Traveling to India - Distilled Water?

Post by karthikvprasad » Sat Jul 09, 2011 4:01 pm

Hello forum,

I am traveling to India for three weeks and was wondering about what water to use for my CPAP? I generally use Distilled water in the US for my machine (ResMed S9 Elite).
Can anyone guide me if we do get distilled water everywhere? I asked someone in India and they told me that the only distilled water they have heard of is the one uesd in batteries and I don't think it's easy to get that as opposed to the US where we can pick it up in any pharmacy/grocery.
Any suggestions on what other water I could use? How about just bottled drinking water like Aquafina, etc.? Will this damage the CPAP humidifier unit? Also, if

Thanks,
KP

Sorry, did not finish my question and I accidentally hit Submit.

My other question was, If anyone has been to India, it would be great if you could tell me more about the Distilled Water situation there and how easy or hard is it to find it. Thanks!

I used bottled water on my last trip but when I got home I REALLY gave the humidifier a good cleaning and soaked it in vinegar and water. It was sparkly clean after that.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

Just use bottled drinking water.....and drain the tank completely every three or four days.

You'll do fine with drinking water.

The water is added to the humidifier chamber to add moisture or humidification to the air you breath. The water is not for purification purposes. Distilled water is the standard optimum IF its available, because of less mineral content that MAY be harmful to the tank. Otherwise any bottled drinking or tap water is perfectly fine for several weeks useage. If you feel more comfortable about it, give it a wash every week while gone.

Bottled water for the humidifier tank, and lots of Imodium A-D for your internal tank
Thinking of quitting CPAP?

No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:

Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

I spent 4 weeks in India and used bottled water for my machine, its available anywhere. Water chambers are really cheap to replace if you get them gunked up with minerals.

I found the power grid to be less than reliable. I was really glad to have purchased a battery from CPAP.com, I used it at least twice a week.

Its mostly used only for industrial purposes, or in small quantities for some very specific medical purposes, outside of North America so you will generally not find it readily available, let alone everywhere.

Any "clean" water (i.e. water that you'd be prepeared to drink) will be fine in your humidifier. Just rinse it out with white vinegar when you return home.

Cheers,

Bill
