severe and ones throat feels definitely raw.

Was anyone smoking?

Sometimes SinusRinse saline rinse can help.

If it happens too often, you may need to get a full face mask to use on stuffy nights.

I am not sure how a FFM would help. you are thinking its my nose that is blocked rather than my throat, you could be right, who knows.

Yes, I was thinking your nose was blocked, and that's why I thought an FFM would help.

If it was your throat, maybe a few drinks, extra food, etc. might make your throat relax and collapse more than usual.

I wonder if "normal" tissue irritation from a sore throat could make apnea worse. It seems that would make sense. Do you folks find your numbers get worse when you have a cold or sore throat?

Wine, beer and liquor can cause that type of issue. Especially so for those that never/rarely consume the particular beverage. Don't discount a potential food allergy. Also don't discount that you just might have a low grade illness.

I never have had a case where my throat swelling due to allergic reaction was reduced by a cough and swallow. I no longer consume Cavendish bananas that aren't vine ripened so that problem is gone.
